With Blu-Ray technology the standard for enhanced home theater enjoyment, Blu-Ray players have thankfully come down in price and rendered the standard DVD player technically a fossil. Every two to three months, I get a friend/relative asking what Blu-ray player they should be considering. I have yet to have someone ask what DVD player they should choose. Through the past three years, Blu-Ray players have been getting cheaper, easier to find and pack more and more features to draw consumers to pick a certain manufacturer's offering. Today's review of Samsung's BD-C6900 3D Blu-Ray player is not exactly the product you would target a penny-pinching home theater consumer to buy. It's native 3D playback is only for the buyer that has a TV to match and would be a waste if you are not interested in that type of functionality. But not only is it one of Samsung's top models at the time of this review, top rate playback and 3D capability is only scratching the surface. With integrated WIFI, Samsung Apps, DIVX movie playback, Blu-Ray Live, photo viewing, CD playback along with upconverting your regular DVDs to 1080p, the BD-C6900 is the model to consider if you want a little of every type of functionality in one purchase.
The BD-C6900 sports a much less generic design than its predecessors. It's finished in glossy black plastic, and the disc mechanism is visible through a transparent section lit up in blue. There's a small LCD screen at the front and a USB port hidden behind a flap. You can connect peripherals formatted as NTFS, which is something that not all of the previous models offered. During our tests, the majority of HD AVC (x 264 videos) encapsulated as MKV worked without a problem. On the other hand, the M2TS and MTS still aren't handled. Subtitles work fine if they're in a separate file to the video itself. If you put them in a container, though, you won't get them on screen. The connectivity available at the back includes a digital audio output, an Ethernet port, an HDMI 1.4 output, analogue audio and video outputs (component and composite) and a 7.1 analogue audio output. Inside, there's a built-in WiFi card for accessing online content and firmware updates, plus 1 GB of memory for BD Live services. To test its performance in 3D, Samsung sent us a Blu-ray 3D and its UE-46C8000 along with the BD-C6900.
Photo gallery:Samsung BD-C6900 It seems like as soon as Blu-ray became a definitively mainstream home theater format, manufacturers scrambled to find a new format to charge extra for--3D. Samsung's BD-C6900 ($360 street price) is the first 3D Blu-ray player we've reviewed so far, and the 3D price premium is steep. The step-down BD-C6500 is nearly identical except it lacks 3D and costs about $135 less. Not to mention the fact that you'll need to buy a new HDTV and pricey 3D glasses, as well as 3D content--which is exceedingly rare at the moment. We also didn't find the 3D Blu-ray experience to be all that satisfying with the Samsung UN55C8000 3D HDTV we used for this test, although we suspect our issues in that area had more to do with the TV than the BD-C6900's 3D performance. 3D-pricing gripes aside, we found the BD-C6900 to be an excellent Blu-ray player. Its outstanding feature set is highlighted by built-in Wi-Fi, the expandable Samsung Apps platform (which already includes services like Netflix, Vudu, and Pandora) and 7.1 analog audio outputs. Its Blu-ray image quality is in the top ranks of Blu-ray players we've tested and its speedy operational performance is bested only by the Sony BDP-S570.
