Plantronics Backbeat Go review

It's hard to design really small wireless Bluetooth earphones because you have to cram a battery and some extra electronics into a compact housing the size of something that's not much bigger than, well, an earbud. That's a challenge Plantronics has endeavored to overcome with its $99.99 BackBeat Go wireless stereo headset, one of the smallest and lightest stereo Bluetooth headsets out there, which features two slightly oversize earbuds joined by a flat, fettuccine wire that's designed to cut down on tangles. First, the good. The BackBeat Go is attractively designed and offers a pretty comfortable fit. I was able to get a tight seal with the largest of the included silicon eartips and while I used the optional "wings" that are supposed to help keep the earphones securely in place, I didn't feel they had much of an impact on the fit. As for sound quality, it was decent for a Bluetooth stereo headset and the performance of the headset was good (callers said they could hear me well). Overall, the sound was pretty balanced and didn't have a harsh edge or overemphasized the bass (there's not a ton of bass, but it's ample so long as you get a tight seal).

Shopping for a stereo Bluetooth headset can be hit or miss. When looking for the best solution, do you choose a product made by a company known for their commitment and mastery of audio technology or one that is known for their Bluetooth technology?And herein lies the dilemma with the Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth headset: it's a good stereo headset that's great for phone calls. That said, hardcore audiophiles will no doubt be disappointed by the bluetooth headset's overall music performance.We first saw the Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth headset at CTIA 2012 and couldn't wait to get some serious hands on time with the device. Sporting a rubberized, "tangle-free" design, the BackBeat Go rocks 6mm drivers that are more than adequate.We tested the Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth headset with two smart phones: the HTC Radar 4G Windows phone and the iPhone 4S. While the Bluetooth headset was great for phone calls on both devices, music playback left something to be desired. Bass response was extremely disappointing on both handsets and while this particular Bluetooth headset was plenty loud with our HTC Radar 4G Windows phone, we found ourselves wishing we could make it louder on our iPhone 4S.

Plantronics BackBeat GO Wireless Earbuds Review

What we've got here today is a pair of earbuds that do not plug into your smartphone - they connect entirely with Bluetooth. This unit is the BackBeat GO from Plantronics, a pair of earbuds which act wirelessly in every way, containing their own rechargeable battery unit inside their nearly weightless body and connecting, again, with Bluetooth to any Bluetooth-enabled device you have on hand. Not one for frills, Plantronics has created a pair of earbuds that sound fabulous and have such a low profile that your only worry will be misplacing them because they're so tiny! In our modern world of awesomely tiny technology, we can expect a bit more from our earbuds than we did all those years ago when the technology to put a speaker that small into one's ear was invented. What we've got here is certainly not the highest-class earbud in the industry (custom-made ear-molded buds still hold that distinction) but they're certainly up near the top for the wireless pre-made sets. These buds have DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and what's known as full duplex echo cancellation so you'll have great noise cancellation on the whole - rare for headphones that don't cover the ear.

Plantronics BackBeat Go

The featherweight BackBeat Go ($99.99) is a stereo Bluetooth headset equally adept at voice calls, listening to music or podcasts, and watching movies without disturbing anyone nearby. In fact, it's the best stereo Bluetooth headset we've ever used for phone calls, period. A few sound quality-related pitfalls with music hold it back from a perfect rating. But the BackBeat Go is still easily good enough to secure our Editors' Choice award for wireless headphones, and is well worth a close look—particularly if the Samsung Modus HM6450's ($99.99, 4 stars) convertible mono and stereo design doesn't appeal to you. Design, Inline Controls, and CableThe BackBeat Go weighs just 0.46 ounces. The plastic earbud housings have a curved shape, with a rubber cover over the micro USB charging port on the right earbud. The rubber tips are of a very soft material (more on that later). Plantronics includes three sets in the package, each of a different size, plus a set of optional looped stabilizers to further anchor each one in place when fitted to your ear. The inline control is close to the right earbud, and impossible to see with the earbud in place. It's simple enough to learn quickly, though.
