Pentax Q

It wasn't long ago I had the pleasure of running around town with one of the largest interchangeable lens cameras on the market, the Pentax 645D. It was big, but handled well, with excellent optics and a very high-resolution sensor. Today the contrast was dramatic, carrying the very tiny Pentax Q, a small interchangeable lens camera. The experience was very different, but it was still a Pentax, a company that's pushing beyond lots of boundaries lately. The Pentax Q has smaller optics and a smaller, lower-resolution sensor. Indeed, it's so small it fits in a pocket and conceals easily in a palm--or behind an iPhone. It could even hang--as our illustration demonstrates--from a keychain, were it not worthy of better daily care than that. Although its smaller 1/2.3"-sized sensor can't compete with comparably priced SLRs and CSCs, we're impressed with the execution on the Pentax Q. It's easier to make a case for comparing it to quality enthusiast cameras like the Canon G12, where its image quality fares better by comparison, albeit at a $300 price premium for the luxury of interchangeable lenses.

Pentax Q review

You can't really appreciate the size of the Pentax Q until you have it in your hand. Pentax claims it's small enough to fit into your palm, but in truth you could put two there, side by side, and just about still see four fingers and thumb. Despite this it has a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor and a brand-new interchangeable lens system. With a 3-inch screen around the back and integrated HDR capture and bokeh control, it represents a lot of technology squeezed into a very small package.The Pentax Q is available now in black and white from £499, although at the time of writing many retailers were offering a £100 cashback deal. Our test sample arrived with the 01 standard prime lens -- one of five in the Q range, which encompases a 17.5mm fish eye, 35mm and 100mm toy lenses and a 27.5-83mm zoom. All of those figures have been converted to match their 35mm equivalents. Our Pentax Q review unit came with this standard prime lens. Our standard prime has a physical focal length of 8.5mm with a maximum aperture of f/1.9, equivalent to 47mm in a 35mm camera. Minimum aperture is a fairly conservative f/8, and controlled by a horizontal thumb wheel at the back of the case.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

While electronics firms like Panasonic, Sony and Samsung led the way with interchangeable lens compacts, historic camera firms are now joining the party. The Pentax Q is a surprising model, as it's a fair bit smaller than the micro four-thirds cameras already on the market, as well as the likes of Sony's NEX cameras. In fact, the Q is a mini mirrorless camera with a mini sensor to match. Technologically, then, Pentax has taken quite a bold approach to cutting down the product's overall size, making the Q comparable with regular compact cameras, even if it comes with a price tag worthy of a model with a large-format sensor. For anyone who's used to handling interchangeable lens compacts, the Pentax Q feels unusually small in comparison. In fact it's the first mirrorless lens-switcher that we've really thought feels like a compact camera, even if, objectively, it's not really that much smaller than the Nikon J1 or the Panasonic GF3. The downsized lenses probably give a greater impression of compactness, however, and the central lens mount brings the weight closer to your hand and gives the camera a surprisingly lightweight feel. The Q has a retro-style design with plastics and textured leatherette that are reminiscent of 1970s cameras.

Pentax Q

Pentax has never been a company to do things in a typical way. It marketed some very fine SLR lenses in oddball 31mm, 43mm, and 77mm focal lengths, and released its K-x D-SLR ($599.95, 4 stars) in a rainbow of colors. Its first mirrorless compact camera, the 12-megapixel Pentax Q ($799.95 direct with 8.5mm lens) is not an exception. The company refers to the Q as a "hybrid camera," which is perhaps the best way to describe an interchangeable lens camera with a point-and-shoot sized image sensor, the same size found in the tiny Canon PowerShot S95 ($399.99, 4 stars). In that regard it's the opposite of our Editors' Choice for compact interchangeable lens cameras, the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars), which packs an image sensor equal in size to those found in D-SLR cameras. There are pros and cons to Pentax's approach—the smaller sensor makes it possible to design compact optics, but it also limits your ability to create a shallow depth of field by blurring the background of an image.

Pentax Q

The Pentax Q is one of several new mirrorless systems launching this year and it differentiates itself from the pack in a big way: by being as small as can be. While the Q is not as thin as your typical point-and-shoot camera, its height, width and image sensor are all similar to your standard compact camera. That puts it at a bit of a disadvantage against other interchangeable lens cameras, but compared to other small cameras it offers the promise of custom, higher quality lenses that are suited to a specific need. The result is a compact system camera that, while not as strong a performer as other cameras in its price range, will appeal to those looking for interchangeable lenses in as compact a body as possible. The Pentax Q’s natural color mode was its most consistently accurate, with a color error of just 3.30, and a saturation level of 85.71% of the ideal. The portrait mode offered more accurate saturation levels (and occasionally lower color error), but was less consistent overall. Natural handled yellow, greens, and magenta very well, while portrait handled skin tones, blues, and browns exceptionally well. More on how we test color.

Pentax Q Hands-on Preview

Preview based on a pre-production Pentax Q running firmware 1.0 The Pentax Q is the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market. And, just like the company's famously diminutive Auto 110 SLR from the late 70's, it achieves this by embracing a smaller format than its peers. Being built around a 1/2.3" sensor, the Q is a fraction of the size of even the smallest exisiting mirrorless cameras and is the first really pocketable model (though the protruding lens still means that'll have to be the pocket of your jacket, rather than your shirt or trousers). To make clear what the rather opaque 1/2.3" figure actually means, it equates to a surface area of around 28mm2. This is around 1/8th the size of the sensor used in Micro Four Thirds cameras and 1/13th the size of the the APS-C format sensor in Sony's NEX. The advantage of this is that the lenses for the Q mount can be made a lot smaller than those for other systems, but the downside is that the image quality is more likely to resemble that of a compact camera than a DSLR. You can glean a lot about Pentax's approach to the Q from the lenses it has announced: a 49mm equivalent F1.9 prime lens for the enthusiasts but accompanied with a healthy dose of fun in the form of two fixed focal length 'toy' lenses (a wide-angle and a telephoto version, both sub-$100).
