Nikon D3100

The Nikon D3100 represents the entry point for Nikon’s current DSLR lineup, featuring a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor, 2.8fps shooting, and beginner-friendly features such as Nikon’s “guide” mode. The D3100 is aimed squarely at those looking to just get into interchangeable lens cameras, but offers the kind of image quality and affordable price point that will likely give even more advanced users pause when considering their next camera. The Nikon D3100 did not match the Nikon D5100—our camera of the year for 2011—for color accuracy, but it came very close. The D3100 shows a color error of just 2.48 in our testing, which was the best in our comparison group of entry-level interchangeable lens cameras. The camera also put forward near-perfect saturation levels at 101% of the ideal, controlling common trouble areas like yellow and magenta effectively. More on how we test color. The most accurate color mode on the D3100 was the neutral setting, which kept saturation to normal levels. The portrait mode was a close second, with very accurate skin tones but a slightly more saturated (105% of the ideal) look that kept flesh tones looking more lively.

Nikon D3100

Just a step above its other entry-level DSLR camera (the D3000), Nikon's new D3100 has some fresh features that make it a very attractive DLSR option for photographers who are starting out. Notable features include 1080p high-definition video and continuous autofocus in Live View and movie modes. A smart and simple design aesthetic and a clear and helpful Guide Mode combine to make it an ideal camera for users new to DSLR who want to learn the basics. Nikon says that the $700 D3100 is not a direct replacement for the $550 D3000, which is still available. However, the two models have similar features and are aimed at the same audience. The bump in image quality and a slew of new and improved features make the D3100 a tempting choice over the D3000 for a small price difference. The D3100 has the usual features for its class with a few additional gems and smart design ideas thrown in. Here's a look at some of the camera's key features: The D3100 has a 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, which is an upgrade from the D3000's 10.2-megapixel CCD sensor. That's a higher megapixel count than the higher-end Nikon D5000 has, but the D5000's sensor is still physically larger.

Nikon D3100

Though in some specifications at its introduction it bested almost every camera in Nikon's digital SLR lineup, the Nikon D3100 slots into the company's product line directly above the entry-level D3000. The newly designed 14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor is coupled to the latest generation EXPEED 2 image processor; a combination that allows both higher resolution and 1080p movie capture at 24 fps. Standard ISO sensitivities range from 100 to 3,200 equivalents, with the ability to extend this range as high as ISO 12,800 if needed. The Nikon D3100 adds today's must-have Live View and Movie modes, both of which were conspicuously absent on the D3000. Marking another first for a Nikon digital SLR, the D3100 can capture progressive scan 1,920 x 1,080 pixel movies -- commonly known as 1080p or Full HD -- at a rate of 24 frames per second. Perhaps even more unusually, the Nikon D3100 provides full-time autofocusing capability both in Live View mode and during movie capture. The Nikon D3100 also offers basic in-camera movie editing capabilities. The D3100 is the first Nikon digital SLR to support the latest generation of Secure Digital cards, known as SDXC.

Digital Cameras: SLRs, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

A year after releasing the D3000, the last SLR to use the ageing 10-Megapixel CCD, Nikon has revamped its entry-level model with the updated D3100. Plus, thanks to its Full HD video mode, the D3100 outdoes the brand's professional models on some key criteria! Handling Compared with the D3000 and previous models (the Nikon entry-level range had barely changed since the D40), the D3100 is quite different. The marbled plastic has been replaced with rubber on the handle and there's a rubber thumb-rest at the rear too. It still feels a bit light and plastic compared with higher-end models, but the overall quality has improved noticeably. The real downfall is the screen, which although 3 inches in size only displays 230,000 dots, when most £250 compacts display more. In fact, the camera's direct competitor, the slightly more expensive Pentax K-r, has a screen with VGA resolution. Plus, the Sony NEX-3 compact camera with interchangeable lenses (no viewfinder) has a VGA swivel screen! It's all the more annoying because the previous model, with its outdated 10-Megapixel CCD, only used the screen to display menus and view back pictures, while the D3100 has a 14-Megapixel CMOS that can shoot in real time (and film in Full HD) using the screen as a viewfinder.

