Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS

Rugged cameras have certainly come a long way since I first used a waterproof point-and-shoot--the classic early '80s 110 film-based Minolta Weathermatic A. Good for snorkeling, the camera took some pretty poor photos in and out of the water but it did have a cool yellow body! Enter Pentax's 12th generation ruggedized digicam that's not only waterproof to 33 feet (10m), it's cold, shock, and dust-resistant. You can even step on it (crushproof). It also has something that was just a fantasy back in the Weathermatic's day--a GPS that stores your location using orbiting satellites. Paging visionary Arthur C. Clarke, please. Targeted to adventurous types, we'll soon see if the WG-1 GPS is worth the journey for this crowd, and the more sedentary among us. Look and Feel. The WG-1 GPS may not have the bright yellow Ferrari look of the Weathermatic, but the butterfly-shaped digicam is available in three color schemes: black with gray accents, green/black, and orange/black with gray accents. The non-GPS WG-1 comes in black/blue and purple/orange motifs. They're definitely beyond the traditional silver-finished Altoids-shaped digicam. Our review sample was black with gray accents and to call this camera sedate is a stretch.

Pentax Optio WG-1 review

When the going gets tough, the tough get using their Optio WG-1. At least, that's what Pentax would like them to do. The WG-1 is yet another rugged camera but this one isn't just waterproof -- it's almost everything-proof. At around £210, it could be the ideal snapper to take with you on your adventures. With its heavy-duty plastic mouldings and rugged design, the WG-1 looks more like a piece of orienteering equipment than a digital camera. That's even more true once you attach the rock-climbing-style carabiner strap that comes supplied with the device. Pictures are, in general, warm, colourful and slightly soft. If you like images to be sharper, then you may need to run them through a filter in an image-editing application (click image to enlarge). The WG-1 is designed for extreme conditions, so it's waterproof to 10m, freezeproof to -10°C, and shockproof from heights of up to 1.5m. It's also crushproof to 100kg. As such, the WG-1 compares well with rival rugged cameras in terms of what it can withstand. If you're looking to go deeper still, however, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3 has the edge, with waterproofing to murky depths of 12m. For the DMC-FT3's extra 2m, plus added GPS support, you'll shell out around £60, however.

Pentax Optio WG-1

Whether you're at the beach, on the slopes, on a hike, or just have some slippery-fingered kids you don't want handling an expensive and fragile gadget, a ruggedized digital camera can be a handy thing to have. The 14-megapixel Pentax Optio WG-1 ($349.95 direct) is one such camera, and with one exception (more on that in a minute), it was able to handle all the torture we dished out during testing. But with unspectacular still images and video coupled with some speed issues, it doesn't deliver the caliber of performance we expect from a camera in this price range. Overall, it falls short of many rugged competitors including our Editors' Choice, the feature-heavy Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 ($399.95, 4 stars). Waterproof to 33 feet, drop-proof to 5 feet, crushproof to about 220 pounds, coldproof to 14 degrees, and generally sand- and dust-proof, the WG-1 is built to survive most anything. Fortunately, despite all the extra hardware required for water- and element-proofing, the WG-1 doesn't feel quite as large as some other rugged cameras. At 2.3 by 4.5 by 1.1 inches (HWD), and 5.9 ounces, it's certainly larger than your average compact camera (thicker, in particular), but it's still pocket-size.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Pentax has updated its waterproof camera just in time for summer 2011. The W90 has therefore stepped aside to make way for the WG-1—a more stylish camera with a neat, pinched waistline, but which isn't really all that different from its predecessor. It has the same 28-140 mm zoom lens, the same screen and still uses a CCD sensor, even if the resolution has been upped to 14 Megapixels. The WG-1 is an unusual-looking camera, with its elongated body (making room for the 16:9-format screen) and more than a passing resemblance to a chunky Casio G-Shock watch. The plastic and rubber casing is actually quite nice though, and even if its shape and design can sometimes feel a little fussy and unnecessarily complicated (on the upper edge for example) that doesn't affect the handling. In fact, your index finger will rest nicely in the dip on the upper edge of the camera. Although the camera's overall design may look to have changed a lot, the controls and their layout are exactly the same as in the W90. That's a bit of a shame, as we would have liked to see a video record button replace the much less useful smile-detection button.

Pentax Optio WG-1

The Pentax Optio WG-1 is a waterproof tough-cam that doesn't shy away from its adventuresome spirit. To some, the camera may look more like a piece of hardware or a gadget for your toolbox than a slick digital camera, but Pentax was able to incorporate decent imaging performance into the WG-1's tough little body. The camera is available in black or purple and has an MSRP of $349 (but you can find it for cheaper online). For an extra $50 bucks you can add GPS capability to the WG-1, and the GPS model comes with a black or yellow green paint job. The WG-1’s results in our color accuracy test were shockingly good. At best, the camera managed a color error of 2.42 and a saturation level of 92.16%—both of which are top-notch results. The WG-1’s good score here surprised us because it is so much better than the results we obtained from its predecessor, the Pentax W80. More on how we test color. Of the cameras we compared it to, the Panasonic Lumix TS2 was the next closest in matching the WG-1’s excellent color accuracy scores. The Pentax W80 and Casio EX-G1 were both far behind in this category, although it is difficult to tell from the color crops below.

Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS

The Optio WG-1 GPS is Pentax's 12th generation tough-cam. This means the WG-1 isn't just waterproof, but it's also shockproof, crushproof, coldproof, and dustproof. Need more? It also comes with a hardcore carabiner strap, uses five macro LEDs for extra lighting, and it has built-in GPS. The WG-1 GPS is coming to stores this April with a suggested retail price of $399. You can also save $50 and get the non-GPS version for $349. Saying the Pentax WG-1 has an unusual design would be an understatement. The camera looks funky, period. Its look is simultaneously high-tech and gaudy, with a hint of rugged excess. It is futuristic and gritty at the same time, although we're sure its look will appear to a certain sect of the population. It definitely won't be attractive to people who like their products to look sleek and stylish, or have a simple elegance. The WG-1 is none of those things. It is raw, durable, and looks like a rock climbing tool more than an ordinary camera. If you like that kind of design, that's greatâ??finally there's a camera that fits your taste. If you don't like it, that's fine too.
