The Olympus E-P1 is the company’s first Micro Four Thirds camera. When the Micro Four Thirds format was first announced both Panasonic and Olympus spoke of smaller-bodied cameras, and with the Panasonic Lumix G1 we saw just what was possible with this mount. The G1 looked very much like a miniature SLR camera, but without the mirror system that defines them. For Olympus’s answer to this new mount the company took a look back to a camera concept that it created in 1959 – the half-frame Olympus PEN. This classic design became the basis of its new Micro Four Thirds camera and so, in June of this year, the Pen Digital was announced, otherwise known as the Olympus E-P1. Is the EP1 as groundbreaking as the original? The What Digital Camera Olympus EP1 review lifts the lid... In keeping the Olympus E-P1 true to its history, some features you may expect on a modern digital camera have been sacrificed. Most of the original Pen cameras featured a fixed lens and had a basic viewfinder. The Pen F did allow for interchangeable lenses, and used a sidewards mounted pentaprism to allow a through-the-lens (TTL) optical viewfinder.
It’s a point-and-shoot! It’s a DSLR! No, actually, it’s a Micro Four Thirds camera. What’s that, you say? It’s a class of camera that attempts to match digital SLRs’ speed and image quality, but uses the same technology as a point-and-shoot, which, in part, keeps them much smaller than DSLRs. The idea of the Olympus PEN E-P1 ($799) is to give consumers and advanced photographers the best of both worlds: an excellent portable camera that that also takes strong photos. While the image quality is up to snuff and it’s faster than a point-and-shoot, the speeds don’t quite match lower-priced, full-size DSLRs, and you don’t get an integrated flash. Nevertheless, the E-P1 is one of the most innovative cameras of the year. First things first: although it’s not fair to classify the E-P1 as a point-and-shoot, it works more like one than a DSLR (which, for the record, it is not). The name Four Thirds refers to the size of the camera’s sensor, which is the same as a DSLR’s. However, a DSLR, which stands for “digital single lens reflex,” has an internal mirror system that contributes to its unbeatable speeds.
Nine months after Panasonic brought out its G1, Olympus is offering its vision of the micro four thirds. The manufacturer has chosen to revive it as part of a 1960s mini-SLR range, the Pen Fs, with an ultra compact retro camera. A nice idea but does the Pen E-P1 live up to expectations? Getting to grips with the E-P1 is a rather particular experience. Although everyone will recognise the retro look, reactions are mitigated: older users seem to enjoy the retro feel but younger ones are a lot more critical – "big", they say, "ugly", "not modern". The E-P1 doesn’t remind them of anything and stepping back in time holds no pleasure for them. Leaving feelings to one side (the author of this review is obviously one of the older users), the E-P1 is well built with a nicely assembled metal casing. A thumb patch and an adhesive rectangle give nice handling and the camera is quite light (around half a kilo and ready to go with its 14-42 mm zoom, only just 400 g with the 17 mm) until you start adding heavy accessories (see inset). Unfortunately, like with the E-400 series, you’ll note that Olympus has put the attachments for the strap in just the wrong place, to the point where you quickly develop the habit of getting hold of the camera above the strap to put it in the palm of your hand!
