Samsung HZ35W

Long zoom compact cameras are emerging as one of the latest trends in digital photography and the 12-megapixel Samsung HZ35W (Samsung WB650 in some markets) fits neatly into that category. It's small enough to be pocketable yet is equipped with a wide-angle, 15x optical zoom that delivers an impressive focal range of 24-360mm (35mm equivalent). That's more than wide enough to capture great landscapes and group shots of family and friends and grab distant shots that would otherwise be out of reach. Dual image-stabilization, optical and digital, helps steady the Schneider-Kreuznach lens, while an aperture selection of f/3.2-f/11.6 at wide-angle and f/5.8-f/12 at telephoto allows for depth-of-field control. Shutter speeds range from 16 seconds to 1/2,000 second, so you can take long exposures in low light or stop action. ISO can be set from 80-3,200. In addition to the 15x optical zoom lens, other hot features include built-in GPS with a map display and a 3-inch, 614K-pixel AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen for framing and viewing images. Both of these features set the Samsung HZ35W apart from its near-twin, but less expensive sibling the HZ30W (WB600), which has no GPS and is equipped with a 3-inch, 230K pixel LCD.

Samsung HZ35W

The $349.99 (list) Samsung HZ35W is jam-packed with goodies: 14.1 megapixels, integrated GPS for geotagging your photos, a gorgeous 3-inch OLED screen, and a generous 15x optical zoom lens. And Samsung has managed to fit all of this into a 1.1-inch deep body that you can drop into your pocket. Though I've really enjoyed other Samsung cameras in the past, like the Editors' Choice Samsung DualView TL225 ($349.99, ), this model is more difficult to recommend: Photos captured in anything but ideal lighting conditions will likely be noisy. The HZ35W can fit in your pocket, but it will likely be the only thing in there. At 2.38 by 4.2 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and almost a half-pound, this camera isn't the slimmest or lightest you can find. But there's a reason for the extra bulk: you get 15x zoom lens, with focal length that's wider and longer than much of the competition - 24mm-360mm with corresponding aperture of f/3.2 (w) and f5.8 (t). The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS ($349.99, ) offers 14x zoom, but because it doesn't start as wide as the HZ35W, it goes further and offers more telephoto zoom, with a focal length of 28-392mm.

Samsung HZ35W

The Samsung HZ35W is a bit of a surprise. Its predecessor, the HZ15W, was sort of a mess and going into this review I didn't have high hopes. The HZ35W is, as it should be, a better camera than that model with Samsung making improvements to design and photo quality and adding a GPS receiver, a sharper, higher-resolution display, and a longer, wider lens. Shooting performance isn't improved, but it was already pretty good, so there's no real disappointment there. The menu system still needs some help and there are wrinkles in the GPS setup that need to be addressed. The semimanual and manual modes are sort of a pain to use. Plus, its high ISO/low-light photo quality could be better. Those who make a lot of setting changes or really want the ASM mode might want to reconsider, but the HZ35W is otherwise a solid compact megazoom, especially for those who want the longest, widest lens in a pocketable body and built-in geotagging. The HZ35W is one of the larger compact megazooms I've tested this year. To be fair, though, it has the widest and the longest lens in this class. It has a brilliant high-resolution 3-inch AMOLED screen, too, which performed very well in direct sunlight.

Samsung HZ35W

The 15X-optical-zoom Samsung HZ35W ($350 as of June 1, 2010) had the best overall performance score and feature set of any camera in our latest pocket megazooms test group, but our hands-on tests of the camera exposed a few things to think about before you rush out to buy it. Let's start with the laundry list of positives. The HZ35W's 15X lens (24mm to 360mm) offers the largest optical-zoom range of any compact camera currently available, and this model's dual stabilization feature proves amazingly effective in correcting everything but the most severe shaking. To play back images and frame shots, you use the camera's 3-inch-diagonal AMOLED screen, which is impressively sharp and easy on the eyes. The geotagging feature works well, going a step further than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V--you don't need to install software on your computer and offload images to see the GPS features in their full glory. Navteq's mapping service is installed on the HZ35W, letting you view your photos on a map on the AMOLED screen. It also displays the city name when you're viewing your geotagged images on the camera, rather than just a number-soup of coordinates.
