Camcorder Reviews

Back in 2008, the Nikon D90 blazed a trail for SLR cameras that can also shoot quality video, and the Nikon D7000 picks up where it left off. It might be bigger, but it also packs in more features and is aimed at a demanding audience of expert photographers. New additions include 1080/24p video and a line in for a mic. What a treat: I ususally shoot video on another SLR, the Canon 5D Mark II, but I have to say that filming with the D7000 is an even better experience. You use a toggle switch to activate the video mode and then press a button to start recording. The whole thing is housed inside a tough magnesium body and the screen is protected by anti-scratch cover that should be a lesson to other manufacturers. The LCD screen that it's taking care of measures three inches from one corner to the other and has a resolution of 920 000 pixels, which offers pretty good coverage, even for a camcorder. We tested the D7000 using a 18-105 mm Nikkor lens that retails with the body in a kit that costs around £1000. It has optical stabilisation, and a wide-angle of 27 mm in 24 x 36 mm equivalent, which gives it a very wide field of view for a camcorder.

Nikon D7000

With the D7000, Nikon has created a new category in its broad DSLR line. At $1200 (body only, as of May 9, 2011; also available as a kit with an optically stabilized 18-105mm/f3.5-f5.6 lens for $1600), the D7000 offers a midrange alternative to the higher-end Nikon D300s and the slightly long-in-the-tooth but more affordable Nikon D90, which the company released in 2008. Offering a full complement of advanced and automatic features, a new 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 3D color-matrix metering, good low-light performance, full 1080p high-definition video, and full-time autofocus in video mode and Live View, the D7000 is an extremely appealing DSLR for enthusiasts and prosumers. Basic Features Like other DSLRs currently on the market, the D7000 is equipped with manual, semimanual, and automatic exposure options; two custom setting modes and 19 scene modes round out the basic shooting choices. The D7000's 16-megapixel CMOS sensor gives the camera the second-highest resolution in the Nikon DSLR line, equalling the sensor found in the D5100, and bested only by the 24-megapixel sensor in the $8000, professional-level D3x.

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 represents an evolution of the company's venerable D90 -- the first digital SLR with movie capture capability and the first mid-range model with a high-res 3.0-inch VGA LCD panel. Externally, the Nikon D7000 is similar to its predecessor in terms of size, weight, and much of the controlled layout, but adopts a weather-sealed, magnesium alloy construction like that of the D300S. Nikon emphasizes that the D90 will remain in the lineup. Graced with a 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, the Nikon D7000 is the second consumer Nikon to exceed the 12-megapixel mark. A/D conversion is 14-bit, handled by the new EXPEED 2 image processor. Capable of shooting up to 100 JPEGs at 6 frames per second, the Nikon D7000 exceeds its predecessor's utility for action shooting, and Nikon also keeps the pressure on in the ISO sensitivity department, with standard ISOs ranging from 100 to 6,400, but reaching to 25,600 in its expanded range. Metering is also improved in the Nikon D7000, with a new 3D Color Matrix Metering sensor with more than twice the pixels of past sensors at 2,016 pixels instead of the 1,005 in Nikon's pro cameras. A new Multi-CAM 4800DX autofocus sensor now sports 39 autofocus points, nine of them cross-type.

Nikon D7000 Review

Review: A professional feel and features make Nikon’s ultra-capable D7000 one of the hardest cameras to find on the market today, for good reason. It’s one of the key truths of the consumer electronics biz: Prices will drop like a rock soon after you buy your new toy. Oh, there are exceptions, like the iPad and iPhone, but you know the drill — buy it today, see a lower price in a month. Amazingly there is a pricey camera, the 16.2-megapixel Nikon D7000, that’s currently defying the laws of CE gravity—if you can even find one. Let’s see why.The Nikon D7000 doesn’t look radically different than many other mid-range, all-black DSLRs on the market, such as the 18-megapixel Canon EOS 60D ($999 body only). With the 18-105mm kit lens, the Nikon has a no-nonsense vibe that says “I’m a serious camera.” Don’t even think of casually carrying it around. The D7000 measures 5.2 x 4.1 x 3 (WHD, in inches) and weighs 1.5 pounds without a battery, card or lens. Hefty and serious indeed.Looking closely at the D7000, you get an inkling of its capabilities, but nothing that quite gives away its position as the hottest DSLR on the market. It has the usual Nikon red accent on the grip and a few judiciously-placed logos and icons.

