Reviews: Video Projectors

Panasonic is presenting its PT-AH1000 video projector essentially as a scaled-down version of the PT-AT5000. On paper that means the firm has removed several more or less non-essential features, such as motion interpolation and 3D compatibility. But will these changes earn it our coveted five stars? The first change you notice is the casing. Panasonic is marking the difference between the two models by using black plastic for the PT-AT5000 and white plastic for the PT-AH1000. The design is pretty low-key, which is definitely a plus when you have it in your living room. Now for the technical specs. The optical core seems to have been revised - the brightness is now 2800 lumens, 800 more than its predecessor. The automatic focusing and motorised zoom features have been removed. The PT-AH1000 has a full range of connections, with two HDMI ports (three on the 3D version), two VGA ports (input and output) and S-Video, plus component and composite video, all on the back of the projector. The remote control is still far too simplistic, without many shortcuts. We would have preferred it to look like more than just a chunk of plastic, but at least it has the merit of being backlit.
