Olympus SZ-20 review

Olympus's SZ series is quickly growing a reputation as producing good quality superzooms in impressively compact bodies, and the SZ-20 is no different, sporting a slim and compact body yeah a burgeoning specification. The model features a 12.5x optical zoom, covering a focal range of 24-300mm in equivalent terms, a lens which is also supported by dual image stabilisation for steady shooting. A 16MP 1/2.3in backlit CMOS sensor takes care of the capture side of things which facilitates 1080p full HD video capture and Olympus's manual single-lens 3D imaging capability as well as continuous shooting up to 9fps, albeit in reduced resolution mode. These nuts and bolts of the camera are held together with Olympus's TruePic III+ image processor that, Olympus claims, aids colour reproduction and keeps image noise to a minimum. Meanwhile, an impressive 3in, 460k-dot LCD fills the rear of the camera with controls kept to a minimum and most camera control operated though the model's LCD screen and control wheel. With regards to design, the SZ-20 owes a lot to its big brother, the SZ-30MR. The body has a retro and angular feel to it, although it's smaller than the 30MR and, as a result, sits a lot easier in the hand when shooting.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

While the µ 9000 series camera was formerly Olympus' only superzoom compact, the firm has seriously upped the ante in its 2011 range with a whole load of different models to choose from. So after the VR-330, the SZ-10 and the SZ-30 MR, now here's the SZ-20. It has a zoom of 'just' 12.5x (equivalent to 24-300 mm) and a 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. So is this cheaper version of the SZ-30 a bargain worth snapping up? The SZ-20 looks and feels very similar to the SZ-30 MR. This model is heavier and bulkier but it has the same deep grip handle and the same 'mini bridge' type design, particularly due to its mechanical pop-up flash housed in a bump above the lens. This is a well-made camera and while the buttons on the back aren't quite as nice as those on the SZ-30, the SZ-20 still has a decent quality build. Note, however, that there's no mode dial on the top of the camera. Plus, the SZ-20 only has one image processor, so it doesn't have the same 'multi-recording' functions as the higher-end SZ-30 MR. It therefore has the same basic interface and controls as other Olympus compacts, with a nicely designed Quick menu (with image preview for exposure, white balance etc.) that doesn't lag like in previous models.

Olympus SZ-20 review

Pitched at the entry-level end of Olympus' Traveller class of cameras, the new SZ-20 enters the point-and-shoot arena with a 12.5 x super wide-angle zoom and rather extensive feature package, set to persuade existing compact users to upgrade. As well as touting an impressive focal range that spans from an equivalent reach of 24 to 300mm, the SZ-20, which on sale exclusively via Jessops, crams in reams of attractive features under its chunky, metal chassis. One of the most bragged about assets is the hand-held Starlight Mode, designed to allow users to capture blur-free images in low-light without a tripod, supported by the vital inclusion of Dual Image Stabilisation. Aimed at impressing sports and action fans, Olympus has included technology to provide shooters with an array of high-speed continuous shooting modes allegedly achieving 7fps full resolution and 15fps at 5MP. For landscape fanatics the device includes the brand's Smart Panorama feature, which not only stitches the scene in camera but is recorded using a sweeping motion rather than the more tricky alignment method some rival models employ.
