Ricoh PX review

Rugged waterproof compact cameras tend to be fashioned to look as hardwearing as they claim to be, with chiselled edges, intricate details and exposed screw tops all giving the impression of solidity. Ricoh's PX proves this doesn't always have to be so; it eschews it all and instead opts for a clean and minimal design. While the company's previous waterproof digital cameras were aimed at industrial rather than consumer use, the Ricoh PX combines its more conventional styling with a set of specifications comparable to those from other rugged models. The camera incorporates a 16MP CCD sensor, one fitted with a stabilisation system to help keep images blur-free, along with a Smooth Imaging IV engine for all image-processing tasks. Optically the Ricoh PX spans a reasonable 5x optical zoom range of 28-140mm, but Ricoh confidently claims that this can be doubled "with almost no drop in image quality" – a claim that'll be investigated later on.Regarding its rugged credentials, the PX is waterproof to a depth of 3m and dustproof to the Class 6 JIS/IEC specification.

Ricoh hasn't tackled the waterproof camera market as other manufacturers have, with just a handful of models over models over the years, some of which are aimed more towards industrial than consumer use. The company's latest PX model, however, is something quite different. With an understated design and a price tag under 200, it looks likely to join the growing number of affordable waterproof models targeted towards the younger, fashion-conscious crowd. Ricoh claims the model's waterproofing allows it to be used to a depth of 3m for up to 60 minutes, which may seem a little behind what others are offering but is likely to be sufficient protection for the average underwater user. As with many similar models, though, the PX is protected against more than just water: its sealing makes it resistant against dust and dirt, while shock proofing allows it to be dropped from a maximum height of 1.5m. Ricoh has also primed the camera's 2.7in LCD screen with a coating to prevent any scratches from forming as it is being used and abused. On the inside the PX offers a 16MP CCD sensor, which shifts to compensate for image blur. In front of it sits a 5x optical zoom lens, which provides the user with a capable focal range of 28-140mm.

Ricoh's history of making waterproof cameras dates back to before it was a mainstream product segment. When only a couple of models were available, Ricoh regularly offered industrial-grade waterproofing and shock-proofing, with its products being certified to various military and national standards. Now, of course, few manufacturers would feel its lineup were complete if it didn't include a moderately drop-proof, lightly submersible camera, so it's interesting to see Ricoh's response to this. The PX's specifications put it squarely in this everyday, do-everything compact category - with its waterproofing down to 3m (10ft) and impact resistance for drops up to 1.5m. Its 5x zoom lens, offering 28-140mm equivalent focal lengths, is also pretty standard for the class, as is its 2.7" 230,000 dot display. What's not so familiar, in this class, is its understated appearance. While this particular example might be lime green, it doesn't shout about its resilient credentials. Instead it's an innocuous-looking, aluminium clad compact camera. The only real giveaway is that its lens doesn't extend when it's switched on. Instead it has a periscope-style lens with an image-stabilized sensor sitting at one end of it.
