Samsung NX210 Review

The NX210 is the latest mirrorless compact system camera from Samsung, following last year's NX200 model. The metal-bodied NX210 features a 20.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, high speed capture and fast auto focusing, ISO range of 100-12800, 1080p HD movie recording, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, 3-inch AMOLED screen, 8fps continuous shooting, 3D Panoramas and Samsung's unique i-Function lens. The i-Function button on compatible lenses allows users to control the NX210 by scrolling through manual settings (shutter speed, aperture, EV, WB, and ISO) and using the focus ring to change the parameters for each setting. The NX210 also has a special i-Scene lens priority mode, which allows users to select the scene modes, six different Smart Filters and the intelli-Zoom function. The Samsung NX210 costs £749 / $899 in a kit with the new 18-55mm OIS III lens, which has a metal mount. The new NX210 has an angular and hard-edged design that is designed to appeal more to the serious photography enthusiast than upgraders from a simpler compact camera.

Samsung NX210 review

Mirrorless compacts with swappable lenses are the hot trend in cameras right now. They offer the best of both worlds -- the smaller body of a compact coupled with the versatility of a dSLR. Samsung knows that as well as anyone, which is why it's refreshing its line-up every few months. The NX210 comes hot on the heels of the NX200, which made its CNET UK bow six months back. Much of the spec is the same, but with the addition of built-in Wi-Fi, it's now smarter and more capable than ever. The Samsung NX210 can be bought online with an 18-55mm lens from around £640. A highlight of Samsung's compact interchangeables is the iFN button on the side of the barrel. This gives you direct access to toggling the most common shooting options for each mode. So, set the NX210 to shutter priority and iFN alternates between shutter speed and exposure compensation. Switch to aperture priority and it swaps out shutter speed for aperture. If the camera's set to manual, then it switches back and forth between shutter and aperture. The button itself is paired with the focus ring at the front of the dial, so a twist of the ring adjusts each setting or, if you find it easier, you can use the regular top-mounted wheel instead.

Samsung NX210 review

Though it uses the same sturdy, well-designed body as the NX200, and boasts a broad set of sharing and connectivity options, the Samsung NX210's performance and JPEG photo quality don't seem to match its predecessor's. The NX210 produces extremely good raw images up to ISO 3200, but JPEGs begin to show noticeable artifacts as low as ISO 400. The biggest problem is Samsung's edge handling; it's a little easier to overlook some mushiness and hot pixels than the aliased-looking (jagged) edges caused by sharpening. It's severe enough that at ISO 800 I was convinced I'd shot some images at the wrong quality level -- the camera defaults to Fine rather than Super Fine compression, I suspect to speed up the image processing. While I don't like the idea of defaulting to a lower quality setting, the difference between the two isn't that significant (likely because the Super Fine isn't that great). In all other respects the camera delivers very nice images. In an unusual move, it defaults to the neutral color settings rather than the more typical saturation-and-contrast-boosted Standard like other cameras do. I prefer that, and even the NX210's neutral images come out reasonably saturated rather than flat. The exposures look good and it meters consistently.

Samsung NX210 Review

The Samsung NX210 is, apart from the addition of a Wi-Fi mode, as good as identical to its predecessor Samsung NX200. In this article we have therefore concentrated on the new features of the camera but also included our usual studio test scene. However, to get the full set of test data and information that you expect from a dpreview review please also read our Samsung NX200 review from earlier this year in addition to this article. The Samsung NX210 was announced in April 2012, only 7 months after its predecessor, the NX200. This very short product cycle (even by digital camera standards) is explained by the fact that the NX210 is near-identical to its predecessor in terms of both design and technology. The only major difference between the two models is the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity on the NX210. It allows you to share images wirelessly, transfer them to a smartphone, or use a smartphone to remote-control the camera. This upgrade is part of Samsung's strategic move toward a entirely Wi-Fi-enabled NX mirrorless system line.

Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

For 2012 Samsung decided to renew its entire hybrid range. The fairly recent NX200 has therefore already been supplanted with the NX210, which we're reviewing here. The body and sensor are exactly the same; what's new is the addition of Wi-Fi functionality, which has been tagged on to every camera in the NX series. Did you like those "spot the difference" games when you were a kid? Well, try this one on for size: try and tell the NX210 and NX200 apart without looking at the reference number. From the front they're identical, right down to the rubber on the grip handle. From the back they're the same, all the way down to the logo. The only difference is the "Wi-Fi" setting on the mode dial. Please see our review of Samsung's WB850F for a more detailed review of the Wi-Fi functions. The build is nice. The camera feels comfortable in your hands and has a good-looking body, but we still feel there are a few things missing. We wish it had a built-in flash (although an external mini-flash comes in the box) and a tiltable screen like the one found on the recent Sony NEX-F3. Also, the dials turn a tad too easily, so when you're walking around with the camera dangling from your neck, for example, there's always the risk that the settings might get changed accidentally.

Samsung NX210 (Preview)

The Samsung NX210 combines the sleek, compact design of the NX1000, with a few of the extra high-performance features and design implementations of the high-end NX20. Because of this, Samsung describes it as the most versatile of its new NX cameras—all of which include 20-megapixel CMOS image sensors and built-in WiFi. The NX210 is bundled with an 18-55mm kit lens and a removable flash for a total cost of $899. The Samsung NX210 is a compact system camera that is nearly identical in size and weight to Samsung’s entry-level NX1000. The main difference between the two has to to with material. The NX210 has a more durable metal shell, while the NX1000 is encased in smooth, hard plastic. Surprisingly, the NX210’s metal body doesn’t add any more weight compared to the NX1000, but it does give the camcorder a slightly different appearance. Samsung calls the NX210 the “versatile and powerful” choice among the new NX cameras it launched this week. This basically means it’s positioned right between the “approachable” NX1000 and the “pro-grade” NX20. In the end, the NX210 isn’t much different than the NX1000—it’s got nearly identical proportions and most of the same features—so it isn’t really any different to use.

Hands on: Samsung NX210 review

Avid NX200 users may be pleased to learn that the NX210 has the same body and control layout as the NX200 it replaces. It also houses the same sensor, but Samsung has managed to push the maximum continuous shooting rate to 8fps instead of 7fps. More significantly, however, Samsung has included the Wi-Fi connectivity found in the recently unveiled compact cameras like the WB850F and WB150.This enables photographers to use their smartphone as a remote controller and viewfinder. It's much more than just a remote trigger though as the 'phone's screen can display the entire Smart Panel which enables full control over 16 shooting parameters, including aperture, shutter speed and sensitivity and so on.Interestingly, this also means that the camera is given a touch sensitive screen by proxy. We haven't been able to test this functionality yet, but we are looking forward to doing so as soon a full review sample becomes available. It could extremely useful to wildlife photographers who don't want to disturb their subjects.Like the NX200 it replaces the NX210 has a fixed AMOLED screen which provides a nice clear view of the scene being composed. Unlike the NX20 announced at the same time, the NX210 doesn't have Samsung's Clear AMOLED screen with the resin filled gap.
