Size and affordability remain the bane of the interchangeable-lens camera (at least here in the U.S.), but Olympus' PEN E-PM1 hits the closest to the target that I've seen thus far. It's not perfect, and in fact it's kind of hard to get excited about. But there's a lot to like if you want to upgrade to the speed and photo quality of an ILC but don't have a lot of cash to spend. Plus it comes in a handful of pretty colors. The camera's photo quality rates as good-to-very good, but I think most of my issues with it stem from the kit lens. It's the same lens that ships with all Olympus' PEN models, but for some reason it irked me more this time around. Of course, that helped drive home the attraction of using an ILC instead of a point-and-shoot; when I couldn't get any landscape shots out of the 14-42mm lens that didn't look muddy, I switched to a Lensbaby. Close-ups look pretty sharp and snappy, but detail at a distance generally looks oddly oversharpened or overcompressed when viewed at actual size. It seems independent of ISO sensitivity, and the camera can handle up to ISO 800 pretty well, depending upon image content. Shooting raw helps, but not as dramatically as it does in other cameras. I have no complaints about the color or exposure, though; it handles those very well. Video quality is adequate.
The Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1 is one of the most affordable mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs) to date. It was announced in June 2011 alongside the mid-range E-PL3 and flagship E-P3, and like all Olympus PEN cameras, is based on the Micro Four Thirds standard it jointly developed with Panasonic. Unlike previous PEN models which were aimed at photo enthusiasts though, the E-PM1 is the first Olympus ILC to really address the needs of those trading up from a point-and-shoot camera. As such it's the smallest, lightest, most accessible, and affordable model in the range. The E-PM1 is based on the same updated 12.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor as the other two models in the range, the E-PL3 and flagship E-P3. It has a fixed 3in screen with 460k pixels and is capable of shooting 1080i60 video. Like all PENs it benefits from built-in sensor-shift image stabilisation that works with any lens and very fast auto focus. Consumer-friendly features include iAuto mode with 'Live Guide' results-based controls for easy manipulation of colour and exposure controls. But the E-PM1 isn't just for novices.
The Olympus E-PM1 is the entry point into the company's 2011 interchangeable lens PEN lineup, complementing the higher-end E-PL3 and E-P3 options. The E-PM1, also known as the PEN Mini, is the smallest and most affordable of the group, but it retains many of the same features and roughly the same innards of its companion models. That gives it performance similar to the more expensive PEN cameras, with some manual controls and features given up in the name of keeping the price down. The camera's available in silver, white, purple, brown, pink and black, and debuts with a 14-42mm kit lens at a MSRP of just $499. Read through our full review to see our final conclusions on one of the most intriguing compact system cameras of the year. We found the Olympus E-PM1 offered solid color accuracy for a camera of its type, with a color error that hovered around 3.29. This isn’t superb for an interchangeable lens camera, but it’s an acceptable result for a camera that clearly favors more vivid, saturated colors. The color score was brought down somewhat by blues and magentas, but skin tones remained natural and flush in the natural color mode, which we found to be the most accurate. More on how we test color.
The classically-styled PEN series of Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens cameras has given Olympus the opportunity to draw attention to the small, popular half-frame models that it produced in its film heyday. But it wasn't just the size and style of the PEN and Trip cameras that lay behind their success - it was also their simplicity. And it's this ethos that explains the E-PM1, or PEN Mini as it is likely to be promoted to its target audience. The Pen Mini really does live up to its name. With a prime or collapsible kit zoom lens mounted, it is very small indeed. It isn't quite pocketable, but it's undeniably more convenient to carry around than any DSLR. To go with the user-friendly size, Olympus has opted for a beginner-orientated design and interface, with the bare minimum of buttons and dials. Hidden underneath, though, the E-PM1 retains much the same feature set as the enthusiast-targeted E-P3. The more-advanced functions aren't quite as easy to get at, but they're almost all there. A such, the PEN Mini's appeal is potentially two-pronged. To novice photographers or compact camera upgraders its appeal lies in the fact that it is a small, lightweight and inexpensive (especially in the US, where Olympus's pricing is particularly aggressive) interchangeable lens camera which offers plenty of features without being intimidating.
Designed for the casual snapper who doesn't want to compromise on image quality, the Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1 is similarly specified to contemporary Olympus PEN models, but with an emphasis on ease of use and simplicity of design. Compact system cameras (CSC) like this have exploded in popularity in the last year or so, due to their promise of high quality images and the flexibility of interchangeable lenses without the bulk of a DSLR. The compact dimensions are possible because the reflex mirror used in a DSLR camera is absent, enabling the lenses to be placed much closer to the image sensor. The design also enables a much larger image sensor to be used than would typically be found in compact cameras. Having a larger image sensor should result in less noise at higher sensitivities, because there's more surface area per pixel to capture light to form an image.Priced at around £450 with the standard 14-42mm kit lens and available in a range of different colours, this PEN is the cheapest and most compact of three new additions to Olympus' range of compact system cameras, the other two being the PEN E-P3 and the PEN Lite E-PL3. Its rivals include the Panasonic GF3 and Sony NEX-C3.
