The Optoma PK301 projector’s brightness is at least as compelling as the 3M MPro150’s integrated software suite. Road warriors never know what type of environment they’ll be making their pitch in, and the PK301 is much more forgiving of poor lighting conditions. It’s capable of producing 50 ANSI lumens while running on AC power, and drops to 20 lumens—a level equivalent to 3M’s projector—while running on battery power. The Optoma hooks up directly to your PC, and you can also run content off 28MB of internal memory, USB keys, and MicroSD cards. Unfortunately, any content run locally on the projector must first be converted via software on your computer, and you’ll also need to buy your own card if you go the MicroSD route. The conversion is a royal pain when you’re tweaking your presentation at the last possible moment, but we’re still thankful for the USB support. 3M’s projector has a USB port, but it’s only for transferring files from a host PC to onboard memory. The PK301 uses Texas Instruments DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology to produce its images. DLP projectors create an image by bouncing light off microscopic mirrors arranged in a matrix on a semiconductor.
Third product in the Optoma mini-projector range, the PK301 is a small device designed for the business world and family both. The manufacturer calls it "" and though pocket-sized has announced the image at over 3 metres. The photo may give you the impression that it's normal-sized, but you can hold it easily in your hand. The manufacturer has nevertheless managed to cram in quite a few components. Connectivity is good with a Universal port (on which you can plug a VGA adaptor), a mini HDMI, an AV in (audio/video), an audio out (mini jack) and a micro USB. The projector includes a speaker (the sound for which can also transit via the HDMI socket) and a battery with battery life announced at 1h30 (in eco mode). A micro SD socket gives you the option of increasing the limited internal memory capacity. It can take cards of up to 32 GB (you'll need to budget in the region of £85 for this). You can also play content from a USB key if you buy the appropriate adaptor for the micro USB socket. The PK301 comes with a small remote (not backlit) and functions at noise levels of 30 dB in cinema mode (a little noisy) and drops to 22 dB in eco mode though there is a very noticeable reduction in brightness.
Optoma knows a thing of two about projectors, so it's no surprise that the PK301 is not only small and light, but made with the same quality as its larger siblings. This pico pumps out a relatively bright image, and we really appreciate the convenient focusing ring. However, the PK301's relatively high price and short battery life hold it back. And you have to jump through some hoops to view PowerPoints. The Optoma PK301 looks like one of the company's larger projectors was left in the dryer too long. The rectangular device measures 4.7 x 2.7 x 1.2 inches and weighs a light 8 ounces. It's all black, save for the chrome-colored focusing ring around the lens, and the sides have vertical slats to allow air in.On the back of the device are inputs for its 24-pin universal connector, mini-HDMI, audio out, A/V in, microUSB, and power. On the right side is a microSD Card slot, and the bottom houses the battery and a tripod mount. The PK301 comes with a lightly padded case. The PK301 is also bundled with an adapter cable that connects the universal port to VGA. a 2.5mm-to-component connector, and a USB cable. Sadly, the included documentation--a simple fold-out pamphlet--is skimpy compared to the 160-page, 16-language booklet that comes with the Samsung SP-H03 projector.
When Optoma designed the PK301 Pico Pocket Projector ($400 street), it must have been thinking that in a world of 10- and 12- lumen pico projectors, a 50-lumen model would be king. Indeed, it may be. Although the PK301 is a little bigger and heavier than most of its dimmer competitors, it's also the brightest projector today that can fit in a shirt pocket. Brightness isn't the projector's only strong point. It's also packed with features. Like many pico projectors, it's built around a DLP chip joined with a red-green-blue LED light source. But unlike most it offers a native widescreen format, at 854 by 640 pixels, one of the variations on wide VGA. It also offers more connection options than most and can read files from internal memory, MicroSD card, or USB key, so you can show presentations, photos, or video without having to carry a computer or video source with you. All of these are good reasons, even without the high brightness, to put the PK301 on your short list. In many ways, the PK301 is a study in tradeoffs between size, weight, and battery life on the one hand, and brightness on the other - less in terms of design issues you can't do anything about than decisions you can make about how to equip and use it.
