Samsung TL225

The Samsung DualView TL225 (also known as the ST550 in some markets) features a 12.2-megapixel sensor with a 4.6x zoom lens. The Samsung TL225's lens ranges from 27mm - 124mm equivalent, a generous wide-angle to a moderate telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.5 to f/5.9 across the zoom range. The Samsung TL225's lens includes optical image stabilization, which should help reduce the likelihood of blur caused by camera shake, as part of what Samsung terms Dual Image Stabilization. The other part of the function is Digital Image Stabilization, which combats blur using the camera's firmware, automatically raising the camera's ISO sensitivity as needed. The Samsung TL225 also has a 3.5-inch widescreen LCD display with 1,152,000 dots of resolution, which equates to around 384,000 pixels. This unusually high-res display features a touch panel through which most control is achieved. The Samsung TL225's Smart Gesture user interface recognizes specific fingertip gestures on the touch panel and responds accordingly. For example, tracing your finger in a cross mark on the screen will delete the current photo, while tracing a circle will instead rotate it.

Samsung TL225 Digital Camera Review

The Samsung TL225 is a compact point & shoot camera with a trick up its sleeve: a 1.5-inch LCD screen on the front for taking self portraits. The TL225 is a compact point and shoot camera that captures 12.2 megapixel images, and has a 4.6x zoom lens. It also has an unusual trick up its sleeve: as well as the 3.5-inch LCD on the back of the camera, there is a 1.5-inch LCD on the front for taking self-portraits or attracting the attention of small children and animals. It costs about $330. In this test, we look at how accurately a camera captures color, and we found that the TL225 did a very decent job. Most of the colors on the test chart that we use were accurately captured, although we did find some minor issues with reds and yellows, both of which were a little too vivid. Click here for more on how we test color The TL 225 offers a lot of color modes, but we found the best results by sticking with the Normal mode, which produced the most accurate color with the least oversaturation. Examples of the other color modes can be found in the controls section of this review.

Samsung DualView TL225

The difference between a gimmicky feature and honest innovation is whether the feature in question is useful at solving an actual problem. The Samsung DualView TL225--and its slightly less expensive linemate, the TL220--fall under "innovative" with its dual-LCD design, snappy touch-screen interface, and robust automatic shooting options all stuffed into an ultracompact body. The TL225 certainly isn't for everyone, though, especially those adverse to touch screens or having no need for being in a lot of their own photos. There are also a couple of other niggling design points that might turn people away, too. But, for the millions of people who like being in front of the camera and sharing their photos online, the TL225 is probably the pocket camera they've been waiting for. Unless you hate touch screens, there's very little not to like about the TL225's design. Up front is a 27mm-equivalent wide-angle lens with a 4.6x zoom. Next to it, hidden behind a black plastic front is a 1.5-inch LCD. Physical controls are limited to a power button, shutter release, a tiny zoom rocker, and a play button. Everything else is accessed and controlled through the gorgeous and bright, high-resolution 3.5-inch touch-panel display on back.

Samsung ST550

The ST550 is one of Samsung's latest launches and the Korean giant reckons the camera's ‘robust features ensure a perfect picture with every click. Or touch.' Samsung designed this camera to be a touch-based model and as a result there are only four physical controls; power, capture, zoom control and playback. Using the camera involves spending a lot of time swiping and clicking away on the massive 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD and we're happy to say that we had no issues at all. The LCD is very responsive to even minor touches so you don't have to focus on making a pronounced stab to get the camera to react. The LCD also gives haptic feedback and this helps to boost confidence further. The menu system itself is intuitively designed and thus is very easy-to-use. That said you will be forced to use two hands to use some of the camera's features. The 3.5-inch LCD isn't the only LCD on the ST550 however; there's also another 1.5-inch LCD sitting near the camera's lens. This enables you to take self portraits and we found it works quite well. That said a detachable swivel LCD is far more flexible than a stationary one.

Samsung ST550

The Samsung ST550 has two LCD screens - one on the front and one on the back. May sound a little absurd, but it's actually fairly criminal it's not happened before. How often do you see holiday goers trying to take self portraits (unsuccessfully) at an arm's length? The ST550 sets out to eliminate this problem, but it doesn't shun the rest of its performance - with a 3.5in touchscreen on the back the Samsung ST550 looks to be a real crowd pleaser. The What Digital Camera Samsung ST550 review gets snapping... As well as dual LCD screens, the ST550 dons a 12.2 Megapixel sensor for ample-sized images and has a 27-124mm (4.6x optical zoom) lens to cover a varied range that's also optically stabilised to avoid camera shake. The main 3.5in rear LCD screen is touch sensitive, meaning there's no need for any physical buttons on the rear. The front screen is more or less invisible until activated with a stern tapping, when it becomes bright and easy to view front-on. High ISO setting ranges from ISO 80-3200 for low-light performance when needed, or the in-built flash can provide an extra punch of light.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras 2009

Samsung's ST550 has some very standard specifications, but some interesting features too. It has a 12.2 Megapixel sensor, can film in 720p HD with a 27 mm wide angle lens and a combined optical and digital stabilization system. However, what's garnered the most attention is its 3.5'' touchscreen--and the smaller second screen on the front. We were convinced by our very first contact with the ST550: it's a serious camera with excellent construction. It's a successful design that won the approval of the majority of people here in the lab. The glossy black camera body with a hint of colour (purple, gold, orange and red accents are available) gives it a very attractive finish. The downside of a glossy finish is that it easily becomes covered with greasy fingerprints, which rather takes the shine off the ST550. The back of the camera is occupied by a 3.5'' LCD screen with 1 152 000 sub-pixels. It's very responsive and operating the camera using it is a treat. We were less convinced by the system of controlling the camera by shaking it, which takes a while to learn; we're not really sure it actually saves much time.