Alongside its P-series expert-level cameras and more affordable PL models, Olympus has also launched the Pen E-PM1, a simplified camera with fewer controls than its advanced counterparts. The E-PM1 is aimed at a wider range of consumers, including novice users who are used to the simple controls typically found in compact cameras. On the inside though, the E-PM1 is pretty much identical to the Pen E-PL3 and is therefore is likely to offer similar performances to this and other Olympus micro four-thirds cameras. Note that the E-PM1 is lined up as an almost direct rival for the Panasonic GF3. With the large-format sensor and bulky zoom lenses imposed by the micro four-thirds format, making a camera that's compact, stylish, practical to hold and—above all—light, is no mean feat. Although there's no easy solution, Sony's NEX-5N and Panasonic's GF3 haven't done a bad job. Olympus has done pretty well here too, with a PM1 that's plain, simple, classic and timeless—especially this satin black model we tested. That said, grip could definitely be better, as the super-smooth camera body does tend to slip out of your hands. It's therefore practically impossible to use with just one hand.
The classically-styled PEN series has given Olympus the opportunity to draw attention to its film-era history of making small, popular cameras. But it wasn't just the size and style of the PEN and Trip cameras that helped their success - it was also their simplicity. And it's this ethos that explains the E-PM1, or PEN Mini as it is likely to be promoted to its target audience. The logic behind the design is undeniable - the collapsible zoom and slightly smaller sensor of the PEN series (compared to Samsung's NX or Sony's NEX cameras), helps make the E-PM1 an impressively compact package, so far as large-sensor mirrorless cameras go. There'll still be arguments that it's not truly pocketable, but it's undeniably more convenient to carry than any DSLR. So, depending on how you look at it, the PEN Mini is either the most simplistic mirrorless model yet, or most of the company's flagship E-5 DSLR for the cost of a high-end enthusiast compact. Either way, its combination of being both relatively small and relatively inexpensive is worth looking closely at.
Mirrorless interchangeable cameras are making headlines with new models arriving almost weekly. We test the Olympus PEN E-PM1 which is the newest, smallest and cheapest one currently available to see if it’s your next dream camera.Olympus recently introduced three new PENs ranging from $499 to $899 and the Mini is the lightest and most affordable of the bunch. All three have 12.3-megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensors. Of course you have to give something up to save money. In this case, it’s a titling LCD screen, built-in flash, faster focusing and several other features. That said, the PM1 is the most affordable mirrorless interchangeable lens camera available at $499 for the kit including a 14-42mm lens (24-84mm 35mm equivalent) and attachable flash. By comparison the next closest is the Sony NEX-C3. This 16.2MP APS-C sensor camera is $599 with an 18-55mm lens (27-82.5mm). There are other differences but the point is this—if you want to buy a light, interchangeable lens camera on the cheap, the PM1 is your baby.We have to admit the body of the PEN Mini is very sleek, solid and compact with a minimal amount of buttons. Our review unit was black, but it’s also available in five other colors—purple, pink, brown, white and silver. Pick your poison.
The Olympus PEN E-PM1 ($499.99 direct with 14-42mm kit lens), nicknamed the PEN Mini, is the smallest, lightest and least-expensive entry in the current Olympus Micro Four Thirds lineup. This compact interchangeable-lens camera is designed to be easy for photography novices, but also offers more advanced menu options to satisfy experienced shutterbugs. It doesn't offer the best image quality in its class, that honor goes to the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.95, 4.5 stars), but there is a lot of value to be found when you consider its cost—and its small size. Design, Features, and User InterfaceThe 12-megapixel PEN Mini is strikingly simple in its design. Its aluminum body is finished in black, silver, white, brown, pink, or purple, each offset with a chrome lens mount and top plate. You don't get a front hand grip, but a rubber thumb grip is located on the rear right to help you get a good grab on the small camera. Measuring 2.5 by 4.3 by 1.3 inches (HWD), the camera is close in size to the 2.5-by-4.3-by-1.5-inch PEN E-PL3 ($699.99, 3.5 stars). But it weighs just 7.7 ounces without a lens, compared with the E-PL3's 9.3 ounces.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but this Pen is mini-er. The new Olympus Pen E-PM1, or Pen Mini, is the first of a new branch of the lens-swapping Pen range. It's one of the smallest interchangeable-lens cameras going, and one of the friendliest in a range of cheerful colours. The 12-megapixel Pen Mini goes on sale in the autumn, with a versatile 14-42mm kit lens. Prices will be revealed nearer the time. It's based on the Micro Four Thirds format and uses Micro Four Thirds lenses, a range of standard-sized glass that gives you different effects for different situations. Panasonic also makes cameras and lenses that use the Micro Four Thirds format, so there's plenty of choice when you're swapping in lenses. Micro Four Thirds cameras aren't as big as traditional lens-swapping dSLRs. They miss out the mirror mechanism inside, but don't give up any of the features or flexibility, so they're suited to use both as a versatile back-up for seasoned photographers and a lightweight option for amateurs looking to get serious. The main drawback of Micro Four Thirds is that the sensor is smaller than in a dSLR, but it's still much larger than the sensor found in most compact cameras.de
