The Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player squares off with name brand competitors in our review and we come away very impressed.In 2006, Internet-direct merchant Oppo Digital caught a lot of attention by serving up super high-performance video and audio playback with its DV-970HD up-converting DVD player. Since then, Oppo has taken its success and poured it into improving and refining its products, year after year. Now, Oppo takes its brand of excellence and brings it into the Blu-ray disc age with the BDP-83 Blu-ray player. A true universal disc player, it will play SACD, DVD-Audio, HDCD (as well as just about anything else you can throw at it) – and will do it faster and better than most rivals. Though the Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray disc player is missing a couple of today’s popular streaming media features and costs a bit more than its competition from LG, Samsung and the like, fear not. The device delivers where it counts and can hang with some of the most expensive high-end players available.As an Internet-direct company, Oppo needs to package its wares well lest they arrive in less than beautiful condition after a cross-country voyage.

Oppo BDP-83

Ever since standalone Blu-ray players hit the market, there's been a great deal of anticipation for an Oppo Blu-ray player, mainly because of the company's reputation for making excellent upconverting DVD players. Oppo held out for quite some time, and in retrospect it was a smart move; almost all the early Blu-ray players were plagued with usability problems and hardware limitations. After a long beta-testing period, the Oppo BDP-83 is finally here and it lives up to the hype. The player feels fast and reliable, and has outstanding image quality on Blu-rays and DVDs. It's a true universal disc player, handling both DVD-Audio and SACD discs in addition to Blu-ray Discs, CDs, and DVDs. On the other hand, the Oppo BDP-83 really isn't for everyone. It lacks Wi-Fi and, more importantly, streaming media features such as Netflix and Pandora that are available on cheaper Blu-ray players from Samsung and LG. At $500 list price, it's also very expensive compared with the Sony PS3 Slim ($300), which also offers excellent Blu-ray playback--and can play high-definition video games, stream media, and browse the Web.

Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player Review

While not a household name, Oppo Digital has made a name for themselves among both videophiles and audiophiles for their DVD players, which have combined top performance with great value. When I reviewed their last DVD player, the since discontinued DV-983H, I remarked that they had pushed the DVD format to its limits, as the 983H made a DVD look at good as it possibly could. So, the next logical step was to turn their attention to the Blu-ray format and the result is the new BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray player. Oppo never rushes a product to market and the BDP-83 has been no exception. In an unprecedented move, Oppo had two prereleases of the BDP-83 in what they called their “Early Adoption Program”. In the first release, fifty customers (chosen at random from a list of interested customers) were given the opportunity to purchase the BDP-83 and report their experiences with the player (comments are posted on Oppo's website). This led to a number of firmware upgrades being issued (as with previous Oppo products the firmware is user-upgradeable) to improve performance.
