Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 ($599.99 direct with 14-42mm kit lens) is the smallest camera in the Panasonic Micro Four Thirds family, taking many of its design cues from point-and-shoot models. The 12-megapixel camera doesn't do as well in low light as some other interchangeable lens cameras, like our Editors' Choice Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.95, 4.5 stars), and its kit lens is a little larger than the one bundled with the Olympus PEN E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars). The camera is easy enough for anyone to use, but offers the image quality and manual controls to satisfy enthusiastic shutterbugs—in a very compact package. Design and Features Available in black, red, silver, or brown, the GF3 measures 2.6 by 4.2 by 1.3 inches and weighs 7.9 ounces without a lens. Despite having a larger image sensor, the camera itself is only slightly larger than the 2.4-by-4.2-by-1.2 inch, 8.3-ounce Nikon J1 ($649.95, 3.5 stars). The GF3's 14-42mm (28-84mm, 35mm equivalent) is a bit larger than that of the J1, and is actually about the same size of that of the Sony NEX-C3—a camera with a much larger image sensor. Olympus also includes a 14-42mm lens with its Micro Four Thirds cameras, but that lens features a collapsing design that helps to cut down on its size.

Panasonic Lumix GF3 review

The Lumix GF3 is Panasonic's third 'pocketable' compact to employ the Micro Four Thirds standard it co-developed with Olympus. Announced in June 2011, it comes only seven months after the Lumix GF2, and like that model packs a large sensor into a small body with a removeable lens mount. Marketed as 'The World’s Smallest & Lightest System Camera' the GF3 continues on the path set by the GF2 towards a smaller, simpler, mirrorless interchangeable lens camera aimed at those looking to trade up from a compact. It would be fair to say that, coming a mere seven months after the launch of the GF2, the GF3 is essentially a smaller, lighter, faster, and simpler version. A lot of the specification remains the same: it has the same 3in touch screen and 12 Megapixel sensor as in the GF2, and although the new Venus Engine FHD processor adds faster AF and continuous shooting, the best video quality remains the same full HD 1080i in AVCHD format. It's not only the GF3's weight and proportions that have diminished. The rear thumb wheel has gone as have the hot shoe and electronic viewfinder port, while the earlier stereo mics have been replaced with a mono one. There are some gains too though, with Photo Style presets introduced on the G3 and Creative Control effects reminiscent of the Olympus Pen's Art modes.

PanasonicLumix DMC-GF3

The GF3 is the latest Micro Four Thirds camera from Panasonic, eagerly shedding even more size to become the most diminutive member of the company’s small interchangeable lens camera lineup. The camera follows in the footsteps of the GF2—curiously released less than a year ago—offering a combination of touchscreen control and pocket-friendly size that will appeal to a wide variety of photographers. With higher quality options above it in Panasonic’s lineup, the GF series has certainly put the enthusiast favorite GF1 behind it, squarely aiming for those stepping up from point-and-shoot cameras in search of better image quality. It is available in red, pink, brown, white, and black, as body-only or kitted with either a 14mm or 14-42mm lens option. We found that the GF3 was able to produce colors with a color error of just 2.52 in the natural color mode, with a saturation level that was around 95% of the ideal. The natural mode does offer a flat appearance compared to the other color modes, but this led to more accurate colors that can then be altered after the fact.

Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

Just a few months after releasing the GF2, Panasonic has presented a third version of this interchangeable lens compact. The Lumix GF3 has the same 12-Megapixel micro four thirds sensor that equipped the GF1 and GF2. With each update, the camera's design has gradually moved away from the 'mini SLR' type body aimed at experienced photographers and morphed into a consumer camera with advanced automatic modes. The GF3 has changed quite a bit since the GF2 and is certainly more of an update than the GF2 was of the original GF1. It's been slimmed down by 15 mm in width and has a new design that's clearly more curvy that its predecessor. Build quality is good and the camera has a high-quality finish. The GF3 is a nice camera to hold and handle, even if we would have preferred a deeper grip handle, and all the controls are easily accessible. The new clock-round control wheel around the four-way arrows are a little too loose though, and you could end up spinning it round by accident. The screen definition is decent enough and the viewing angles are good too. However, the screen is a bit too highly contrasted, greys have a blue tinge to them and colours aren't reproduced particularly accurately (although we've unfortunately seen much worse).

