Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

As its name suggests, the Pentax RZ18 has an 18x zoom lens. It's designed to replace the RZ10 with its 10x zoom in the affordable superzoom compact market. The RZ18 has a wide-angle lens (25-450 mm f/3.5-5.9), a 720p HD video mode and a classic 16-Megapixel CCD sensor. The Pentax RZ18 isn't the most stylish compact camera we've seen this year. In fact, the rather unflattering build and finish serve as a reminder that Pentax is out to keep the cost of this camera down to a minimum. The camera has a thin matte black plastic casing, and even though its textured surface feels quite nice to handle, the buttons aren't particularly pleasant to use. It would have been nice to see some kind of handle to improve grip too, or at least a rubber strip instead of the flat indent that's supposed to serve as a thumb-rest. On the upside, the controls don't wobble or feel loose and they aren't stiff or hard to press, even if the four-way pad flexes when you press on it. All in all, the camera has been built and assembled with care. We liked the textured finish of the black RZ18 we were sent to test and, in the absence of a handle (see above), it helped us keep firm hold of the camera. The interface is nice and simple and although the menus aren't very stylish, they're clear and easy to read.

Pentax Optio RZ18 review

Ultra-compact, ultra-zoom is how Pentax describes the RZ18. While we're not so sure about the ultra-compact bit -- it's larger than the Canon IXUS 230 HS and Casio Exilim ZS10, roughly matching the size of a box of cigarettes -- we're right on board with the latter. Packing one of the longest zooms currently available on a pocketable camera, at 18x zoom, the RZ18 tops much of the competition. It is keenly priced at £160. Build quality is good but not great. The RZ18's body is entirely swathed in cheap-feeling black, white or orange plastic and there's clearly some space behind the finger grip. It flexes slightly when pressed and sounds hollow when tapped. The flash is positioned directly above this rather than to the right of the lens, which is a shame as your fingers can easily get in the way -- as ours did. The flash could be better positioned as our chubby fingers often obscured it. Shot-to-shot time is a slow 5 seconds when using the flash and around 2 seconds when it's switched off. Both of these times are too slow for our liking. Around the back, the buttons are clicky and tacky. They're well laid out and easy enough to use, but they're unrefined and unresponsive.
