Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20

For a pocketable camera, the 14-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 ($350 as of May 15, 2012) is about as loaded as they come. The trait that will jump out at you--literally, if you're facing the camera--is the Lumix ZS20's 20X-optical-zoom lens (24mm to 480mm). Like that zoom lens, the Lumix ZS20's laundry list of features keeps on going and going. It's a good pocket megazoom option for manual-minded shooters, thanks to aperture-priority, shutter-priority, and full manual exposure controls. It has excellent video options, as it shoots full 1080p video at a clip of 60 frames per second. It's a touchscreen camera, but it also provides traditional buttons and dials for accessing some in-camera features more efficiently. In addition, the ZS20 comes equipped with futuristic extras, such as 3D still shooting, in-camera GPS with mapping features, a high-speed video mode, and continuous-shooting speeds that reach up to 10 fps at full 14-megapixel resolution and 60 fps at 2.5-megapixel resolution. All of that adds up to a camera that does a whole lot, though the ZS20 stumbles a bit in image quality and battery life. In the end, this camera's many benefits significantly outnumber its shortcomings.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 Review (Preview)

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 is a compact travel zoom camera with a pretty elaborate GPS setup. Not only does the ZS20 log your location, it also has a database of a million landmarks and maps of ninety countries. The ZS20 also packs a new 20X zoom lens, 14.1 Megapixel MOS sensor (which Panasonic says has less noise than the CCD used in the ZS10), super-fast autofocus, 10 frame/second continuous shooting, a great auto mode, in-camera panorama stitching, and Full HD 1080/60p video recording. As with all of Panasonic's recent travel zooms, the ZS20 has a little brother known as the DMC-ZS15. The ZS15 shares much in common with the ZS20, except for its lens (same as the ZS10), sensor (which is the same as the one on the DMC-FZ150 super zoom), and movie mode. It also lacks the touchscreen LCD and GPS functionality found on both the ZS10 and ZS20. If you read last year's GPS-equipped Compact Ultra Zoom comparison, you may recall that I was quite disappointed with the DMC-ZS10, mostly due to its image quality. Panasonic says they've taken care of that on the ZS20. Did they? Find out now in our review! Note that the DMC-ZS20 is known as the DMC-TZ30 in some countries.

Panasonic Lumix TZ30 review

Panasonic's flagship TZ camera series has always been about squeezing a big zoom into a small body. And the Panasonic TZ30 pushes the boat out. Buying GuideBest compact camera 2012: 27 reviewed and ratedLast year's Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 featured a 16x zoom and a four step increase over the 12x zoom in the Panasonic Lumix TZ10. The Panasonic Lumix TZ30 follows suit, delivering a 20x optical zoom. This gives a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-480mm, a 25 per cent increase at the telephoto end.Not that you can tell from the camera's comparatively slim proportions, of 104.9 x 58.9 x 28.2mm. The substantial lens only barrels in and out of the body once the camera's switched on and off, thanks to some fancy folded optics. The rest of the time, you're left with a sleek-looking metal shell, the design of which has remained fairly consistent since the launch of the TZ-1 in 2006.Over the years, each update to the TZ superzoom has delivered incremental improvements to the big zoom formula. However, the Panasonic TZ20 was a significant upgrade over the TZ10, introducing an exhaustive feature set that included touchscreen controls, 1080i recording and integrated GPS.

Panasonic ZS20 / TZ30 review

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-ZS20 (or TZ30 as it's known outside North America) is the latest version of its enormously popular travel zoom camera. Announced in January 2012, one year after the best-selling Lumix ZS10 / TZ20, the latest model is once again the first of this year's crop of new pocket super-zooms and takes an aggressive stance by squeezing-in a 20x optical zoom, trumping its predecessor and earlier rivals. Last year's ZS10 / TZ20 already featured a broad 16x range equivalent to 24-384mm. The new ZS20 / TZ30 also starts at an equivalent of 24mm, but now zooms 25% further to 480mm, making it the first pocket super-zoom to achieve this range, although Canon and Sony have also now released rival models with 20x zooms. That said, the ZS20 / TZ30 impressively manages to squeeze this optical range into a slimmer body than its rivals. Other upgrades include 1080p video at 60p or 50p depending on region, enhanced Intelligent Auto options, a raft of special effects, and a new 14 Megapixel MOS sensor, which may match the resolution of its predecessor, but claims 'dramatically improved' noise levels. I hope so, since this was the Achilles' Heel of the ZS10 / TZ20.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Not so very long ago, the Panasonic TZ series was a synonym for excellence, with cameras boasting powerful, high-quality zooms, good video modes, effective auto functions and good picture quality. However, since 2010, the firm seems to have got a little complacent, and the TZ range has been caught up and overtaken by certain competitors—Sony's HX cameras in particular. Could the Lumix TZ30 be Panasonic's come-back camera? Time to find out! The design doesn't hold too many surprises, as the TZ30 is clearly based on its predecessors, with a slightly elongated body and a lens set off-centre. One new feature is a little grip handle on the front of the camera with a rubberised finish. This feels pleasant to touch and helps you keep hold of the camera. The general build quality and finish is good, although the strange creaking noise when you use the zoom can be a little surprising. That, however, was probably a slight defect in our test model—we'll check it against a second TZ30 soon. The LCD has been lifted straight out of the TZ20. It therefore has the same 460,000-dot definition and touch-sensitive controls for selecting the focusing zone, taking a picture, navigating around images in playback mode etc.

