Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

With its flip-out screen, the Samsung MV800 is definitely an innovative camera. Apart from a few exceptions (like Canon's G12, for example), movable screens are more commonly seen in SLRs, mirrorless cameras and bridges, making it a pretty unique selling point in today's compact camera market. The MV800 has almost identical tech specs to the ST95, including a 5x zoom lens with 26 mm wide-angle, a 16-Megapixel CCD sensor and 720p HD video with mono sound. There is, however, one key difference—this model has built-in optical stabilisation system. The MV800 is a nice-looking little compact. The brushed metal finish on the front face looks pretty sleek, and the rear face is a smooth, seamless panel housing the screen, its surround and two flat buttons set flush to the surface. Flipping the screen up (as below) reveals a plain, textured surface with a second shutter release button for taking self-portraits (see right). All in all, the camera is a bit too smooth to maintain good grip, but the design and build quality don't disappoint. The LCD screen is a little less impressive, as the definition of just 288,000 dots makes onscreen images look visibly pixelated. Viewing angles, on the other hand, are nice and wide.

Samsung MV800 Digital Camera Review

Trying to find the right camera is always a difficult task. Do you go with more megapixels? Features? Or how compact it is? Well, the Samsung MV800 could be the camera you’re looking for. Featuring a 16.1MP image sensor, 3-inch touch screen display, a whole range of image modes, as well as a very sleek and stylish design, the Samsung MV800 should perform to a very high standard. Let’s take a closer look… The Samsung MV800 retails for £249.99 from most online retailers, including Amazon, Tesco, Comet and John Lewis. After opening the box, we’re presented with the camera, USB data cable, battery, quick start guide, warranty information, and the camera wrist strap. We’ve managed to get the red version of the MV800 to review today and I must say, the design, as a whole, is very nice. Both the compact and very slim nature of the Samsung MV800 is very appealing. Moving around the camera we can see a range of different ports and buttons. The front of the Samsung MV800 features the lens, Schneider KREUZNACH 4.7 – 23.5mm lens, flash, and Samsung logo.

Samsung MV800 review

The key feature of the Samsung MV800 is of course its tilting screen, which makes it one of the only compact cameras to feature an adjustable screen, especially at this price point. While other screens articulate round to the side of a camera, the Samsung MV800's flips up to the top, making it the world's first compact camera to feature such a screen. The Samsung MV800 is designed to fit alongside the 2View range of cameras that Samsung introduced a couple of years ago and that feature dual screens, one being on the front of the camera to help with composing self and group portraits. Helpfully, the compact camera's 3-inch screen also features the ability to flip over if the camera is turned upside down, so you can use it from all manner of awkward angles. Further good news is that the screen is touch-sensitive, so it can be used to control the camera.Other specs on board the Samsung MV800 include a 16.1 million pixel sensor, a 5x optical zoom lens that features a 26mm wide angle, Live Panorama and art filters. HD video recording at 720p is also available.

Samsung MV800

The Samsung MV800 MultiView is an updated take on the company’s DualView line. Rather than two LCDs—one on the back, one on the front—the MV800 has a single hinged display that can flip up 180 degrees. Need a self portrait? Flip up the screen and see your beautiful mug smiling back at you. It also incorporates a smartphone-esque user interface, a lot like the one found on Samsung’s Galaxy phones and tablets. Some shooting modes even behave like apps. Otherwise, the MV800 is really a run-of-the-mill point-and-shoot in a fancy package. Image quality is average at best, performance is pretty sluggish, and the 5x zoom ratio is pretty standard. Despite the cool design and user interface, it’s tough to justify the MV800’s $279 price tag. The Samsung MV800 takes vibrant pictures, but they’re not particularly color-accurate. A good point-and-shoot should score a 3.0 or lower in our color error test, with saturation somewhere between 90% and 110%. The MV800 returned a plainly mediocre (or even borderline poor) 3.51 color error, and the 110.4% saturation result is a hair outside of our acceptable range. More on how we test color. Samsung MV800

The Samsung MV800 is the first compact camera we've seen that includes a flip-up screen so you can see yourself as you snap away -- and it's a touchscreen to boot. We gave the MV800 a quick poke and prod at its launch in Germany to see if this self-portrait machine has something to offer anyone except extreme narcissists. The MV800 is a 16.2-megapixel compact camera with a 5x optical zoom and 26mm wide-angle lens. You'll be able to use it to shoot yourself from mid-September, and it will cost around £250. The screen is hinged, and folds over the top of the camera, so you can see your face when you point the MV800 at yourself. That will be most useful for self-portraits or perhaps filming a video of yourself talking straight to camera. When the screen is folded out, a handy spare shutter button is revealed on the back of the camera so you can easily take a picture. The flip-out screen is a narcissist's dream. The MV800 is the successor to recent Samsung cameras like the PL120, which boasts a small screen on the front, for lining up self-portraits or playing animations to make kids laugh. The screens on the front of the PL120 and its ilk are pretty small, whereas the MV800's display is much bigger.
