    Pentax K-x Review

This review is going to be a sort of new experiment. Of late I've been using Pentax as well as Sony mainly for photography, so I am going to share those experiences here on this site about Pentax cameras as well, for those readers here that might be curious. For this review, I am going to write it from beginning to end based on my experiences as they happened in sequential order. All technical information will come when I have arrived at technical points during my experience with the Pentax K-x. Think of this review as a sort of verbal video, a step by step journal of my experiences with this camera along the way. Less formal than I am used too, but much more spontaneous, hopefully more like how the average person would experience the purchase and use of the K-x. I felt it would be more straight forward and easier for this type of format and ultimately something quite different from the past. I'll share my experiences and observations through the motions of the entire process of purchasing, receiving, opening, and experiencing this camera in a much more relaxed and informal manner. So without any further non-sense, lets get right to it.

    Pentax K-x

Photos:Pentax K-x Aside from the fact that it comes in too many colors to count, at least overseas, there's a lot to like about the Pentax K-x, an entry-priced dSLR with some sophisticated features you don't normally see in that price class. Continuing its tradition of aggressively priced dSLRs, the K-x model breaks the low ground by offering video capture support in a kit that costs less than $650. It's fast, with good photo quality and an excellent noise profile. And though there are a few things about it that really disappointed me, overall I think most shooters will like it for what it is: a flexible budget dSLR that delivers. The camera body feels solid and well made, and it's a bit more compact than most of its competitors. However, like its predecessors, the K-x runs off four AA batteries, which make it heavier. Some people think AAs are a plus, others not so much. In practice, it means you can pack it with disposable lithium batteries that last a long, long time and you've got a choice between disposable and rechargeable, so I fall into the "plus" camp. One of the camera's highlights, as well as its frustrations, is the viewfinder, which it inherits from its predecessors. On one hand, it's bigger, with slightly better coverage and more magnification than most consumer models.

    Pentax K-x

The Pentax K-x is definitely the most eye-catching DSLR for the price. It’s available in such colors as red, white, and navy, which makes this camera more unique. For $599 (including an 18-55mm lens) users also get 720p video and a fast burst shooting rate of 4.7 fps. However, when it comes to image quality, the K-x doesn’t always match similarly priced DSLRs.Available in black, navy, red, and white, the K-x easily has the most distinctive design of any DSLR. It also feels particularly durable, thanks to a combination of a stainless steel chassis and fiber reinforced plastic polymer covers; Pentax generally markets its DSLRs—including this one—to outdoorsy types. At 1.8 pounds, the K-x weighs the same as the Nikon D3000, but it feels less fragile. The K-x’s layout of buttons combines one navigational dial with another for shooting modes. Like the Nikon D3000, Pentax has placed an Autofocus/Autoexposure lock button at the top of the back of the K-x, making it easy to quickly lock in on a moving subject. Other controls include delete, exposure compensation, info, Live View, menu, and playback buttons, as well as a five-button navigational area. The 2.7-inch display, which has a typical resolution of 230,000 dots, was easy to see even as we shot photos in direct sunlight.

    Pentax K-X Digital Camera Review

The lowest-priced video-enabled SLR by a substantial margin, the $650 Pentax K-x still image and video quality won't impress sophisticated shooters, but consumers will welcome the extensive feature set. Lack of high-def video output, though, is a significant blunder. The compact 12.4-megapixel Pentax K-x is currently the least expensive SLR on the market with video recording capability. It's available in three kit configurations;, a single-lens version with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens for $650, a dual-lens kit with an added 50-200mm lens for $750, and a dual-lens kit with a 55-300mm lens for $850. Unlike most SLRs, it also comes in colors, with the standard black (used in our testing), white, navy blue and red. The Pentax K-x was less accurate in its color reproduction than most cameras we test. To determine color accuracy, we shoot the X-Rite ColorChecker chart under bright studio lighting, in each available color mode, and analyze the resulting images using Imatest software to measure the color deviation from the known chart values. The score is based on the result for the most accurate color mode. The K-x offers six color mode choices, the most accurate of which is called Natural.

    Pentax K-x review

Pentax may only have a small share of the DSLR market compared to Canon and Nikon, but the handful of DSLRs the company has released during the past few years have been just as well regarded. In fact, the different route Pentax has taken gives the system a few advantages over the competition, helping to both maintain a dedicated user base and catch the attention of newcomers. While the K-7 is pitched at enthusiasts, the (now discontinued) K-m catered for novices. Accordingly, the K-x sits somewhere between the two and is described as an upper-class entry-level model. Using the K-m as a template, it has some impressive additional functionality built in, including a video facility first seen on the K-7. But against some warmly received competitors, what advantages does it offer? Given its positioning, competitors to the K-x include the Canon EOS 500D and Nikon D5000. It features a CMOS sensor of APS-C dimensions, with an effective pixel count of 12.4MP - this produces images at a maximum resolution of 4288 x 2848 pixels. As with previous Pentax DSLRs, RAW recording is offered in both PEF and DNG formats - the latter instantly compatible with Adobe's suite of editing programs - with JPEG capture offered alongside.

Product Survey: Digital SLRs and Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses

The K-x uses the same body as the K-m. We only spotted two changes – the delete button has been moved to make way for the Live View button; and the '?' button has been replaced by the green button Pentax likes so much. So the K-m's guide is gone, but the interface is still exemplary, with quick access to the most common settings and well-designed menus. The construction is as liight as ever and the display still only has 230 000 pixels, but the handling qualities are amazingly good for a body this size thanks to the deep handgrip. On the negative side, despite the return of 11 point autofocus as used on the and preceding models, there's still no display of the focusing points in the viewfinder! So in multi-zone mode, it's impossible to know what's being focused on, and – as with the K-m – we advise you to use the center AF point only. Some rather kitsch details are also annoying, like the chrome strip around the top of the body and the extremely aggressive power indicator (fortunately, a custom function lets you turn it off). Finally, although we appreciated the K-7's discretion, unfortunately the K-x fails in that department – the shutter makes an unpleasant clacking noise.
