Optoma EW330 review

The Optoma EW330 is the most expensive data projector in this group test, but it's also the smallest and lightest. With an overall weight of just 1.2kg, it is perfectly designed for life on the move. The compact chassis feels solid and is more than tough enough to be carried in a bag alongside your laptop. The zoom ring is hidden away inside the main body of the projector, while the focus ring sits on the outside. Through the use of a clever design it works exceedingly well without protruding too much. The menu buttons are a little small and fiddly to use at first, but the menu software is easy to get to grips with. With a brightness of 2200 ANSI lumens and a standard 2000:1 contrast ratio, you can use this projector in most lighting conditions. We found image size to be acceptable for smaller meeting rooms, but not nearly big enough for larger spaces. Connectivity is kept to a minimum, with a single D-sub port and s-video connection. However, there is also an HDMI port in place, so you can connect to a high-definition (HD) digital source with ease. What we like best about the EW330 is the image quality it delivers. During our presentation tests we found it offered a very sharp contrast between black and whites, with documents looking crisp.

Optoma Technology EW330 Projector

High-quality, widescreen images and superior brightness make this projector a top choice for both business and home use. The compact, 2.4-pound Optoma EW330 ($899 as of 8/7/09) is a lamp-based ultraportable projector that features 1280 by 800 (WXGA) resolution and enough illumination power--a considerable 2200 lumens--for use in a large conference room. It's a good choice for a classroom or lecture hall, too, since it can tolerate a reasonable amount of ambient light without washing out the image. In our tests, for instance, the EW330 successfully displayed a 10-foot-diagonal image at 15 feet away from a clear white wall, in a room with a fair amount of ambient daylight. Like the InFocus IN1102, the EW330 has a native wide aspect ratio (16:10) that makes it a perfect delivery system for a presentation from a widescreen laptop. It's also a good match for projecting widescreen DVDs and HDTV, and it includes an HDMI port (HDCP compliant) for displaying digital content from a computer, a TV tuner, or another video source that shares an HDMI connection. You'll need to use a separate device for sound, though, since this model lacks a built-in speaker.

Optoma EW330

The Optoma EW330 has the distinction of being one of the smallest and lightest ultraportable projectors we‘ve tested. First, its wide aspect-ratio image (1280 x 800 pixels) is a perfect match for today’s laptops and HDTVs. Second, its impressive brightness—more than 2000 ANSI lumens—is very good for a 2.4-pound device. Third, the image quality is both needle-sharp and rock-steady. And, last but not least, Optoma includes a full-function remote control. You won’t find a better buy in this weight class for $899. Although it’s light and compact, the EW330’s relatively standard boxlike shape won’t garner any oohs and aahs from your audience when you pull it out of its carrying case. On the top panel, the Power button is poorly labeled (note to Optoma: dark gray text on a gray background is pretty much unreadable). In fact, it doesn’t even look much like a button. The rear panel features a bare minimum of input jacks—VGA, S-Video, and composite video plus USB for control—with one notable addition: the increasingly important HDMI jack for connecting to notebooks and video equipment.
