Nikon D3s

Any photographer worth his prime lens would have heard of the Nikon D3s. A full size, full frame, professional-grade body, the D3s is Nikons offering to professionals who don't quite need a very high megapixel output, but demand speed and do a lot of shooting in low, or less-than-ideal light. Pro bodies such as this one are definitely not for the tentative enthusiast. They weigh well over a kilogram, the D3s tips the scales at 1240 grams. Add one of the better Nikkor lens, and the weight of the package will exceed two kilograms. That's a lot of camera to lug around, although photographers would hope the inconvenience is offset by the image quality, functions and usability. Looking at the D3s face on, one cannot help be impressed at the sheer size of the camera. Those wanting sleek cameras will find the Nikon D3s to be a sumo-grade heavyweight, while pros will appreciate the heavy, solid lines and reassuring heft, and the substantial grip that makes even the D300s seem like a cheap toy. In fact, the sturdy magnesium-alloy frame has been given one of the chunkiest rubber grips your money can buy. As a result, the Nikon D3s is very comfortable to hold. Ones fingers do not have to bend, and at no point does hand-space feel insufficient.

Nikon D3S

You know there was already something excellent about a camera when it gets only a minor upgrade after almost two years of service, something Nikon confirms with its introduction of the Nikon D3S professional digital SLR. You might disagree on whether the upgrade is major or minor, but some will cling to the resolution to say that there's little new about the Nikon D3S: "It's still 12.1 megapixels." But a camera is more than resolution. Nikon more than any other camera company has taught us that a digital camera can perform better in low light than we've ever allowed ourselves to expect -- seeing more like our eyes see, so that we can get better pictures without flash. They taught us this with the Nikon D3, whose expanded ISO setting was an astonishing 25,600. Journalists rely on the D3's high ISO settings, making images that would have been impossible just a few years ago. The Nikon D3S, however, is more sensitive. Its base ISO range is 200 to 12,800. And its expanded ISO settings go up to 102,400. The possibilities just multiplied. In addition to greater sensitivity, the Nikon D3S offers the new essential feature of video capture. As on other Nikons, D-Movie captures 1,280 x 720 progressive scan at 24 frames per second.

Nikon D3s

The Nikon D3s shoots at up to 11 frames per sec, at up to ISO 102,400, but is it the ultimate DSLR? Back in 2007 Nikon announced its first ever full-frame DSLR, the Nikon D3, and promptly changed the face of professional cameras. It offered high-quality results at high speed and offered a huge ISO range (up to 25,600 expanded) which was, at the time, way beyond the competition. The shots it was capable of caused many to prick their ears up and even convinced many well- established Canon pros to switch allegiances to Nikon. Since then a more consumer-friendly D700 version and a more studio-based D3x have followed. But it is only now with the D3s that we see the next real progression for this titan of a camera. The Nikon D3s is aimed predominantly at press and sports photographers. The 's' is a common addition to Nikon models to suggest an improved or upgraded version and has previously been seen on the likes of the D300, D70 and the D2 models. The main improvements are in the form of a greater ISO range which extends up to ISO 102,400, and an HD video function. However, closer inspection also reveals improvements to allow faster operation and shooting.
