Samsung LN55C650

Here at PC Labs we've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Samsung's 3D HDTV, instead we got the LN55C650 ($2099.99 list). And we're not at all disappointed. While it isn't a 3D-ready set, this 55-inch CCFL-backlit model is one of the best performing LCD HDTVs we've seen in quite some time, offering deep blacks, a high contrast ratio, and stunning high-def and standard-def picture quality. The LN55C650 sports an updated variation on Samsung's familiar Touch of Color design; the glossy black bezel is tinged with red accents, but the reddish effect is much more subtle than the TOC finish used on last-year's LED-based UN40B7000 ($2,199.99, ). The cabinet measures 3.4 inches thick and sits on a rectangular stand with a swiveling mounting arm that is a bit too thin to support the 62-pound 55-inch panel - so there's a little wobble. Another minor gripe - the labeling used to identify the five touch-sensitive controls located on the right side of the lower bezel is too small and too dark, rendering it virtually unreadable unless you happen to keep a flashlight handy. You're better off using the bundled 8.25-inch remote control for all of your adjustments, as it features 43 good-size backlit buttons plus a rocker switch, all of which are clearly marked and responsive.
