Nikon D600 Review

The Nikon D600 is a new full-frame digital SLR camera featuring a 24.3-megapixel FX format sensor, 39-point AF system, 14-bit analogue-to-digital conversion and a glass prism optical viewfinder with 100% frame coverage. Weighing in at 760 grams without a battery, the Nikon D600 is the lightest FX format DSLR camera Nikon has ever produced. Other highlights include a shutter unit designed for 150,000 actuations, an ISO range of 100-6400, extendible up to 25,600 and down to 50; dual SD card slots with SDXC and UHS-I support; a dual-axis virtual horizon; in camera HDR exposure blending; and Full HD video capture at a variety of frame rates, with the ability to output an uncompressed live video stream to external recorders. The Nikon D600 is available now for £1734.95 / €2385.99 / $2,099.95. It is also sold in a kit with the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens for £2148.95 / €2981.99 / $2,699.95. \"The times, they are a-changin'...” A year ago if you were a Nikon shooter in need of a full-frame camera with more than twelve megapixels, your only option - other than switching over to Canon.

Nikon D600 Review

The Nikon D600 is a full frame, mid-size DSLR with a 24.3-megapixel CMOS image sensor, targeting enthusiast photographers. The Nikon D600 is one the most affordable full-frame DSLRs available. While hardly cheap, this $2,099 camera is, simply put, terrific. Just how good? It could change the way you look at digital photography. Read on for the very pleasant details. We'll get down and dirty soon, but first, some words on why the D600 takes really fine images. As noted, this is a full-frame camera. In comparison to the $599 Nikon D3200, the two cameras share the same number of megapixels, but the chip inside the D600 has more than twice the surface area of the popular D3200. With larger pixels, it's easier to capture photos in low light with a minimal amount of noise. Far more important is the fact the colors have the lush “analog” feel of 35mm film. We were blown away by the results, so much so that this jaded camera reviewer rediscovered how fun and rewarding photography could be after using it. The same can be said about other full-frame cameras like the Sony SLT-A99 and Canon EOS 6D. The Nikon D600 is a classic DSLR, which brings some real benefits and drawbacks.

Nikon D600

Building off the surprise success of the popular D800, and recognizing the demand for a cheaper full frame camera, Nikon announced the D600 at this year's Photokina. The incredible 36-megapixel sensor found on the D800 does not return, instead we trade down to a still-impressive 24.3 megapixel CMOS. Other key features include a 39-point autofocus system, ISO sensitivity that maxes out at 25,600, continuous shooting at 5.5 frames per second, and 1080p HD video recording. But let's be honest, the best feature is still that tiny price tag. The D600 retails for only $2,099, going head-to-head with the Canon 6D in the newly-formed “affordable” full-frame market. The overall design of the D600 is quite similar to the D800, but not quite identical. The D600 is smaller and lighter than its older brother, but styling and control characteristics remain similar. The most important hardware features have also, thankfully, been carried over from the D800. This means we’re treated to an excellent optical viewfinder, tall pop-up flash arm, and robust buttons and dials throughout. We’re also excited about Nikon’s new 24-85mm kit lens, which is debuting with the D600. It is a sturdy piece of engineering with a convenient focal range.

Nikon D600

Review Summary: Getting closer to the mainstream 35mm SLR, Nikon's D600 carries a lower price than any full-frame predecessor, and delivers the high image quality you'd expect from a Nikon full-frame camera. With an interface more like the D7000 than the D300, the D600 is tuned for the enthusiast photographer.Pros: Great controls for amateur or pro; Good grip and heft; Impressive low-light performance; Very good dynamic range; Excellent battery life; Built-in lens correction.Cons: Dust and oil spatter problem; Moire problem with certain subjects; Slower X-sync speed; Slow AF in Live view mode; Aliasing in videos. Signaling the dawn of the affordable full-frame digital SLR camera, the Nikon D600 features a 24.3-megapixel FX CMOS sensor, an optical viewfinder with ~100% coverage, a 3.2-inch 921K-dot LCD, and dual SD card slots for US$2,100, body-only. It's true, $2,100 isn't exactly cheap, but it's more affordable than the $3,000 Nikon D800, and not much more than the long-in-the-tooth D300S, which cost about $300 less at launch. Shoot with a full-frame SLR and you learn: you really want to shoot full-frame. Is the D600 Nikon's answer for D300S shooters?

