Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

An expert compact is first and foremost a camera that gives users fast access to loads of settings, while also allowing the interface to be customised to suit specific needs and habits. Ricoh's model ticks all those boxes, and boasts a 28 mm fixed-focal-length lens and a body that's a fair bit more compact than many competitor models. So while the slowly but surely evolving GR Digital is now in its fourth incarnation, Ricoh's expert compact par excellence is still one-of-a-kind in the camera market. Any spot the difference buffs should take a look at the Ricoh GR Digital III next to the GR Digital IV and try to work out what's new. We did just that, and spotted two differences—the four-way arrow keys are now bigger and have icons on them so show you what they do, and a new rangefinder window has appeared on the front of the camera! So anyone who found the previous GR cameras rather plain and austere aren't likely to change their mind with this new model. The GR Digital IV is as plain, basic and post-Soviet in design as its predecessors. But while aesthetics are certainly debatable (note that the white version isn't any better), this camera still sets the standard for ease of handling in compact cameras—some SLRs could even learn a thing or two from Ricoh's GRs!

Ricoh GR Digital IV review

The Ricoh GR Digital IV is a high-end, premium priced compact camera that, superficially at least, appears to be little more than a re-badged version of 2009's GR Digital III.To be fair, when Ricoh began designing the follow-up to the finely-tuned photographer's compact that was GRD III, it was always going to be a question of 'where to now?'Like its predecessor, the Ricoh GR Digital IV features a 10-megapixel 1/1.7-inch CCD and a fixed focal length 28mm (effective) f/1.9 lens. It retains the same body design, too, complete with accessory hotshoe, pop-up flash and well considered control layout.HD video shooting continues to be noticeable by its absence - the camera can just shoot VGA footage at 30fps - but we imagine that its target owner is likely to be largely unfazed by this. This is a camera for people who need a photography tool rather than a toy.There's certainly a distinct lack of 'extras', with new features introduced by the Ricoh GR Digital IV being focused firmly in the areas of shooting performance and image quality. Take the new Hybrid AF system, for instance. This sees an external 190 AF-point sensor working in parallel with the conventional CCD contrast detection system.

The result of this outlook to the compact camera market is normally a combination of a high specification with utilitarian design, or in other words the Ricoh GR Digital IV. The result of this outlook to the compact camera market is normally a combination of a high specification with utilitarian design, or in other words the Ricoh GR Digital IV.At the core of the GR IV sits the key to the model's imaging prowess. A 1/1.7in CCD sensor is present, offering an effective resolution of 10 megapixels. Optics are also a key concern with an advanced compact such as the GR IV, so the prime f/1.9 lens, fixed at an equivalent focal length of 28mm, will no doubt be welcome.

Ricoh GR Digital IV

We spent a few minutes with Ricoh's latest pocket camera, the GR Digital IV. Marketed as a quick, candid street-shooter, this advanced compact offers enthusiast-friendly features like a bright f/1.9 fixed-focal-length lens, a 1/1.7" CCD sensor, RAW image capture, and some customizable manual controls. Read on for our first impressions of the Ricoh GR Digital IV. At first glance, the GR Digital IV looks like more of a toy than its price tag and spec sheet suggests. The unassuming front panel looks like it belongs to a 2004-era Canon Powershot, thanks to a shiny finish and a big, textured grip. Peek around the sides, though, at it starts to look more like the serious compact that it really is. The hot shoe, front-mounted jog dial, locking mode dial, and customizable function keys give it away as an enthusiast-oriented competitor to pocket powerhouses like the Canon S100 and Olympus XZ-1. It also has an unconventional quick-menu controller, the Adj. knob.

Ricoh GR Digital IV Preview

Preview based on a pre-production Ricoh GDR IV running firmware 1.02 With the announcement of the GR Digital IV, Ricoh updates its premium compact camera model. A successor to the GR Digital III, the GRD IV retains key elements from its predecessor. A fixed 28mm F1.9 lens sits in front of a 10MP 1/1.7" type CCD sensor, capable only of VGA video output. There's also a built-in pop-up flash and hotshoe. However, dig a little deeper and the changes are considerably more extensive. Ricoh has taken the opportunity to introduce numerous enhancements to the GRD IV. As you might expect, there's an updated image processor that Ricoh is using to wring more out of the sensor. Beyond this the most notable addition is an image stabilization system that uses sensor-shift to counteract camera shake. Ricoh also adds its 'Hybrid AF' system with which they claim a 2x improvement in AF speed over the GRD III. And, in what has become something of a Ricoh tradition, the GRD IV features a cutting-edge display: Sony's WhiteMagic RGBW LCD screen that promises greater luminance than traditional LCD displays while consuming less power.
