Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Digital Camera Review

This compact 12-megapixel ultrazoom could be a perfect traveling companion, with fine wide-angle coverage, powerful telephoto and pleasing portability. The FZ35 scored poorly in our color accuracy tests, undoubtedly due in large part to the limited color mode selection provided. Most cameras offer a few color modes to fit different needs and situations, often including standard, portrait, landscape, and vivid options. The FZ35 has only one standard color mode. There ares a few Color Effects (B&W, Sepia, Cool and Warm), but these are highly exaggerated settings not intended for day to day shooting. The standard color mode reproduces skin tones, flower blue, orange, green and magenta with reasonable accuracy. However, some of nature's favorite colors (foliage green, blue, purplish blue and red) have been shifted off their natural hue significantly, presumably favoring pleasing aesthetics over accurate color reproduction. The saturation has also been boosted by nearly 10%. One saving grace here if color accuracy is dear to you: there is a Picture Adjustment section of the Record menu that allows manual tweaking of contrast, sharpness and saturation, though each offers only five settings.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35

The new DMC-FZ35 is the first wide-angle megazoom camera (18x) offering higher-quality high-def videos. 2009 will go down as the year HD video and digital cameras joined at the hip. Most high-quality digicams take 720p movies, a huge step up from standard-def clips. Check them out on a big-screen HDTV (42 inches plus) and the results will stare you in the face – and that’s a good thing. Panasonic is one of the few companies using AVCHD Lite, a variation of the system used by expensive high-def camcorders such as the Canon Vixia HF S10. Available also in the $349 Lumix DMC-ZS3 and the GF1, AVCHD Lite is not as good as true AVCHD, but the quality is a cut above the competition. Let’s see how far that is, as we put the FZ35 through some hoops. The FZ35 is a very compact, lightweight megazoom camera. Dressed in all black, it looks like a DSLR on a diet. Forget interchangeable lenses; It has a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 18x zoom with a very wide 27-486mm focal range dominating the front. Just a few logos are here as well, including “HD” and a small gold Lumix demarcation. It’s tidy, neat and clean, although we could live without the large, screaming “18x” on the lens barrel.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35

With the Lumix DMC-FZ35, Panasonic overhauls the insides of its popular FZ28 megazoom, offering higher resolution, an improved optical image stabilizer, faster AF, and support for the AVCHD Lite movie codec. But while the camera does deliver better performance and photo quality than its predecessor, they're still not great--typical for these megazooms--and only a robust feature set makes it really stand out from the crowd. On the small and light side for a typical megazoom, the camera feels a little plasticky but comfortable to grip and shoot. Rather than participate in the lens X wars, Panasonic sticks with its tried-and-true 18x zoom lens, a model that goes back several generations and which remains more than adequate a range for the general-purpose shooter. Panasonic manages to cram a boatload of capabilities into the FZ35. In addition to the typical set of modes--PASM, preset scene program, and an intelligent auto--the FZ35 provides a very robust movie mode with manual controls and the ability to save three groups of custom settings. While that's one more set than the FZ28 has, for this model Panasonic had to stuff them all into a single dial slot to make room for the other features.