Nikon D7000

For Nikon fans, the D7000 has been an agonising wait. Even those looking to buy their first enthusiast-grade dSLR, or even people upgrading from their D60's and D3000's. A few Canon users would also have been curious. And while Nikon launched the D7000 around three months back, review samples were scarce, or so we had been told. The release was inevitable, given the D90's age. What we were curious to see, is whether the D7000 would be a gentle refresh, or would it be more of an evolution. The pricing was another factor. The D90 debuted at above Rs. 90,000 with kit lens, and now goes for as little as Rs. 50,000. But calendars and product cycles apart, the D7000 was more needed by Nikon than desired by us. For while the D90 was toe-to-toe with the Canon EOS 50D, the EOS 7D killed it. While the 7D sells for 80,000 body only, for many, the brand new sensor, excellent ergonomics and focussing system and great high ISO performance was all the justification needed to shell out more dough. Then the veritable 7D sensor spawned the EOS 60D and the EOS 550D - more thorns in Nikons side. Given that Sony just released a 16.2-megapixel sensor with their A55 dSLR, it was only a matter of time before a customised version was delivered to Nikon's doorstep.

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 is a powerhouse camera at an excellent price. It offers a huge range of features that will make shooting quicker and easier for the experienced shooter, with lots of customizable options and quick control access. However, we did find that the images it took were a little soft, and the higher ISO settings were rather noisy. The Nikon D7000 is an SLR for the serious photographer. The large, rather heavy boasts a lot of features and controls, providing quick access to a lot of features for manual control. It captures 16.2 megapixel images from the CMOS sensor, and includes two SD/SDHC/SDXC card slots which can be used simultaneously or in parallel. To take good pictures, a camera has to be able to capture colors accurately. That’s what we test here: how well a camera can capture the 24 colors on our test chart. We found that the D7000 had good color accuracy, capturing most of the test colors with only minor changes from the original. It did struggle slightly with some colors, though: the blues on our test chart were a little lighter than we like to see, and lacked some of the subtlety that would make photos of blue skies look natural.

Nikon D7000 review

The Nikon D7000 is the company's latest mid-range DSLR. Announced in September 2010, the D7000 technically replaces the enormously popular D90, although that model will remain on sale while stocks last. The new numbering clearly positions the D7000 above the D5000, with the D3100 below both. Like the D90 before it, Nikon has deployed the latest technologies on the D7000 without losing sight of the desires of traditional photographers. The resolution has been increased from 12.3 to 16.2 Megapixels, while the movie mode now captures Full HD 1080p at 24fps with support for autofocus while filming. Continuous shooting has accelerated from 4.5 to 6fps and the viewfinder coverage increased to 100% over the previous 96%. The D90's 11 point AF system has been boosted to a new 39-point system, while the metering now employs a 2016 pixel RGB sensor instead of the previous 420 pixel system. Nikon's also toughened-up the D7000 by using magnesium alloy on the upper and rear plates, whereas the D90 was all plastic, and there are now dual SD memory card slots.

Nikon D7000 review

A new 16.2 million pixel sensor plus novel AF and metering systems, mean it's all change with the Nikon D7000 - the new Nikon DSLR that some believe is the Nikon D90 replacement. Angela Nicholson takes a closer look at the Nikon newcomer and also compares the D7000 vs D90.As it has 16.2 million pixels on its CMOS sensor the Nikon D7000 has a higher resolution than all other Nikon APS-C (DX) format DSLRs. In fact it is only trumped in this respect by the top-end Nikon D3X, which has 24.5 million pixels on its full-frame (FX) sensor. However, the D7000 is aimed at enthusiast photographers and sits between the 12.3-million-pixel Nikon D300S and D90 in the DSLR line-up, with a list price of £1099.99.Though it has quite a bit in common with the Nikon D90, the control layout is very similar, the D7000's construction is closer to the Nikon D300S's as both cameras have a magnesium alloy body shell rather than the polycarbonate version of the D90. In some ways the Nikon D7000's specification surpasses that of the D300S, not least in pixel count.

