Samsung has unveiled dual-screen digital cameras that make it easier for people to take pictures of themselves alone or with friends. The TL220 and TL225, introduced Thursday, come with a 1.5-inch LCD on the front and a touch screen on the back. The front display lets the photographer see what the camera sees in positioning the device for a self portrait or when mugging for the camera with pals. Another ease-of-use feature is activating the camera's self-portrait mode by a single tap on the back LCD. The cameras' smile detection technology makes it possible for photographers to take pictures of themselves by simply tapping and smiling, according to Samsung. Both cameras have 12.2-megapixel sensors, a 4.6x lens, and a 720p video recorder. The TL225 has a 3.5-inch wide touch screen in the back, while the TL220 has a smaller 3-inch display. Both cameras have a 27-mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach lens. Along with the dual-screen cameras, Samsung also introduced the CL65, which has a global positioning system that tags pictures with location and time information for organizing photos later. In addition, the camera supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technology. The latter makes it possible to upload pictures and video directly to social-networking sites, such as Facebook and YouTube. Samsung CL65 vs Vado HD - Outdoor Comparison (Sunset)

This is a high-contrast/outdoor test of the Samsung CL65 and the Vado HD, 720p @ 30fps "HD" video .. The Samsung's colors were set to 'vivid' above and I have adjusted the RGB below, to simulate the Vado's saturated feel (esp. the green tint) which makes the Vado record very nice outdoor videos. The Samsung has a rather wide range of color and tone adjustments for video. Using the 'normal' setting and auto white balance i noticed that the Samsung records more natural colors than the Vado -but- as a result, the Vado's video looks 'better' - that is probably because the Vado saturates colors more than an average camera, which is not necessarily a bad thing. A big plus for the Samsung is the 5x optical zoom which you CAN use during video recording. There is a slight 'zooming' sound and the focus needs to re-adjust if you pan after zooming - all these are expected. The Vado has a 2x digital zoom, as a result it is absolutely quiet, but the quality of the video degrades significantly - which is also expected. Another difference is that the Samsung can focus and then record video (it can do macro for example) that most pocket camcorders cannot, due to their fixed focus lens. A big plus for the Vado is it's wide angle lens - no other pocket "HD" camera i have seen has such wide and crisp lens! Another plus for the Samsung is it's optical image stabilization, which helps when holding the camera relatively steady, don't expect to record smooth video while walking (!), but overall ...

Richard's cows... enjoying a relaxing fall afternoon. In this sample you can hear the lens noise during zoom. Although it is impossible to ignore, I still prefer hearing the zoom noise and some ambient sound as opposed to having the sound muted during zoom like on the st 550. also, at about 1:04, i use the "pause" feature that makes the samsungs so great: you can pause during recording and then resume without having to start a new clip. sure, basic video editing software will do the same thing, but why bother if you don't need to? i hadn't yet activated the stabilization and it really shows :)

Samsung CL65 vs Vado HD - Outdoor Comparison

This is an outdoor test of the Samsung CL65 and the Vado HD, 720p @ 30fps "HD" video recording features.. Below the Samsung is focused in Macro mode (that is why the background is blurry), the Vado's focus is fixed. Vado tends to saturate colors more than the average camera which makes them more lively and vivid, but in some cases a bit too amped. Overall, that is better than some other pocket camcorder's washed out colors, but it would also be nice to be able to adjust them. The biggest difference in color between these two is the green tone that looks (imo) better in the Vado's footage, but the Samsung has an adjustable RGB feature - which i did not test here. Check my other video for a comparison in high-contrast light, and Samsung's color settings, along with more details about the two cameras.
