Changeable covers may have been all the rage with mobile phones ten years ago, but, for whatever reason, the concept never really took off with compact cameras. With its latest RS1500 model, though, Pentax clearly reckons the audience for them is still there, with the camera equipped with ten changeable covers and two lens rings as standard. The model follows Pentax's RS1000 which worked on the same principle, only the company claims that the covers may now be changed with greater ease and with no additional tools. And, should none of the ten provided quite suit the user's personality, they're invited to download further options from Pentax's website, or even design and print their own creations using software. The new model is otherwise a carbon-copy of the previous RS1000. It sports a 14MP CCD and a 27.5-112mm zoom lens, the latter of which incorporates three aspheric elements to help control distortion and spherical aberration. This is particularly impressive for a model priced at £70, as is the 3in LCD screen on the camera's rear, although, unsurprisingly, it's resolution is at 230,000 dots.On the inside, Pentax has equipped the RS1500 with a trio of focusing options: 3-point multi area, spot and AF tracking.
If you're the sort of person who gets bored looking at the same camera day in and day out, then Pentax may have come up with the answer. You can change the Optio RS1500's appearance at will and, at around £80, you won't be charged the earth for the privilege. But is the RS1500 a one-trick wonder or is there more substance lurking behind its swappable 'skins'? We'll admit to initially being sceptical about the RS1500's unique selling point. The idea is that you can customise the camera, also known as 'the Chameleon', by shoving a patterned piece of paper under the clear, Plexiglas-style fascia. You can produce your own skins on Pentax's website, although five pre-prepared designs come with the standard model. There's also a slightly more expensive superheroes pack that comes with a bunch of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern skins, indicating that the RS1500 isn't aimed at grown-ups. It's a kids' camera. The RS1500 can deliver sharp, bright and colourful images, although high levels of picture noise are evident, even in ideal shooting conditions (click image to enlarge). The RS1500 is certainly attractively priced for a first 'proper' camera and it's not one of those 480x640-pixel toys, either.
The Pentax Optio RS1500 is a budget camera with some impressive specs, such as a 14MP sensor. The main draw will be the interchangeable front covers, enabling the user to add some creative flair to the aesthetics of the compact. In order to alter the look of the camera outside of the plethora of supplied panels a number of blank options have been provided to print onto, although it wouldn't be too tricky to cut out a panel from a 6x4 print. Elsewhere the Pentax Optio RS1500 offers a 720p HD movie mode, 3inch LCD and 4x optical zoom from a 27.5mm wide angle. All three of these aspects would usually add up to a reasonably decent camera, although the amount of models currently on the market for a similar amount with virtually identical specs means the RS1500 will have to try all the harder to impress. In terms of features there's little else to report home about, with the likes of a panoramic mode and various digital filters being par for the course in the current compact camera market. The removable front panels, which form the most prominent feature, don't feel particularly substantial as the plastic transparent cover is worryingly thin and simply falls off once the lens ring is removed.
Pentax's Optio RS1500 is an inexpensive, entry-level point-and-shoot geared toward the first time camera owner. Inside this tiny package is one giant selling point: a surprisingly capable 14-megapixel sensor that produced images of a much higher quality than we expected. Shoddy construction and difficult handling hold this model back, but overall the RS1500 is a tempting value for beginners. The Pentax Optio RS1500 produced an average color error value of 3.8 with oversaturation of approximately 109% in our lab tests. What does that mean to you? Probably next to nothing. The RS1500 is an aggressively priced low-end model, with style and functionality geared toward the beginner. So if you’re in the market for this point-and-shoot, we’d guess you’re less interested in the uncorrected delta value of our accuracy tests, and more interested in how everyday photos are going to come out. For the entry-level user, accurate color means human subjects will appear more flattering. Most images will look less like overly-processed stock photos, and more like what you see with your eyes. For this reason, color performance is one of the most important metrics for all users, regardless of experience. More on how we test color.
The Pentax Optio RS1500 'Chameleon' camera has the same system of interchangeable, customisable skins that first appeared on the RS1000. The tech specs haven't changed a bit, as this camera still has the same 14-Megapixel sensor and non-stabilised 28-110 mm lens as its predecessor. The only change is that the screws previously used to hold the perspex front plate in place have now been replaced with a circular clip around the lens. The RS1500 is a super-small camera that has an all-plastic body. The design and the quality of the plastics used leave a lot to be desired, as the RS1500 feels almost like a disposable camera or a toy. You may therefore have trouble taking this camera seriously. The buttons barely stand out from the smooth camera surfaces, and only the protruding lens ring adds any kind of interesting feature to its endless flat planes. The RD1500 has a low-definition TN screen with tight viewing angles, especially from below, and the lens wobbles slightly. Thankfully, the camera does score some points for its simple controls and basic but clear and easy-to-read menus. The main strength of this camera is that its front face can be customised.
