Nikon D3200 Review

The Nikon D3200 is an entry-level digital SLR camera boasting a newly designed 24.2 megapixel DX format APS-C sensor and the same EXPEED 3 processor as the flagship D4 DSLR. The D3200 also boasts a 3 inch 921k-dot LCD monitor, one-touch full 1080p HD video recording with autofocus, quick-access Live View mode, ISO range of 100-12800, 11-point autofocus system, 4fps continuous shooting and the latest-generation interactive Guide Mode. The Nikon D3200 is available in black or red priced at £559.99 / €667.00 body only and £649.99 / €775.00 / $699.95 with the Nikkor 18-55mm VR lens. Like the 18-month old D3100, the new Nikon D3200 is a rather small DSLR camera, although it does come with a chunky right-hand grip that makes it better suited to hand-held shooting than some of its competitors. Still, expect having to find a place for your little finger under the camera if you have larger-than-average hands. The camera body itself is mainly plastic, but while the D3200 certainly doesn't feel as robust as some of the company's higher specified models, it still exudes a degree of quality you might not expect at this price point.

Nikon D3200

The Nikon D3200 ($699.95) may be replacing the entry-level D3100, but its user experience is more akin to what you'd get from a mid-range D5100. The most compelling update is the improved image sensor; clocking in at 24 megapixels, it makes the D3200 one of the highest-resolution cameras in this price range. Other additions include 1080/30p video, an improved LCD screen, faster continuous shooting, and WiFi module compatibility. The D3200 sits at the bottom of Nikon's DSLR lineup, kitted with an unremarkable 18-55mm VR lens. It's available now in black or red. From head-on, the D3200 looks just like last year’s D5100. In fact, the two could easily be confused if not for their large model number badges. Nikon has repositioned a few buttons, and added one for Live View, as well. As on the D5100, the movie button now resides on the top panel behind the shutter release, making it quicker and easier to start a recording. The rear LCD has also been upgraded to a 921,000-dot panel. This camera is also a bit smaller than the D5200 and the D5100 before it. Some space has been saved by sticking with a fixed-position LCD, and the internals aren’t as heavy, making this one of the most portable DSLRs on the market.

Nikon D3200

A clear sign of things to come, the low-end Nikon D3200 sports a 24.2-megapixel sensor capable of ISO 12,800 in expanded mode. The Nikon D3200 also includes compatibility with Nikon's new wireless mobile adapter, WU-1a, which allows easy image sharing and even camera remote control via an Android device and a free downloadable app (an iOS app is expected in late Fall 2012). Other major upgrades include a new 3-inch 921,000-dot LCD monitor, and the ability to capture Full HD video at up to 30 fps, with full-time AF while recording. The Nikon D3200 even includes a microphone input jack for stereo recording, and HDMI output with CEC support. EXPEED 3 processing allows the Nikon D3200 to record up to four frames per second at the full 24.2-megapixel resolution, and its 11-point autofocus system works hand-in-hand with the Nikon Scene Recognition system to set exposure and focus more accurately. Walkaround. Though similar in appearance to the D3100, the Nikon D3200's contours and elements are restyled somewhat, but it still looks quite similar, with a very compact, comfortable design. With the lens, a card, and the battery loaded, the Nikon D3200 weighs 27.3 ounces (1.71 pounds; 773g).

Nikon D3200 Review

Preview based on a production Nikon D3200 The D3200 represents the latest generation of Nikon's entry-level DSLR offering. The camera's headline feature is inevitably the new 24MP CMOS sensor which makes it equal to Sony's Alpha SLT-A65, A77 and NEX-7 in offering the highest pixel count we've yet seen at the APS-C sensor size, and in terms of output resolution, second only to the full-frame professional-grade D800 in Nikon's entire range. More significant than the bare fact of the D3200's pixel count though is that it is available in camera with a starting price of $699 (the same launch price as the D3100 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-C G3, for comparison). The D3200 may not exactly be revolutionary, but it doesn't have to be. It just has to be competitive. Pixel-count aside, the changes from the predecessor D3100 are subtle but, with 1080p30 video, a 920k dot LCD and the option to add an affordable Wi-Fi transmitter, there are clear benefits over the D3100's specification. As usual for Nikons at this level, the D3200 doesn't feature a built-in focus motor, and nor does it offer auto exposure bracketing.

Nikon D3200

After almost two years of being the entry-level photographer's friend, Nikon has replaced the D3100 with the updated D3200. Of all the updates the new camera brings with it, the most notable would definitely be the new 24 megapixel sensor. When the D3200 was announced, many assumed that the sensor at the heart of the camera was the same found in Sony's Alpha 77 (the first APS-C camera with a 24 megapixel camera), but it turns out, Nikon has placed its own sensor in the D3200. However, the sensor isn't the only aspect about the camera to receive an update. Several smaller, but important aspects of the camera have been greatly improved on to make the Nikon D3200 a camera that can stand on its own in the entry-level segment. For a reason that effectively continues to elude us, we can't fathom why entry-level cameras are so tiny! The Canon SX40 HS is as big (in fact, thicker by 2mm) as the Nikon D3200, and it's only a super zoom camera. We often hope that something about the look and feel would distinguish a DSLR from a point and shoot, but oh well.

