In the summer of 2009, Olympus announced the beginning of a new era of small, interchangeable-lens digital cameras, as the company debuted its first Micro Four Thirds-system camera, the Olympus E-P1. Less than five months later, the company introduced the P1's sibling -- the Olympus E-P2 -- retaining many of its predecessor's features, but with a variety of important differences. The company is continuing to align its Olympus E-P series cameras with the old PEN system of film cameras, dating back to 1959, and like the previous model , the E-P2's style reflects that heritage. The Olympus E-P2 uses the same 12.3-megapixel sensor from the E-P1, capable of both still and HD video capture. Body styling is also largely unchanged, with the biggest difference being a change in body color and finish. Where the P1 was offered in either silver with black trim, or a white with tan trim limited edition, the P2 gets a new color scheme. The body itself is still stainless steel, but now has a thin layer of black paint under a clear coat, giving a translucent black finish, accompanied by black trim panels. Looking a little closer, the other main difference is the addition of a new accessory port reminiscent of that in Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GF1.
Photos:Olympus E-P2 The Micro Four Thirds-based E-P2, Olympus' slightly more feature-rich, significantly more expensive brother to the E-P1, inherits a lot of what I liked about that camera--and some of what I didn't. It shares the elegant-but-functional body design and smooth, natural photo quality of its predecessor as well as the slow performance. The E-P2 is extremely similar to the E-P1, though it only comes in an elegant shiny black as opposed to the silver and white versions of the E-P1. The most notable addition to the body is an accessory port, which makes the body slightly higher. Olympus currently offers two accessories for the port: an add-on tiltable electronic viewfinder that slides into the hot shoe, which comes bundled with the camera. That's nice--it's an extra-cost option with the Panasonic GF1. Though I'm not a big fan of EVFs, the viewfinder is a very nice example of the breed. It's quite bright and contrasty, well magnified and sufficiently high-resolution for manual focusing. The updated manual focusing system, in which the manual focus magnification is linked to the focus point, helps as well. And the tilt makes a big difference in shooting flexibility. The other accessory is an adapter for an external microphone.
Not much has changed, and the body, sensor and screen are all exactly the same as before. The main innovation is the arrival of the adjustable electronic viewfinder, much vaunted by Olympus and capable of focusing using any lens; the E-P1's optical viewfinder was stuck at 17 mm. The body of the E-P2 is almost exactly the same as the E-P1. The only difference is that the top is a little higher, leaving room for et excellent viewfinder (see inset). We weren't surprised to find that it felt the same and that the same things stood out. It's clearly been carefully built, handles well, is compact and has an excellent scroll wheel and options dial. Less impressive are the location of the strap, the 230 000 pixel LCD screen and the never-ending menus with confusing options. Olympus claims to have improved the responsiveness of its camera, and while we don't like to be contrary, we simply couldn't see any improvement at all in this area. There's just no comparison with SLRs, which remain unbeaten, especially for moving subjects. That's true when using the viewfinder at least: live view on the screen is often another story ... But whether you use the 17 mm lens or the 14-42 lens, the E-P2 is noticeably faster than your average compact.
The 12-megapixel, interchangeable-lens Pen E-P2 is the second Micro Four-Thirds camera from Olympus. It offers the same great-looking, old-school design as its predecessor, the Olympus Pen E-P1, but ups the ante a bit with some unique in-camera modes and the inclusion of an attachable, eye-level electronic viewfinder (EVF). It's available in two kit configurations, bundled with a 14mm-to-42mm f3.5-to-f5.6 M. Zuiko ED zoom lens (the configuration we tested for this First Look) or with a 17mm f2.8 M. Zuiko pancake lens. Although it's approximately the same size as Panasonic's most-compact Micro Four-Thirds system camera, the Lumix DMC-GF1, a couple of important differences distinguish the Pen E-P2 from that competitor. The E-P2 lacks an on-board flash (the hot shoe that supports the EVF or an external microphone can also handle a mountable flash); but unlike the Lumix DMC-GF1, it does have in-body stabilization, which means you don't need stabilized lenses to get that feature. The eye-level EVF is also a notable difference. The Pen E-P2 is also more expensive, sold at $1100 as a kit with either the 14mm-to-42mm zoom lens or the 17mm prime lens.
Olympus today announced the E-P2, a compact Micro Four Thirds camera that looks and feels nearly identical to the E-P1 released just a few months ago (reviewed here). Closer inspection reveals one significant hardware alteration, though: a new accessory port located on the back of the camera, just below the hot shoe. And in the system box is the major upgrade that takes advantage of that new port, an electronic viewfinder provided as standard equipment. The accessory port can also be also used to mount an external microphone adapter, the EMA-1, which will be sold separately. The microphone adapter adds a stereo jack to the system — any standard stereo mic can be connected. Pricing for this adapter hasn't been announced. Under the hood are a few additional upgrades from the E-P1. Full manual control of shutter speed and aperture are now available in movie mode. A new continuous autofocus tracking system has been added, that follows subjects automatically as they move in both still and movie modes. Two additional art filters, Diorama and Cross Process, join the six existing choices.