Nikon D600 In-Depth Review

Nikon officially announced the long-rumored and much-leaked D600 a week before the Photokina trade show in September. The D600 is a full-frame DSLR aimed at enthusiasts, with a price to match. At a body only price of $2099/£1955, the 24MP D600 is significantly cheaper than its big brother the D800, and on a par with Canon's recently announced 21MP full-frame EOS 6D. The D600 - which offers similar build quality and operational ergonomics as the popular DX-format D7000 - is a significant camera, even with the Canon EOS 6D arriving hot on its heels. The D600 matches or exceeds the pixel count of every other full-frame DSLR bar one (the D800) at a pricepoint which puts it within the reach of many enthusiasts. For those of us who've been covering the industry for a while, it's sobering to remember that the first full-frame DSLR, the Canon EOS 1Ds, was announced almost a decade ago. It doesn't seem like so long ago that full-frame was the holy grail of consumer digital imaging, promising liberation from crop factors once and for all, and a return to a simpler time where a 24mm lens actually was a 24mm.

Nikon D600 review

Bigger is better, the saying goes, and nowhere is that more true than where cameras are concerned. The lure of a full-frame sensor can be sufficient to drive many users towards an upgrade -- a fact Nikon clearly recognises. It's busy pushing chips of that size into more of its mid-range models, among which sits the D600. It's a chunky beast of a camera, and heavy with it, but it's packed with all the controls and features you might ever need to make best use of its monster resolution. The D600's native resolution is 24.7 megapixels, which when you allow for the unused pixels around the edge produces 6,016x4,016-pixel shots. They're written to SD, SDHC or SDXC memory cards loaded into a pair of parallel slots. This dual-slot setup is becoming increasingly common on more advanced dSLRs and affords great flexibility. Option one is to carry on shooting for longer with the D600 set to switch to the second card as soon as the first is full. If you prefer the belt-and-braces approach, you can settle on option two, and use the second card as an instant backup -- useful for wedding photographers who won't be wanting to take any risks -- or there's option three: write different formats to each card, with raw NEF files on the first, and JPEGs on the second.

Nikon D600 review

The Nikon D600 is a 'budget' full-frame DSLR aimed at enthusiasts upgrading from mid-range models or pros looking for an affordable backup for a higher-end body. Announced in September 2012, it's positioned roughly between the full-frame D800 and crop-format D7000 and combines many aspects of both models. Along with a new 24 Megapixel full-frame FX-format sensor, you get the 100% viewfinder coverage and 3.2in screen of the D800 in addition to most of its movie features, along with the build and twin SD card slots of the D7000. The D600 features a new 39-point AF system that's compatible with lenses down to f8, a built-in AF motor which will drive older non AF-S lenses, 5.5fps continuous shooting, an expanded sensitivity range of 50-25600 ISO, Nikon's 2016 pixel metering sensor and a built-in flash. The movie mode offers 1080p at 24, 25 and 30p, or 720p at 25, 30, 50 or 60p. Impressively there's also the mic input, headphone jack, DX-crop mode and uncompressed HDMI output of the D800, albeit not the silent aperture controls. The D600 also works with the WU-1b wireless adapter which allows remote control with compatible Android and iOS devices.

Nikon D600 review

Full-frame DSLRs have for the most part been the preserve of the professional or high-end enthusiast due to their high cost, but with the arrival of the D600, Nikon hope to open this up to a much wider audience. The D600 is Nikon's most affordable full-frame DSLR to date and will undoubtedly appeal to a broad range of photographers looking to upgrade, and not just Nikon users either. The question though is have sacrifices been made in an effort to produce a sub-2000 full-frame DSLR or is the Nikon D600 the perfect DSLR for the enthusiast photographer?Nikon D600 review - FeaturesIf you're thinking that the D600 is a stripped-down full-frame DSLR offering from Nikon, then think again. For a start, the D600 features a newly developed 24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor. With the exception of the 36.3MP D800, the resolution offered by the D600 matches or exceeds any other full-frame DSLR on the market today. As with other full-frame Nikon DSLRs, there's a 1.5x DX crop mode as well, so should you still want to use an existing DX lens that's in your camera bag, you'll come back with 10.5MP files to play with.

