Olympus Tough TG-820

The Olympus Tough TG-820 ($299.99 direct) isn't the company's top-end rugged camera, but it's no slouch in terms of toughness, performance, or image quality. The go-anywhere shooter packs a 12-megapixel image sensor, a sharp 5x zoom lens, and 1080p30 video capture capability. Images at higher ISOs are a bit noisy, and it doesn't have a GPS radio, which makes the more expensive—and better performing—Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS ($399.99, 4.5 stars) our Editors' Choice rugged camera. Design and FeaturesThe TG-820 , available in black, silver, red, and blue, looks a lot like other rugged cameras on the market. Its lens is housed in the top corner of the camera, and unlike others, is covered by a protective sheet of metal when not in use. The camera itself measures 2.6 by 4 by 1 inches (HWD) in size and weighs 7.3 ounces. It's a bit larger and heavier than the Olympus Tough TG-320 ($179.99, 3 stars), which measures 2.5 by 3.8 by 0.9 inches and weighs 5.5 ounces. The TG-820 is also differentiated from its lower-priced sibling via the dual locking system on its door—you'll need to move two switches, in the correct order, to access the memory card, battery, and interface ports, so there's very little chance that you'll open it accidentally while underwater.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Year after year, Olympus proves to be the master of the waterproof compact market, selling models ranging from low-cost beach-cams (TG-3 series) to indestructible adventurers (TG-8 series). For 2012, Olympus has outed the Tough TG-820, which is waterproof to 10 metres and shockproof to 2 metres, just like its predecessor, with which it also shares a lens. Don't be fooled by these similarities, however, as the TG-820 has been updated with an entirely new set of internal electronics, including a BSI CMOS sensor. The front face of the TG-820 is almost identical to that of the TG-810, although the bump that formally housed the GPS has been removed ... along with the GPS itself, in fact. The back of the camera has changed completely, as the vertical zoom control and column of buttons leading down to the four-way arrow key has been ditched in favour of a more classic camera interface. The zoom control can now be found around the shutter-release button, the four-way arrows have been moved up to make them more easily accessible, and the wrist-strap hook has cleverly been combined with a new thumb-rest. On the whole, the camera feels quite plastic (although the front face is partially covered with a metal plate) but the finish is good, and the TG-820 feels like a quality camera.

Olympus TG-820 (Preview)

The Olympus TG-820 is a waterproof camera that both looks and feels like a tough-cam should. It doesn't have a flashy or gimmicky design, but instead looks much like last year's TG-810 camera from Olympus, albeit with a few minor alterations. The camera also has a new sensor, a new 1080p movie mode, and a few feature upgrades over its predecessor. Of the waterproof cameras we’ve reviewed this year at CP+, the Olympus TG-820 has the most traditional look and aesthetic. The tough-cam design of the TG-820 has the look and feel of a tank or lock box, with its brushed metal exterior and thick, rectangular shape. It doesn’t look like a toy like the Canon D20, and it doesn’t feel like a sporty adventure cam like the Pentax WG-2. The TG-820 is more sophisticated, more polished, and, in a way, it’s more bland. Maybe it’s a tough-cam for people who don’t want to overtly advertise they have a rugged camera. Although, Olympus does print the word “Tough” in huge letters on the front of the camera—so it’s hard to conceal the fact that you’re carrying around a durable camera when it has that branding.