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3

Rivaling not only the new Sony NEX-C3, but also Panasonic's own deluxe digicam the LX5, the Panasonic GF3 brings the Micro Four Thirds camp a new definition of small. As did Sony, to achieve this size, Panasonic had to rethink much of the control system, as shrinking bodies leave little room for luxuries like mode dials, switches, and buttons. As a result, there's a learning curve to using the GF3, but for those seeking a very small compact system camera, the Lumix GF3 has a lot to offer in a very small body. in size, Panasonic saw fit to keep the resolution of the GF3's sensor to 12-megapixels, yet they're quick to add that the same sensor improvements that impressed us in the 16-megapixel G3 are included in the GF3. Also of note, the GF3 supports Full HD video, that's 1,920 x 1,080 in AVCHD format. The main first impression one gets from the Lumix GF3 is that it's . Especially with the 14mm f/2.5 lens attached, it really does dip down into digicam territory. It's a little taller than an LX5, but less wide; thickness of course varies with the lens mounted, but it's not far off, either. We have a few comparison shots below, pitting the GF3 against the Sony NEX-C3 and Lumix G3. It's a close call with the Sony, but the GF3 makes the small, feature-rich G3 look big again.

Panasonic DMC-GF3 Review (Preview)

Review based on a production DMC-GF3, Firmware version 1.0 With the arrival of the GF3, Panasonic further solidifies the distinctions between its existing G-series lineup. The enthusiast-targeted rangefinder aesthetic heralded by the introduction of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 appears for the moment to have given way to a new directive; producing the smallest, lightest G-series camera possible. The move towards smaller, lighter large-sensor cameras with fewer external controls is not limited to Panasonic of course, as both Olympus and Sony are also courting the mass market aggressively. Announced just eight months after the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2, the GF3 is as much about omission as addition. With the removal of the EVF port and hotshoe, the GF3 stands as the only G-series camera on which a viewfinder of any kind cannot be used. Other prominent changes include the loss of the signature Panasonic rear click-dial and the camera body's sleeker, more rounded edges. These alterations give the GF3 an appearance more in line with that of a high-end compact camera than of its predecessor, the GF2. Indeed, with the GF3, Panasonic offers a seamless upgrade path for compact camera users seeking higher image quality and more advanced shooting options.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 review

The war to produce the world's smallest, lightest interchangeable-lens camera is in full swing, and the Lumix DMC-GF3 is Panasonic's latest contender. It's certainly one of the most pocket-friendly lens-swapping cameras we've ever seen but, at £500 with a 14-42mm lens, are you paying a big premium for the GF3's small size? The GF3 is a Micro Four Thirds camera, which means it has a much larger image sensor than the average compact and you can also change lenses, as with a digital SLR. But because Micro Four Thirds cameras tend not to have a viewfinder, they can be much smaller than a full-size dSLR, potentially offering the ideal balance of performance and portability. This image is slightly on the soft side but otherwise balanced and refined. The camera copes well with both subtle shades and strong colours (click image to enlarge). The GF3 is certainly highly portable. Measuring 108 by 67 by 33mm, and weighing 264g with the battery and SD card, the camera is, in comparative terms, a tiddler. In fact, according to Panasonic, it's 16.7 per cent smaller and 16.2 per cent lighter than the company's previous Micro Four Thirds model, the Lumix DMC-GF2.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 is the first of what I hope are the Goldilocks generation of interchangeable-lens cameras (ILCs): small and fast with good-to-great photo quality that finally merits attention from point-and-shoot users looking for a compelling upgrade. (Sony has consistently delivered small bodies, but the E-mount zoom lenses are too big and heavy and there's only one pancake prime currently available.) The GF3 uses the same 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine FHD processor as the GF2, but incorporates some of the enhancements from the G3, including the Light Speed autofocus system and focusing options like pinpoint and a picture-in-picture navigator for manual focus. The result is very good photo quality that borders just enough on excellent to push the rating over to that side. Like the rest of Panasonic's current generation of G-series cameras, the GF3's noise profile and JPEG processing is much better than before and it does a nice job on midrange ISO sensitivities (ISO 400-ISO 800). That said, the JPEGs aren't uniformly great; in our testing, even shots at ISO 160 had some noise in shadow areas, and Panasonic's postprocessing makes out-of-focus areas look a bit mushy rather than naturally blurred.