Nikon D7000

When it comes to mid-to-high-end dSLRs, it takes quite a bit to float my boat these days. I'm not looking for whizzy new features, bold redesigns, or insane burst rates for either myself or the shoppers I advise; to me, the perfect camera just gets out of the way between my eye and the final photograph (and perhaps video). That's a lot more elusive than you'd expect. But shooting with the Nikon D7000 frequently came close to delivering the photographic tinglies in a way I haven't felt in way too long--I think since I gave the Canon EOS 5D Mark II an Editors' Choice Award almost two years ago. Of course, the usual caveats apply: it's not the right camera for everyone and it's not best at everything. But its combination of design, feature set, performance, and photo quality for the price is hard to beat (and will be especially so once the street price starts to drop). There's a variety of new Nikon tech in the D7000 over older models, including a new Nikon-designed 16.2-megapixel sensor coupled with its Expeed 2 processor; with this pairing, Nikon ups its analog-to-digital conversion to 14-bit processing. There's also a new metering sensor and more sophisticated autofocus system.

Digital Cameras: SLRs, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

This ambitious new camera comes with a rock solid spec including a viewfinder at 100%, a 16 Megapixel sensor, a new 39 point autofocus system and two SD card slots. The new camera body is well-designed and manages to combine the compact form of Nikon's enthusiast SLRs with some of the usability of its professional models. You'll find the battery and memory cards nestled in foam-lined slots, a separate dial to control the shutter release mode, room for two SD cards (one for JPEG and one for RAW photos for instance) and a toggle switch that moves from using the optical viewfinder to Live View on the screen-and therefore to recording video. The optical viewfinder has been upgraded since the D90: not only is it as wide and bright as before, it now covers 100% of the field you're about to photograph. The body is solid and inspires confidence, with a shutter that's guaranteed for 150 000 cycles immediately marking it out as a serious camera. At the back, an LCD screen display 920 000 pixels (VGA resolution) across three inches. It's reasonably accurate and has a removable plastic cover that protects it from scratches.

Nikon D7000 review

Since its announcement earlier this year, the Nikon D7000 has set tongues wagging from the word go. With brand new autofocus and metering systems this release is the first to see the latest 16.2MP sensor and is far from Nikon resting on its laurels. But just how impressive is the D7000 and can it set itself apart from the competition to be the ultimate camera in its class? The Nikon D7000 is keen to stand itself apart from the older Nikon range as an all-new camera. Indeed, to dispel the myth of it being a D90 replacement, it's worth pointing out that both cameras will continue to run in the current Nikon range for the time being and the gap between one and the next is fairly considerable. The D7000 adopts a new 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, suggesting that the megapixel count for DSLR cameras is clearly still on the rise. The APS-C size of the sensor means the usual 1.5x magnification applies (i.e. 18mm is the same as 27mm in a full-frame 35mm equivalent). Paired up with the Expeed 2 image processing engine, the D7000 also boasts Nikon's latest hardware for speedy processing and the capability to expand the already well-specified ISO 100-6400 sensitivity to a top-end Hi2 setting - the equivalent of ISO 25,600. For those looking to reel off bursts of images in continuous shooting mode, the D7000 offers a pleasing 6fps.

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 is the new king of the hill for the middle of Nikons SLR lineup, fitting into their lineup between the D90 and the D300s. This new camera increases the resolution of both stills and video to 16.2 megapixels and 1080p respectively, as well as adding a second SD card slot and a number of new shooting features that could make it a good pick for serious shooters who want to keep shooting no matter what goes on around them. The D7000 is a brick of a camera, weighing in at over 24 ounces without the lens. You are certainly going to feel that weight when it is around your neck, but that’s not unusual with cameras like this. It certainly feels robust, though; the covers snap tightly closed and the buttons and dials feel like they would stand up to an extensive amount of use and rough treatment. Nikon claims that the body is built around a magnesium alloy frame along with a large number of rubber seals that keep out dust and water. We didn’t test this (we doubt Nikon would have appreciated us dunking the pre-production samples that were on show at the Photokina show), but it does feel very solidly built and should stand up to rough treatment.