Nikon D3200 review

By all accounts, Nikon had a great year in 2011, topping both the DSLR and compact camera charts. The former came via the Nikon D3100, the company's entry-level offering with a 14.2 million pixel sensor, which is a great way in for those looking to get serious about their photography. After launching two new models at the very top of its lineup already this year, Nikon has now refreshed its beginner offering with the D3200, although interestingly not by replacing the D3100, but by introducing the new camera to sit alongside it.Nikon says that it will continue to market and sell the D3100, giving customers the choice between a budget model, and a more sophisticated option in the D3200.Buying GuideBest Nikon cameras 2012There's lots of interesting technology crammed into the relatively small body of the Nikon D3200, including things that have trickled down from its more expensive bodies. These include features such as the Expeed 3 processing engine, which promises to deliver quicker processing, low noise and a range of frame rates for Full HD video recording.

Nikon D3200 Review

Nikon's D3200 shoots razor-sharp 24-megapixel stills for under $700, making it an attractive first buy for DSLR beginners. The Nikon D3200 is a giant leap for consumer-friendly DSLRs. It has an amazing 24.2-megapixel sensor at quite an affordable price. Let's see if Nikon lands on its feet after this jump — or falls flat on its megapixels. Not content with a small bump in resolution from the 14.2-megapixel D3100, Nikon leaped over archrival Canon's 18-megapixel EOS Rebels — including the soon-to-be-released T4i. We still can't get over the fact the D3200 has a 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS chip. The only other cameras with that size sensor are the mirrorless Sony NEX-7 ($1,199) and Translucent Mirror Technology Sony Alpha A65 and A77 ($849 and $1,349, respectively) DSLRs — and these prices are body-only configurations. On the surface, this looks like a screaming deal, but let's dig a little deeper. Oh, in case you're wondering, Nikon is using Sony chips, but its own processor and algorithms. At first glance, the D3100 and D3200 look very similar. There are some changes though — some subtle, others not.

Nikon D3200 review

The distinction between consumer and professional dSLR cameras is becoming increasingly blurred. For many, it now comes down to the size of the chip, the maximum shutter speed and the number of auto-focus points. It's perhaps for those reasons that Nikon includes the D3200 in its consumer line-up. In every other respect this is a serious, top-quality camera that easily outguns what would have been considered a high-end pro unit just a few years ago.The Nikon D3200 can be bought now from around £550 online. The biggest and most impressive stat -- and the one that's sure to catch the eye -- is the resolution. At 24.2 megapixels, it beats many pro cameras even today, including the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (22.3 megapixels), and most of its consumer rivals. The D3200 produces shots of 6,016x4,000 pixels. Where the pro cameras still have the edge though is in the physical sensor size, with the Canon EOS 5D sporting a full-frame chip that matches the size of a regular 35mm frame. In the D3200, it's an APS-C-sized chip -- Nikon's DX format -- which means that its photosites are packed slightly closer together.

Nikon D3200

The Nikon D3200 ($699.95 direct with 18-55mm lens) is the company's entry-level D-SLR, and as such offers a wealth of features that should appeal to photographers in search of their first interchangeable lens camera. The 24-megapixel shooter improves upon the 14-megapixel resolution of the D3100 ($699.95, 4 stars) and also provides full manual shooting controls for seasoned shutterbugs. It does well in low light, and offers continuous autofocus during video recording, but doesn't quite oust our current under-$1,000 Editors' Choice D-SLR, the Nikon D5100 ($899.99, 4.5 stars), with its broader feature set including a sharp, articulating rear LCD. Design and Features Even though it dwarfs point-and-shoot cameras, the D3200 is quite compact for an SLR. The body measures 3.8 by 5.0 by 3.1 inches and weighs an even pound (sans lens), slightly smaller than the 3.9-by-5.1-by-3.1, 1.1-pound Canon EOS Rebel T3 ($599.99, 3.5 stars). Even though the included 18-55mm (27-82.5mm equivalent) zoom lens is small compared with professional telephoto zoom lenses, it feels larger than it is when mounted on the small camera.

Nikon D3200 review

As the popularity of Compact System Cameras increases with a host of new models, it's been pretty quiet period for entry-level DSLRs over the last twelve months. This is about to change with the arrival of the Nikon D3200. Boasting a resolution that's a match for much higher priced models, while at the same time promising to make the transition from a point and shoot compact to a DSLR a breeze with a built-in Guide Mode, the Nikon D3200 looks set to tempt potential Compact System Camera purchasers back to a DSLR. Has it done enough? The most dramatic change from the 14.2MP D3100 (which will continue in the Nikon DSLR line-up for now) is the arrival of a 24.2MP CMOS sensor. Not only does this mean it has the second highest pixel count in the entire Nikon DSLR line-up behind the pro-spec 36.3MP full-frame D800 (eclipsing both the higher priced D5100 and D7000 as well), but offers one of the highest pixel counts ever seen on a APS-C DSLR. Nikon hope the boost in resolution over the D3100 will see entry-level users wanting to crop images and refine composition safe in the knowledge that there will be limited impact on image quality.

Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

The Nikon D3200 is due to take over from the successful D3100 after over barely a year on the market. It brings plenty of eagerly awaited new features, including a 921,000-dot display and, more surprisingly, a 24-Megapixel APS-C sensor previously only seen in higher-end SLRs. We didn't see that coming! On first contact, the D3200 is a convincing camera. Although the body is made entirely from plastic, quality is decent and the rubber finish on the grip handle and the back of the camera make the D3200 nice to handle. This impression of quality is, however, slightly tarnished as soon as you bring your eye up to the viewfinder, which is disappointingly small. Plus, there isn't really enough eye relief for users who wear glasses. Then again, both of those problems are typical to entry-level SLRs, although Sony has managed to equip the Alpha 37 with a larger electronic viewfinder with 100% coverage. A few minor changes have been made to the interface. For example, the handy little switch for Live View and video mode has been ditched in favour of a more (too!) conventional button. The 'magnifying glass' buttons have been switched around and a third button has been added to the top of the grip handle for video recording.

Nikon D3200 review (with 18-55mm VR lens, Black)

The Nikon D3200 has a lot of the same or similar components to the D3100, including the same autofocus system (bolstered by Nikon's newer scene-recognition technology) and viewfinder, it's got a newer, higher resolution sensor coupled with Nikon's updated Expeed 3 imaging engine, a higher-resolution LCD, and 1080/30p video with a supporting microphone jack and HDMI connector. But the D3200 may be a case of newer not necessarily being better; it's a solid camera, but one that doesn't particularly stand out from the crowd. Compared with its competitors, the D3200 matches their photo quality but doesn't surpass them; in fact, I think the D3100 has better photos overall, and by the numbers has a better noise profile at all levels up to ISO 12800 (which is immaterial since it's unusable on most cameras under at least $1,800). In general, JPEG photos look clean up through ISO 400 with increasing noise and loss of detail through ISO 3200, the highest I'd probably use and even then only scaled down.

Nikon D3200 review

The Nikon D3200 is the company’s latest entry-level DSLR. Announced in April 2012, it replaces the best-selling D3100 and like that model, makes a number of key improvements. The headline upgrade is pure resolution with the new D3200 boasting nothing less than 24 Megapixels, a whopping ten more than its predecessor - indeed it subsequently becomes the highest resolution DX-format body in the Nikon range, let alone the highest entry-level model. Alongside the higher resolution sensor the processor has been upgraded to the Expeed 3, and while the D3200 retains its predecessor's 3in fixed screen, the display resolution is increased to 921k pixels. The movie mode also gets a upgrade, but it's not what you might expect. The 1080p24 mode remains but is supplemented by 1080p25/30. You can now also control exposure during movie shooting and Nikon has added a socket for an external mic. Not only that, audio recording levels can be adjusted with the help of built-in stereo audio level meters, all of which makes the D3200 a much more attractive option for shooting movies than its predecessor.

It even regains the option to trigger the camera with an infrared remote - with the inclusion of sensors on the front and rear of the camera.

Nikon D3200 (Preview)

Everyone wants to take great pictures, but not everyone knows their way round a camera well enough to take great shots in tough conditions. Fortunately, the Nikon D3200 is a camera with all the power and sophistication of an SLR that also teaches you in the simplest terms how to achieve great results. The D3200 takes 24-megapixel photos and high definition movies, but don't be intimidated even if you're only a beginner. The D3200 is an entry-level D-SLR, slotting into Nikon's range between the D3100 and D5100. It doesn't replace the D3100, which will continue to be the junior model of the Nikon line-up. It's full of powerful features, but set up in such a way as to be easy for the novice to use and learn about. The D3200 and an 18-55mm lens cost around £650, or you can get just the body for £560. It's available in mid-May in black, with a glossy red version to follow at an unconfirmed date. Our first impression is how light the D3200 is. Weighing just 505g, even with the lens attached it's a nicely balanced and lightweight camera. It sports a 3-inch screen and comes in black or red. Inside is a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, a sizable APS-C sensor that Nikon calls its DX format.

The headline upgrade is pure resolution with the new D3200 boasting nothing less than 24 Megapixels, a whopping ten more than its predecessor - indeed it subsequently becomes the highest resolution DX-format body in the Nikon range. Dramatically higher resolution sensors are normally cause for concern, but I believe the sensor in the D3200 is the same as that already deployed by the Sony NEX-7 and SLT-A65 and A77 models, all of which deliver surprisingly good performance considering the pixel density. The proof of the pudding is always in the eating, but I reckon we can use the results from the NEX-7 to indicate the degree of performance we can expect from the D3200. (Note I say NEX-7 as oppose to the SLT models as it doesn’t have a fixed mirror in the optical path). The earlier D3100 was the first Nikon DSLR to bring 1080p video recording to the range, but did so at a fixed frame rate of 24fps, which the D3200 now expands to include 30fps; impressively there’s also an external microphone input too.