Panasonic GF3 review

Panasonic's GF3 is the smallest, lightest, Micro Four Thirds compact system camera (CSC) that the company has introduced to date. In fact, it's so small that at first glance you could be forgiven for confusing this latest model with Panasonic's top-end compact camera, the LX5. Unlike the Panasonic LX5, however, the Lumix GF3 accepts interchangeable lenses and the reduction in size has, in part, been achieved by a redesign of the lens mount box.Although it measures only 107.5 x 67.1 x 32mm, the GF3 is a little larger than the Sony NEX-C3. The NEX-C3 is the world's smallest interchangeable lens camera, but the GF3 has the honour of being the smallest interchangeable lens camera with a built-in flash - excluding the recently announced Pentax Q which has a compact-sized sensor. Nevertheless, the Panasonic Lumix GF3 is still 17% smaller and 16% lighter than the GF2 (read our Panasonic GF2 review) and it makes a significant difference to the camera's look and feel.Panasonic tells us that the GF2 is to continue and the GF3 is now its entry-level model designed specifically for compact camera users who want to move up to a camera that offers more control, better quality images and accepts interchangeable lenses.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3

The Lumix DMC-GF3 is Panasonic's third 'pocketable' compact to employ the Micro Four Thirds standard it co-developed with Olympus. Announced in June 2011, it comes only seven months after the GF2, and like that model packs a large sensor into a small body with a removeable lens mount. Like the GF2 before it, the most obvious difference is a reduction in size and weight over the previous model. The earlier GF2 was 19% smaller and 7% lighter than the original GF1. Now the GF3 becomes 16% smaller and lighter than the GF2 to become the smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera with a built-in flash. Indeed while the earlier GF2's lens mount protruded slightly above the top of its body, the GF3's shorter height has seen it become even more pronounced. Panasonic has made a feature of it, with a new rounded top to the body, which, with other gentle curves, gives the GF3 a much more organic look than its boxy predecessors. The GF3 is also available in black, white, red, brown and pink. Like its predecessor, the GF3 is almost entirely operated using a 3in / 460k touch-sensitive screen, and following other recent Lumix cameras, you can not only tap the subject you want to focus on in photos, but also during movies. This lets you easily 'pull' focus between subjects by simply tapping them, a process which would require precision manual adjustments on a traditional DSLR. Like the GF2 before it, you can record Full HD 1080i video in AVCHD format, or 720p in Motion JPEG. Panasonic has also upgraded the AF system to be quicker than before, although unlike the recent Lumix G3, the sensor resolution remains 12.1 Megapixels.

Panasonic DMC-GF3 Hands-on Preview

Panasonic has made it pretty clear that it believes the big market opportunity for mirrorless cameras lies in attracting compact camera users who are keen to upgrade, but don't want the bulk and complexity of a DSLR. The move from the enthusiast-friendly GF1 to the simpler, more beginner-focused GF2 was something of a disappointment for those enthusiasts, but made a lot of sense in terms of broadening the appeal of the Micro Four Thirds system. And, in the light of Sony's NEX-C3, it's pretty clear Panasonic is not alone in this line of thinking. With the GF3, Panasonic continues to court the mass market, with a camera that furthers its trend of simplification and new-user befriending. It's a gentle refresh of the GF2 but one from which even more features and controls (as well as size and weight) have been removed. It's still a 12MP camera but the addition of the latest three-core Venus Engine FHD processor gives it the impressive speed of its G3 and GH2 siblings. Building on the simple touchscreen design of the GF2, the GF3 loses Panasonic's signature rear click-dial, instead making do with a compact camera-style dial around the four-way controller.
