Olympus SP-800UZ

The Olympus SP-800UZ is based around a 1/2.3"-type CCD image sensor with an effective resolution of fourteen megapixels, coupled to a 30x optical zoom lens. Images have dimensions of 4,288 x 3,216 pixels or below. The Olympus SP800UZ's lens offers actual focal lengths ranging from five to 150mm, equivalent to a useful 28mm wide angle thru a very powerful 840mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/2.8 to f/5.6 across the zoom range. Importantly, given the reach of the zoom lens, the SP800 does include mechanical image stabilization -- specifically, a sensor shift system. There's no optical or electronic viewfinder, with all interaction taking place courtesy of a 3.0-inch LCD display with 230,000 dots of resolution. The Olympus SP-800UZ uses a iESP Auto contrast detection autofocusing by default, with the ability to switch to spot AF if desired. Both AF tracking and face detection functions are also included. Exposures are metered with Digital ESP metering by default, and both spot and face detection metering modes are also available. 2.0EV of exposure compensation is available, in 1/3EV steps. Shutter speeds range from 1/2,000 to four seconds.

Product Survey: Bridge Digital Cameras

With the SP-800 UZ, Olympus has once again pushed the limits of the integrated optical zoom one step further with an incredible 28-840 mm (30x) zoom lens. The figures are certainly impressive, and should give camera sales-staff something to shout about. However, a zoom this size can also create problems, notably for stabilisation and focusing. So what can the Olympus SP-800 UZ and its 30x zoom really deliver? For a camera with a 30x zoom, the SP-800 UZ is actually quite small. It looks a bit like one of Olympus' larger compact cameras with a zoom lens and a grip handle stuck on. The camera would easily fit into a small bag or even a large jacket pocket, and weighs just 430 g when fully loaded. Light it may be, but the camera's weight unfortunately isn't distributed evenly, and it's inevitably heavier under the lens. This makes handling rather clumsy, especially since the side handle is too small for you to grip the camera in a tight and confident manner. The SP-800 UZ is clearly intended for the mass-market or even beginners, as the interface is relatively meagre and features an integrated user-guide to the camera's functions and some basic principles of photography. The large 3-inch screen takes up most of the back of the camera.

Olympus SP-800UZ First Impressions Review

When we think about a 28-840mm zoom lens, a bazooka-sized piece of gear springs to mind. What a pleasure, then, to hold the 14-megapixel Olympus SP-800UZ in your hand, with all that close-up from far-away potential in a camera that weighs just 14.7 oz. and sells for $350. We took a pre-production version of the latest, longest ultrazoom out there for a test drive at PMA, and here's what we found. Looking at this fearsome lens from the front, it's important to remember that the camera body is only 4.2 inches wide. The three holes to the lower left of the lens cover the speaker, the two to the upper right of the lens shield the mono mic. All of the back controls are found in a panel to the right of the 3-inch, 230,000-dot LCD. The top red button triggers movie recording directly, without fiddling with mode dials and such. There's an activity indicator lamp below that. The dial with an OK button in middle works two ways: as a control dial that turns, and as a push control providing access to the info display toggle and image delete function. Below that is the menu button, and beside it the question mark, which accesses the built-in user manual.
