Review Summary: A competent long zoom digital camera with fewer frills than its ZS10 brother--unless you consider the 24-384mm lens a frill. An excellent pocket companion. The pocket-friendly body of the Panasonic ZS8 blends a 14.1-megapixel sensor and a Leica-branded 16x optical zoom lens into an good example of an "everywhere" camera, from a line that helped create the pocket-long-zoom category. In 35mm equivalents, the ZS8's lens provides everything from a very generous 24mm wide angle, to a powerful 384mm telephoto. When recording movies, a stronger focal length crop results in a 35mm-equivalent range of 28 - 448mm, still a reasonably useful wide angle, and an extremely powerful telephoto. As you'd expect with this much telephoto reach, there's a Power O.I.S. optical image stabilization system included. The Panasonic ZS8 has a 3.0-inch LCD display with 230,000 dot resolution, equating to an approximate 320 x 240 pixel array, with each pixel comprising separate red, green, and blue dots. As well as JPEG still images, the Panasonic ZS8 can capture movies with stereo sound at 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution or below, using QuickTime Motion JPEG compression.
Panasonic's Lumix TZ series has been updated for 2011 with the eagerly anticipated TZ20 and the mid-range TZ18. The TZ18 has a 16x stabilised zoom lens, a 14-Megapixel CCD and a handy Intelligent Auto mode (iA) that makes this compact a piece of cake to use, especially for beginners. The Lumix TZ18 has a classic compact camera design and handling-wise it holds no surprises. There's a slight bulge on the right-hand side of the camera that's perfectly positioned for resting your middle finger on, even if it's a little too smooth and slippery to really improve grip. The product finish is fine, but nothing more, and the main controls are responsive and don't wobble or feel loose. The camera's interface is simple and user-friendly, with a mode-selection dial (PASM, iA, video etc.), a zoom control around the shutter-release button, a four-way arrow pad (flash, macro, exposure) and a QMenu button for easy access to the main picture settings (burst mode, ISO, image size, white balance etc.). One thing we don't like is the fiddly little switch for moving between shooting mode and playback, and it's a shame there's no video button to launch recording straight away.
Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ18, or ZS8 as it's known in North America, is the simpler and more affordable version of the flagship Lumix DMC-TZ20 / ZS10. Announced alongside the TZ20 / ZS10 in January 2011, it replaces the earlier TZ8 / ZS5. Like its predecessor, it offers the same optical zoom range as the higher-end TZ / ZS version but with fewer features to keep costs down. Compared to the older TZ8 / ZS5, the new TZ18 / ZS8 features a broader 16x optical zoom range, enhanced automatic shooting and two extra Megapixels. From the old model, the TZ18 / ZS8 inherits 720p HD video recording, a 3in screen, and a wealth of shooting modes including full manual. The most important new feature is of course the new lens, which is a little wider and much longer than its predecessor: the earlier TZ8 / ZS5 employed a 12x zoom with a 25-300mm equivalent range, which the new model boosts to 24-384mm. This is what the Lumix TZ / ZS series is all about: packing a big zoom into a relatively pocketable body, and that's what's made them so successful in the past. By offering two versions with the same zoom and body, but different features, Panasonic is also covering all bases.
If you walked into a store and saw Panasonic's Lumix DMC-ZS8 and its Lumix DMC-ZS10 next to each other, you might not immediately see the differences, let alone a hundred bucks' worth of them. Even after picking them up, you might notice only that the ZS10 has a GPS receiver and a touch screen. And a stereo mic. Oh, and look, it records full HD video in AVCHD with a one-touch record button. But if none of that matters to you, then maybe the more hidden differences will, like the fact that the ZS10's screen is twice the resolution of the ZS8's and that it uses a high-speed sensor and better processor for faster shooting performance or, more specifically, faster full-resolution burst shooting and 3D photos. So, while the ZS8 might not look like it is missing $100 in features, it is. Potentially more, depending on how much you value any of the ZS10's extra features or faster continuous shooting. However, if all you're after is a speedy camera with a long lens in a pocketable body, one that takes good pictures and decent 720p HD movie clips and has semimanual and manual shooting modes, then, yes, save yourself $100 and get the ZS8. The thing is, the ZS8's photo quality is just as good as, if not slightly better than, the ZS10's.
