Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

The YP-R1 has arrived with the name R’mix added on. R'mix. Not such a stupid name seeing as the player is equipped with the Beat DJ feature. If you didn’t know, for over a year now, the Samsung player division has been moved from the high-tech leisure section to the mobile phones section. No doubt as to the paternity of the R’mix: while the software interface has come from the P3, the product design seems to descend from the Player range of Samsung phones. It isn’t ugly, but a bit of diversity wouldn’t do anyone any harm. The controls are all touch, except for on/off/hold and volume control. This is a little on the light side for what is mainly an MP3 player, but there it is. The software interface is very simple to use; afficionados will love it and new users will quickly be at ease. It does perhaps err on the side of gadgetry however. From the gingerbread man who gets all excited when you tap on him, to the butterfly that flits across the screen or the clock that bounces around. Interesting for a few seconds and then you switch off. With a 2.6 inch screen (though bright), the R’mix can’t really claim to be a real PMP.
