froknowsphoto.com I did a few minutes of test video using the Nikon 35 1.8 and 70-200 VR2. As you can see in some of the videos there is a major jello effect when you are panning. When you are still and focused on a subject the quality seems to be really nice. The audio of course is lacking as its a built in mic with no inputs for using external mics. The Autofocus seemed to be pretty responsive, it is not lighting fast but being the first Nikon to offer such a feature I think it did a great job with it. If i were to use this camera for VIDEO it would be on a tripod where it would not be panning. Keep in mind this is a $600 body, I think the video quality will be very usable as long as you know how to use it. For a starter camera you get a lot of bang for your buck!!!

www.FroKnowsPhoto.com It is a huge day for Nikon Shooters and future DSLR camera owners. The announcement of the D3100 is a sign of things to come from Nikon. This will usher in a whole new crop (no pun intended) of sensors that should produce better quality photos and video. The D3100 will most likely be the first camera out of the gate with a D90 D300s and D700 replacements to follow. Let's look at the main features I am most interested in in the new D3100. The new CMOS sensor is a step forward over the CCD of the D3000. It should produce much better still images at all the different ISO settings. Keep in mind, higher ISO is in no way a replacement for using faster glass (F1.4,1.8 and 2.8 lenses) The new sensor also gives the D3100 the capability of recording full HD 1080 video at 24 frames a second. At lower quality settings you have the option to change the frame rate. The coolest most exciting addition for me is the ability to have continuous Autofocus during video recording. This means you will have an easier time when zooming and tracking a subject to hopefully get your focus right. A side note is that your internal microphone will pick up the sound of the focus motors when recording video. I feel that this will be a very very solid camera for capturing still images. The new sensor will certainly make this a better camera in higher ISO's. I do have a few concerns about this camera and they mostly fall on the video side of things. DP / editor: Sakari Mäkelä, student of movie cinematography Tips for color correcting footage ------------------------------------------- In video editing or color correction software's video effects, take the "luma curve" tool and turn the linear line more into a "S"-shaped curve, just pressing darks more low and lights more up. (like here: www.hdforindies.com One can then add also RGB curves and try to adjust these also individually to different color channels to get the desired result. Then I suggest to add "Fast color collector" (in Adobe Premiere Pro) and from there find "master" settings and "saturation" and then lower it like to 70% or something like that. (other softwares might have a separate "Saturation" effect) Usually in cinematic style, saturation is a bit lower than 100%. Then one can use the color corrector tool's color wheel (depending a bit from the software used) to change the overall tone of the picture. These quick tips should give some cinematic punch to picture :)

I took the opportunity to test out my ickle new digicam by reviewing this clever little bit of kit :). **Note - Assuming I've exported the thing right, Video resolution should be 1280x760** so you should be able to watch in HD. **IMPORTANT NOTE*** As far as I am aware, this lens works for ALL nikon F mount cameras, including the D3100, D90, D5000 D5100 etc etc. Some features (VR, AF) might not work on very old (pre D1) cameras.
