Looking back at how digital camera development has progressed years, if you'd said to me only five years ago, you'd be able to buy a 16-megapixel consumer compact with that resolution and a 21x zoom lens for under 200 I would have simply laughed. Well, 10-years into the SP range, you can do just that and the 179.99 Olympus' SP-620UZ marks the company's latest iteration of the SP range and is an affordable entry into the world of ultra-zoom compact cameras it is. Succeeding last year's 14-megapixel SP-610UZ the SP-620UZ features a series of updates that sit alongside the 16-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor and its remarkable 21x ultra-zoom lens. Olympus' TruePic III+ image processor and a range of 'Magic Filters' plus a new 3D image feature able to combine two separate photos into a single 3D image. The 720P HD video recording functionality from the older SP-610UZ remains along with a mini HDMI port for connection to an HDTV, though disappointingly, that HDMI cable needed to do just that is an optional extra. Four AA batteries, a set of which is included with the camera, power the SP-620UZ.The main appeal of cameras such as the SP-620UZ is their ability to capture everything from a wide landscape, fleeting wildlife on to stunning close ups thanks to the camera's super close up mode.
Recent bridge camera/superzoom releases such as the Fuji X-S1 might have suggested cameras sporting large, fixed lenses were evolving into luxury items second only to DSLRs. Blowing that theory is the Olympus SP-620UZ, which is resolutely a budget-priced, entry-level superzoom. Priced at £179.99 in the UK and $199.99 in the US, it is not much costlier than your average 5x zoom pocket model, yet sports a dual image stabilised 21x optical zoom plus 16 megapixel effective resolution from a 16.6MP 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor. The mini DSLR styling of the Olympus SP-620UZ means it's one for chunky jacket pockets only, but it is one of the smallest in its class. Dimensions are 109.7 x 74.3 x 73.7mm and it weighs a sturdy feeling 435g, largely just because it's powered by four alkaline AAs out of the box rather than a single rechargeable lithium ion cell. The equivalent 35mm focal range is 25-525mm, the lens jutting out roughly 2cm from its housing when at its widest setting. The Olympus SP-620UZ's available with a metallic silver or black body, and is aimed at beginners and travelling types rather than photo enthusiasts per se.
By far the chunkiest member of Olympus' refreshed consumer line-up is the SP-620UZ. It's a hefty beast of a camera, with four AA batteries in the grip and a 21x zoom to the front, equivalent to 25-525mm in a regular 35mm camera. You can pick one up now for around £160. It's worth comparing it directly to its sibling, the Olympus SZ-14. The biggest difference between the two is resolution -- the SZ-14 tops out at 14 megapixels but this extends to 16 megapixels on the SP-620UZ, albeit on the same size sensor. Despite their differences in size, with the SP-620UZ close to twice the depth and more than double the weight of the SZ-14, the latter actually has the longer zoom, stretching to 24x, or 600mm in a regular 35mm camera. Wrap your mitts around the SP-620UZ if you're more attracted to chunky fellas than the lithe and wiry SZ-14. So why would you buy the SP-620UZ? Apart from the higher resolution, which will tempt those of you who shop on headline figures alone, the primary benefit is the brightness of the lens. While the SZ-14 is fractionally brighter at wide angle, with a maximum aperture of f/3.0, compared to the SP-620UZ's f/3.1, it's stepped down by more than one stop at full telephoto, stretching to just f/6.9 compared to the SP-620UZ's f/5.8.
The Olympus SP-620UZ will replace the company's existing mid-range ultrazoom, the SP-610UZ, and offer a higher megapixel count but slightly reduced optical zoom. That's actually a good thing, because less zoom usually means better image quality. Other than that, much of this camera will be the same as its predessor, including price: $199.99. The SP-620UZ will be available this month, in either black or chrome. The 620UZ’s appearance has barely changed since the preceding model, and unfortunately that means it’s rather ugly. Olympus ultrazooms do not have the appearance of serious photography devices, and indeed even the expensive SP-810UZ looks like a toy. The 620UZ is no different, with its plain, plastic front, and sparse rear panel. With the exterior as plain as it is, at least the look is not intimidating for newcomers. Inside the camera, the same beginner-friendly features common to many Olympus cameras are back. The excellent in-camera help guide is featured on this model, and gets its own button at the bottom right of the rear panel.