Nikon D600 review

Buying GuideBest DSLR: top cameras by price and brandNikon has been rather busy over the past year, having already released the D4 and D800 in quick succession. But the company isn't taking a break just yet. The Nikon D600 aims to fill the gap between the hugely capable and professional Nikon D800 and the enthusiast-level Nikon D7000. The D600 is Nikon's first 'accessible' full-frame DSLR. Its 1,955.99/$2,099.95 price tag comfortably undercuts the full price of the Nikon D800 or Canon EOS 5D Mark III, while the size and weight of the Nikon D600 are only a marginal increase over the cropped-sensor Nikon D7000.But has Nikon cut any corners to produce its smallest and least expensive full-frame offering? At the heart of the Nikon D600 is a new 24.3 million pixel, FX format CMOS sensor. It may seem quite a reduction from the 36.3MP chip in the Nikon D800, but it's still enough to outdo a Nikon D4 or Canon EOS 5D Mark III in terms of outright resolution.Of course a good sensor needs to be backed up by a fast processor, and fortunately the Nikon D600 shares the same Expeed 3 engine as the Nikon D4 and Nikon D800.

Hands on: Nikon D600 (Preview)

We've been expecting Nikon to announce a more affordable alternative to the groundbreaking Nikon D800 for quite a while now, but we weren't really expecting it to make it smaller than the Nikon D300s. However, as the Nikon D600 measures 141x113x82mm, that is exactly what Nikon's engineers and designers have managed to do - even though it has a full-frame sensor and the D300s an APS-C format device. This should make it much easier to transport - which is good news for photographers who want a camera for everyday use.The good news for image quality is that the newly designed sensor inside the D600 has 24.3 million effective pixels, roughly 12 million less than the D800 and this, coupled with the same Expeed 3 processing engine as inside the top-end Nikon D4, should mean that images are clean and detailed. Also, Nikon hasn't pushed the boundaries of low light performance with the D600, sticking to the safe ISO 100-6400 native range and allowing expansion settings from the equivalent of IS 50 to ISO 25,600.With 24.3 million effective pixels on its FX format sensor it's not really a surprise that the D600's maximum continuous shooting speed is 'just' 5.5fps.

Nikon D600 (Preview)

I'm not going to bury the lede: Nikon's prosumer-targeted full-frame dSLR, the D600, will have a suggested retail price of about $2,100, and I expect it to street for under $2,000. Given how few compromises Nikon seems to have made in the camera's design and feature set, that seems like a pretty nice price for enthusiast photographers who've been drooling over an unattainable D800 or 5D Mark III. Until now, the least expensive full-frame model you could find has probably been the 5D Mark II, widely available for about $2,000, but it's over three years old and its autofocus system was creaky even when the camera was introduced. The D600 rolls current technologies into a prosumer-friendly body (modeled after the D7000) for the same price. It's worth a small digression to address what might make a camera like the D600 worth more than twice as much as, say, the D7000. As I explained in my coverage of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1, a full-frame sensor is equivalent in size to a frame of 35mm film. Larger sensors are generally more desirable for two main reasons: they potentially allow for larger photosites (light receptors) per pixel for a given resolution, and provide more creative flexibility with respect to depth of field (DOF) at a given focal length.

Nikon D600 (Preview)

The worst-kept secret the photographic industry in recent memory (well, except for maybe the D800) is out. Nikon has officially announced the long-rumored and much-leaked D600 - a full-frame DSLR aimed at enthusiasts, with a price to match. At $2099/£1955 body only the 24MP D600 is significantly cheaper than its big brother the D800, and in fact every other current full-frame DSLR. As such, the D600 - which offers similar build quality and operational ergonomics as the popular DX-format D7000 - is hugely significant. It's full frame, but not only that, it matches or exceeds the pixel count of every other full-frame DSLR bar one (the D800) at the sort of price point that up to now, has been almost exclusively the preserve of high-end APS-C cameras. For those of us who've been covering the industry for a while, it's sobering to remember that the first full-frame DSLR, Canon's 1Ds, was announced almost a decade ago. It doesn't seem like so long ago that full-frame was the holy grail of consumer digital imaging, promising liberation from crop factors once and for all, and a return to a simpler time where a 24mm lens actually was a 24mm.
