There are tough cams, and then there are capital-T Tough cams. The Panasonic Lumix TS3 is the latter, plated in armor and built like a brick. This waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, and dustproof warrior is rated as one of the hardest rugged cameras on the market. It can fall from the greatest heights and withstand the greatest depths, yet it still fits into a jacket pocket, it’s still easy to use, and—most importantly—it takes decent pictures too. The TS3 was released in March 2011 and is available in orange, silver, blue, and red shades at an MSRP of $399, though street prices are about $100 cheaper. The TS3 was released in March 2011 and is available in orange, silver, blue, and red shades at an MSRP of $399, though street prices are about $100 cheaper. The TS3 scored just about average marks in our color accuracy tests. We measured saturation at 91.64% and the best color error result we achieved was 3.11. Both are respectable figures among point-and-shoots in general, though the TS3 has some “tougher” competition in the rugged-cam category. More on how we test color. Middle-of-the-road scores lead to a middle-of-the-road finish In our tough-cam comparison group.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 is the manufacturer's third shot at a high-end rugged camera. (It's the fourth if you include the more budget-friendly DMC-TS10.) The price continues to hover just south of the $400 mark, but Panasonic has again bulked up the feature set and durability claims. The big add-in feature this time is GPS, which makes perfect sense for a rugged camera. After all, it's tough to mark down where you were when you took a picture when there are no street signs. The TS3 is just slightly more durable than its predecessor, the TS2, being waterproof to approximately 40 feet under water compared with the latter's 33 feet. It's also shockproof to approximately 6.6 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. It's not crushproof, though, so you'll still have to be careful not to step on it or run it over. Other key specs include a 28mm-equivalent wide-angle lens with a 4.6x internal zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD, and a 12-megapixel high-speed CCD sensor. The sensor is a new design, and it's paired with Panasonic's Venus Engine FHD processor. This combo allows for high-speed burst shooting--full resolution at 3.7 frames per second--and full HD movie capture in AVCHD format.
Last year's Editors' Choice Panasonic Lumix DSC-TS2 compact camera was a powerhouse, offering great image and build quality, and HD video capture - and this rugged shooter was waterproof up to 33 feet. Panasonic continues the trend with this year's 12.1-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DSC-TS3, which keeps the same $399.95 list price, but adds an even tougher build that's waterproof up to 40 feet, along with better video options, GPS, and a digital compass. Panasonic also throws in a barometer and altimeter for adventurous types who want to know elevation and atmospheric pressure information for each photo they snap. Despite producing images that are on the soft side, the Panasonic TS3 is a tough cookie that can withstand the elements. It's tough build and innovative features make it our latest Editors' Choice rugged point-and-shoot digital camera. The body of the TS3 comes in four metallic hues (silver, red, orange, and blue) and isn't exactly minimalist. It actually looks tough: There are plenty of bumpers and exposed screws that help ensure that the camera can take a beating.
It's no surprise to see that the annual wave of waterproof compacts has washed up the Panasonic Lumix FT3—a new and improved version of the brand's all-terrain camera. Like the FT2 only brought minor changes to the original FT1, the FT3 is clearly a variation on the same theme. It's a little tougher than the FT2 (waterproof to 12 metres), has a few less pixels, a slightly different design ... oh, and there's a built-in GPS. While the FT2 was very nearly identical to the FT1, some more notable changes have been made in the FT3. It still has the same robust, 'Land Rover' style design as the previous two cameras, but the design and handling aren't quite the same. For starters, a small, rounded grip handle has appeared, on which the middle finger rests perfectly naturally. Next, the mode-selection dial has been ditched and replaced by a button and the video-record button has been moved next to the shutter-release on the top of the camera (in line with other cameras in the Lumix range). One more annoying change is that the zoom controls have been moved onto the back of the camera so that instead of zooming with your index finger (with the middle finger and thumb gripping firmly onto the camera), you now have to use your thumb to work the zoom buttons.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3: OverviewOur test is now underway, but we've already completed our resolution, noise and dynamic range tests, the results of which we would like to share with you here.In addition to its rugged credentials, the FT3 features a 28-129mm LEICA DC VARIO ELMAR, full HD movie recording and built-in GPS technology. The GPS unit automatically embeds the location where the photo was taken in the EXIF data allowing the geo-tagged images to be pinpointed social media maps. Helpfully, the DMC-FT3 also shows the name of the county, state, city, and nearby landmarks to give real-time information about the location. As part of our test we shoot our resolution chart at every sensitivity setting. The higher the value quoted in the caption score, the greater the level of detail being resolved and the better the image quality.
The Panasonic DMC-TS3 (known as the FT3 in other parts of the world) is the latest in its line of â??adventureâ? cams. The list of features gets even longer this year, including an altimeter, compass, and full 1920 × 1080 video recording. It's a sturdy camera with great handling that continues to impress us. The Panasonic DMC-TS3 is a sporty looking compact camera with a decidedly â??ruggedâ? aesthetic, as evinced by the hard angles and rivet-like screws in the face plate. It looks like it wants to be dropped down a cliff. All the elements of the body are packed in tightly: all the ports are gathered under one water-proof door, and the flash is built into the front instead of popping up. It's all in the interest of keeping the camera's components protected. The Panasonic DMC-TS3 seems to be quite easy to use, as it’s primarily designed for simple picture and video recording while you’re busy doing other things, like swimming, snorkeling, rock climbing, or some other un-nerdly activity. The buttons are all fairly large and well-labeled, so you could conceivably tap them even with gloves on.
