Micro four-thirds cameras are slowly but surely flooding the market and Olympus has refreshed its PEN line of mirrorless DSLRs with the new E-P3. This is a continuation of the PEN line of compact system cameras, but Olympus has made some major additions to the EP3 over the EP2. This model has the same 12.3MP Live MOS sensor found on its predecessor, the E-P2. The E-P3 houses a new TruePic VI image processor which is dual core. That effectively means that you can continue using the Live view mod [...] Read the entire article

The design of the new PEN E-P3 is very similar to that of the E-P2 and E-P1 with a few notable distinctions - including a pop-up flash.Firstly, the mode dial, which is rotated by the thumb of your left hand on the E-P2, has been moved to the right-hand side of the E-P3's top plate - as on the PEN E-PL2. This sits to one side of the shutter release button and on the other is the customisable Fn2 button.ABOVE: The Olympus PEN E-P2ABOVE: Olympus's new PEN E-P3Like the P2, the Olympus E-P3 has a long control dial built into the thumbrest on its back. On the Olympus E-PL2 this position is taken by the video button, but on the E-P3, the video button is on the camera's back to the left of the thumbrest and small speaker.ABOVE: Olympus's new PEN E-P3ABOVE: The Olympus PEN E-P2There has been a litt...

Olympus Imaging America Inc. has today announced not one, not two, but three new models for its PEN series of compact system cameras, and we've just published hands-on previews of two of the three; first up, the Olympus E-P3. The Olympus PEN E-P3 follows in the footsteps of 2009's E-P2, assuming the flagship position in the PEN-series lineup. While body size and styling is very similar to that of its predecessor, the Olympus E-P3 sports a number of significant changes. Key among these is likely its new high-speed contrast detection autofocus system, dubbed "Frequency Acceleration Sensor Technology" autofocus....(read more)

There can be no doubt: it's an exciting time to be drooling over camera gear. Photography buffs - whether they're pros or serious amateurs - are falling over themselves to embrace a new but rapidly maturing breed of new equipment: compact system cameras. The internet is so thrown for a loop over this gadget that photographers can't even quite agree on what to call this new offspring of the ever-popular DSLR cameras and the cheeky, high-end breed of clever compacts. Whether you call them MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera), EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable lens) or just 'fancy bridge cameras', you could do a lot worse than sticking one of these on your shopping list. It just might completely change the way you take pictures. We've had a look at what's out there and com...

Olympus is reportedly working on a new camera with single shot HDR capabilities, able to create a high dynamic range image from a single frame. Most conventional HDR systems – such as that on the iPhone 4 for example – combine at least three frames of varying exposures to form a single picture with extra detail in both brighter and darker areas. However, according to 43 Rumors‘ source, Olympus is developing an in-camera HDR system that can do it with just one original frame to work from. The exact nature of the system is unknown, though a Canon patent application spotted midway through 2010 suggested using exposure mapping across a single RAW frame that could then be used to tweak exposure at individual pixel level. Although not spelled out by the Olympus source, the sa...
