The Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Blu-ray player packs a lot of features into an affordable package. It has built-in Wi-Fi, 3D support, and even an SD card reader, all for $114.99 (direct). It wasn't too shabby in our lab tests, either, with quick load times and very good video processing. It isn't quite as well-designed as the Editors' Choice budget Blu-ray player, the LG BP620 ($149.99, 4 stars), but it comes close. The front panel of the 1.5- by 16.9- by 7.1-inch (HWD), 3.3-pound BDT220 is a single piece of glossy black plastic that tips down to expose the drive tray, SD card slot, USB port, and Play/Stop buttons. The panel is punctuated by a shiny silver Panasonic logo and a shiny blue Blu-ray logo, and part of it is translucent to let the blue LED display shine clearly through. Power and Eject buttons sit on top of the panel, accessible even when the panel is flipped up over the other ports and controls. The back of the player holds an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, another USB port, optical and stereo analog audio outputs, and a composite video output.
If I had to recommend just one Blu-ray player for 2012, it would be Panasonic's DMP-BDT220 (about $135 street price). It's in the sweet spot of Panasonic's Blu-ray lineup, with built-in Wi-Fi and an excellent set of streaming-media services, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, Vudu, MLB.TV, and Pandora. And while competing players from Samsung and Sony offer just as many streaming apps, they're hamstrung by awkward user interfaces. The DMP-BDT220 also has a few other perks, like 3D compatibility, 2D-to-3D conversion, and Skype, although the front-panel SD card slot is probably the most useful. Granted, the DMP-BDT220 isn't that much better than its competitors, but it also doesn't have any major flaws. (Its inability to play back DivX and Xvid files may be its biggest drawback.) The Panasonic does cost a little more than some decent budget alternatives, like the Samsung BD-E5700, but the difference is only about $15. Altogether, the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 is the best current value, earning CNET's Editors' Choice Award for the Blu-ray player category. The DMP-BDT220 has one of the sleekest looks from the outside, with a long front panel devoid of buttons.
The days when a Blu-ray player merely spun discs and made tentative contact with the internet via BD Live, are long gone.Decks like this Panasonic DMP-BDT220 are network connected in the truest sense, as happy to stream IPTV as they are to play the latest 3D Bu-ray releases. The DMP-BDT220 is one five new 3D compatible BD players from Panasonic for 2012. It sits just above the entry-level DMP-BDT120, and below the more advanced DMP-BDT320 and the audiophile grade DMP-BDT500.Joining it in the range is the oddball DMP-BBT01, a compact designer player not much bigger than a couple of Blu-ray cases. Not that this model is carrying any surplus weight. It follows the full-width (430mm), half-depth (185mm) design which has become so popular with mainstream brands, and stands just 38mm tall. One consequence of this half-deep design is that you can't sandwich it between other full-size 430mm components, it has to sit on top.Cosmetically, the deck is pretty anonymous. A full-width grey fascia flap conceals the loading tray, front-mounted USB port for media playback and SD card reader. At the rear of the player you'll find HDMI, composite video and stereo phono audio and optical digital audio outputs.