Panasonic Lumix ZS20 / TZ30 image quality

To compare real-life quality I shot this scene with the Panasonic Lumix ZS20 / TZ30 using its best quality JPEG settings and lowest sensitivity - in this case, 100 ISO. As the first of the 2012 pocket super-zooms, I have decided to share results here from the ZS20 / TZ30 alone and to discuss how it compares against previous results for the ZS10 / TZ20. As we review the ZS20 / TZ30's main rivals, we'll update these pages with more comparisons. In the meantime, I shot this scene first in program to see what the camera would have chosen, then again at all aperture settings to see if there was a preferable result. The image above was taken with the Panasonic ZS20 / TZ30 with the lens set to 6.1mm (34mm equivalent). In Program mode, the camera opted for its maximum aperture of f3.7, which would seem sensible given the issues of diffraction seen on earlier models, but to be certain I reshot the scene in Aperture Priority at every f-number and discovered detail didn't begin to really deteriorate until f5.6 and beyond. But crucially the camera delivered higher contrast and sharper details at f5.0 than at larger apertures (smaller f-numbers), so that's what I've used for the crops below. Panasonic has kept the total number of Megapixels the same on the ZS20 / TZ30 as its predecessor, but claims lower noise levels.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ30 review

You want a long zoom but you'd rather not pack a long lens. You aren't alone. It's a trend that every manufacturer is hoping to satisfy now that the mad scramble for ever-higher resolutions has drawn to a close. Panasonic's latest play in this particular market is the TZ30, a compact, sturdy superzoom with plenty of extra features built in. It can be bought now for around £330. At its heart you'll find a 14.1-megapixel sensor. This is a new component for Panasonic, with both high-sensitivity and high-speed data transfer that allows it to snap 10 full-resolution stills per second. I'm impressed by the 20x zoom, which produced great results. The truly impressive part though is the zoom, the range of which would equate to 24-480mm on a regular 35mm camera. That's a 20x zoom, and an impressive range. The shorter end of the scale is perfect for wide-angle landscape shots, and the longest is well suited to wildlife and sports photography. These measurements only really make sense when experienced in practice, but it's easy to see what effect that 20x zoom can have on your images. In each instance below I have shot the same scene twice -- first at the lens' widest angle setting, and then at maximum telephoto, focusing on the area indicated by the red box. The 20x zoom on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ30 is extremely versatile.

Panasonic Lumix TZ30 review

The Panasonic Lumix TZ30 updates the hugely successful Lumix TZ20 model of yesteryear. Rather than resting on the same features, the latest release squeezes in not only a brand new 14.1MP sensor but also a 20x optical zoom lens. There's now little difference between the small-bodied TZ30's reach compared to the company's far bulkier 24x optical zoom Lumix FZ45 model. Closing that gap will please demanding zoomers, but there are bags of other features that make the TZ30 sound like a high-spec bit of consumer kit. Does it tick all the right boxes? The What Digital Camera Panasonic Lumix TZ30 review...1. 20x optical zoom; 24-480mm equivalent2. Power O.I.S. (optical stabilisation)3. Brand new 14.1MP MOS sensor4. 3in, 460k-dot touchscreen LCD5. Ranging from a wideangle 24mm and able to extend to a significant 480mm there's not much that'll be out of reach: close-up macro work, wideangle group shots, landscapes, mid-zoom portraits, or picking off far and away subjects from the horizon.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 is a pretty remarkable point-and-shoot camera. Its Leica lens starts off at an ultrawide-angle 24mm and zooms in to 480mm. That's an incredible range for a lens in a body that's just 1.1 inches thick. That's actually thinner than its 16x predecessor, the DMC-ZS10. The lens is paired with Panasonic's Power O.I.S. optical image stabilization, which has been very good in the past, and remains that way, able to handle the camera's extra zoom range. Beyond its lens, the ZS20 has a lot to offer including improved low-light photo quality from previous models and very fast shooting performance for this category of camera. It does not have all of the shooting and control options of the much larger Lumix FZ150 including raw image capture, and pixel peepers should steer clear for several reasons. But otherwise, the ZS20 is an excellent camera. Depending on what your plans are for its photos, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20's shots are either very good to excellent or unusable. If you're looking to use its 14-megapixel resolution to enlarge pictures to full size and heavily crop in, don't buy this camera (or most other point-and-shoots). Things just don't look great when viewed at 100 percent.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20

Panasonic's latest premier travel zoom is here. The Panasonic Lumix ZS20 packs a meaty 20x zoom range, a redesigned 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor, and a range of fancy features like onboard GPS, a touchscreen, speedy burst shooting, and 1080/60p video. We got to spend a few minutes with a pre-production version of the ZS20 in a back-room meeting at CES 2012. It felt like an evolutionary update to the ZS10, and Panasonic's reps seemed to indicate that they focused mainly on improving the image quality this time around. Read on for our first impressions of this new premium travel zoom. The ZS20 will be available in black, red, white, and silver from March 2012 at an MSRP of $349.99—a full $50 cheaper than its predecessor. The Panasonic ZS20’s design is standard fare for a travel zoom. It’s larger than a typical point-and-shoot, a bit too bulky for a pants pocket, but it’ll have no trouble sliding comfortably into a jacket or purse. It’s a bit leaner than last year’s ZS10 (and this year’s ZS15, by extension), and its edges are rounder, too. But it still looks like a ZS-series camera—a bit utilitarian, not as sleek or eye-catching as competing models from Canon or Nikon.

Like its predecessor, the ZS20 / TZ30 can also shoot short bursts at up to 10fps, and enjoys built-in GPS facilities which Panasonic has now enhanced with actual worldwide mapping, loaded in sections from a supplied DVD and presented at a scale of 1:25,000.
