Pentax Optio WG-2 Review

The Pentax Optio WG2 and WG2-GPS are waterproof, dustproof and shock-resistant compact cameras which can be used at a depth of up to 12 metres, withstand a drop of 1.5 metres, cold to -10°C and a weight up to 100kg. The WG2 and WG2-GPS feature a 16 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, Full HD movie recording, a 5x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage, a 3 inch high-resolution LCD monitor with 460K dots, and six built-in LED macro lights. The Optio WG2-GPS additionally comes equipped with an upgraded GPS module and is the model that we tested for this review. The Pentax WG2 and WG2-GPS officially cost £229.99 / $299.95 and £279.99 / $349.95 respectively. The design of most toughened cameras, the premise being that stills and video can be shot underwater, in the cold, or even after you've dropped or stood on them, is distinctly drab; they are functional tools rather than fashionable accoutrements. Not so the Pentax Optio WG-2 – our review sample being the version that adds GPS for 50 more.

With the Optio WG-2, Pentax introduced its thirteenth generation of rugged digital cameras, one with GPS and one without. Its sculpted appearance of body armor gives the Pentax WG-2 a look that's more rugged than ever. Specs improve over the last generation, now including a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor and support for Full HD movie recording. The Pentax WG-2 GPS also includes a GPS radio, naturally, this one optimized for faster GPS acquisition and longer battery life. Now waterproof to a depth of 40 feet, the Pentax WG-2 can go a little deeper than its predecessor's max 33-foot tolerance. The Pentax WG-2 can also withstand a 5-foot drop, crushing weight of up to 220 pound-force, and it'll keep on working down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10C). Dustproofing also saves the WG-2 from another common form of camera damage: dirt, dust and sand. Its 5x lens gives the Pentax WG-2 a good 28-140mm equivalent focal range, great for most outdoor photography, and its 3-inch LCD offers good detail with 460,000 dots of resolution. An anti-reflective coating makes shooting outdoors a little easier, which is important given the lack of an optical viewfinder.

Pentax Optio WG-2 review

Pentax calls this 'your most adventurous friend', and it's easy to see why. The Optio WG-2 is waterproof, dust-proof and able to withstand a fall from 1.5 metres. It's claimed that freezing it to -10 degrees should not put the WG-2 in reach of the icy grip of death, and it can even shrug off a 100kg load without being crushed.It's available to buy now for around £230. To achieve all this sturdiness, Pentax has wrapped it in a somewhat unconventional body -- one that invokes the Marmite cliché. You'll either love or hate the glossy finish and angular cut of its superhero outfit, which does a good job of hiding the locked, strengthened battery flap. Despite what you might assume from its spiky appearance, it's both lightweight and comfortable to hold. Don't let the Iron Man look fool you -- the Optio WG-2 is suprisingly light. My only gripe where build quality is concerned is the dull shutter button. The buttons on the back aren't so bad -- they have a satisfying click -- but the necessities of battle-hardening this device have left the top-mounted shutter release more fiddly to press than it ought to be. I had no trouble finding the halfway point to fix the focus, but pressing it further than that required slightly more force than should be needed.

Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS

Pentax is known for their DSLRs, but they've been in the tough-cam category longer than any other manufacturer we can think of. The Optio WG-2 is their latest “adventure-proof” camera. It can survive in 40 feet of water, falls from 5 feet, pressure up to 220 pounds, temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and the ever-present menace of dust and sand. Competition in the tough-cam space is as fierce as we've ever seen it. As the industry shifts away from featureless, low-end pocket cameras, they're looking toward rugged cameras as a space for growth—you can't swim with your iPhone, after all. The WG-2 is one of seven current top-tier tough cams, and it stacks up pretty favorably. Read on to see why. The WG-2 is available now at a current MSRP of $299 (originally $349) in vermillion red and matte black. The GPS-enabled WG-2 GPS (the model on review here) is available now for an MSRP of $349 (originally $399) in shiny orange and glossy white. Aside from the GPS antenna, the two models are identical.

The Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS ($399.95 direct) is the successor to the company's WG-1 ($349.95, 2.5 stars) camera. The 16-megapixel shooter is rated for use in 40 feet of water, and has a very useful ring of LED lights around the lens for macro shooting. It's a fun camera, with a very bold, eye-catching design and a built-in GPS that adds location data to your photos. It didn't quite manage to top the Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS ($399.99, 4.5 stars) as our Editor's Choice, but it's a solid option if you're in the market for a camera that you can drop, submerge, freeze, and crush without worry. Design and Features Available in bright orange and glossy white finishes, the WG-2 is a camera designed to turn heads. Most rugged camera look alike—the lens is in the top corner of the camera, rubberized controls are on the rear of the camera. The WG-2 centers the lens and surrounds it with six LED lights for use in macro shooting. The WG-2 measures 2.4 by 4.8 by 1.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 7 ounces. This makes it a bit larger than the Nikon AW100 ($379.95, 4 stars), a more traditionally designed rugged camera that is 2.6 by 4.4 by 0.9 inches and 6.3 ounces. The camera's lens offers a 5x optical zoom, covering a 28-140mm field of view.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

A year after releasing the WG-1, Pentax has outed an updated version of its rough, tough, ready-for-anything waterproof compact. Like last year's model, the WG-2 is available with or without a GPS. The WG-2 is a little bit tougher than its predecessor and has a new 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, boosting sensitivity and making way for Full HD video. However, there's still no sign of optical or mechanical stabilisation, which would sure be handy in a sporty snapper. The Optio WG-2 has the same elongated design as the WG-1, but with a slightly more angular, slightly more masculine kind of look. In fact, we think the WG-2 looks like a real boys' toy if ever we saw one! The new model is now waterproof to 12 metres and, like its predecessor, is crushproof to 100 kg. The various compartments (battery, memory card) have an effective secure locking system that's simpler than in certain competitor models. Some of the controls have been moved around slightly. The zoom button, for example, has been reworked to sit neatly under your thumb and improve grip when holding the camera in one hand. Otherwise, the interface is the same as in previous models, so regular Pentax users will be able to find their way around easily.