Nikon D3100 review

Nikon's D3100 is the company's latest entry-level DSLR. Announced in August 2010, it's the successor the best-selling D3000 and makes several key upgrades to that model. Most notably the new D3100 now features Live View and video recording facilities – indeed it becomes the first Nikon DSLR (hotly followed by the D7000) to offer 1080p video recording in addition to 720p. To satisfy market demands, the resolution has also received boost from 10 to 14 Megapixels and there's a number of tweaks to the controls and ergonomics. Like the D3000 before it, the D3100 features a Guide mode which asks simple questions about what you'd like to take before setting up the camera appropriately. It's a great option for beginners which also teaches you about camera settings, and the D3100 builds upon its predecessor by sensibly showing example images before finally asking if you'd like to shoot with the viewfinder or screen, or film movies instead. Live View and movies are the two major new features on the D3100, which were sorely missing on the earlier D3000. Rather than simply lifting the existing capabilities of models like the D90 and D5000 though, the D3100 offers a choice of HD resolutions and frame rates, and a more efficient encoding system which allows longer recording times.

Nikon D3100 Review

The Nikon D3100 takes solid 14.2-megapixel stills, but it's video quality is lacking despite its ability to continuously focus.Ho-hum-another new DSLR that shoots HD video. That was our reaction at the announcement of this new Nikon geared for first-timers to interchangeable lens ranks. And yet there’s something unique about this camera we’ll share with you in a click or two…No need to spend too much time dissecting the industrial design of this baby since it looks like every other DSLR on the market. It does have a nice textured grip and is blessedly clean of icons and decals. Let’s get to the good stuff. DigitalTrends.com readers know we’re not big fans of DSLR video. Until the Sony SLT-A55V came along we dismissed it because focusing was a real pain. Not to get too techie but DSLRs use contrast phase detection when capturing movies compared to a camcorder’s more accurate phase detection. The new Sony –A55 (and A33) cameras are breakthroughs because they use phase detection. The result? Those DSLRs take the best video of any camera we’ve tested (and it’s the AVCHD format, just like better high-def camcorders).

Nikon D3100

The 14.2-megapixel Nikon D3100 is a great entry-level digital SLR, and at $699.95 (list, with 18-55mm lens) it's the least-expensive D-SLR to capture 1080p video. It also includes a feature no other D-SLR has - continuous autofocus during video recording, which makes the D3100 feel like a camcorder while it's shooting. The camera can detect faces, lock on, and adjust the focus automatically to make video capture even easier. The only problem is that the lens isn't silent, so every time it refocuses you'll hear it. The Sony Alpha55 SLT-A55VL ($849.99, 4 stars) has faster autofocus, and the Sony NEX-3 ($549.99, 4.5 stars) and the Panasonic Lumix GH1 ($1,499.95, 3.5 stars) can focus silently, but if you want continuous autofocus in a true D-SLR, plus a true optical viewfinder, the Nikon D3100 is your only choice - but it's a good one. At 3.75 by 4.75 by 2.5 inches (HWD), and 1.09 pounds (1.69 pounds with its included 18-55mm lens), the body of the Nikon D3100 is small and light for a D-SLR, but it still dwarfs a pocket point-and-shoot or compact-interchangeable-lens camera like the Sony NEX-3. Controls are standard - all the usual suspects are there (Mode Dial, Scroll Wheel, Directional Pad), and little else.

Nikon D3100 SLR Captures 1080p Video

Nikon has just announced the D3100, their first digital SLR to capture 1080p video. The new $699.99 SLR is also the first to offer full-time auto focus, where the camera is constantly focusing while recording video and in live view mode. The new D3100 is built around a new 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processors that can capture Full HD video at a 1920 by 1080p resolution, albeit only at a speed of 24fps. The D3100 can shoot 30fps video, but only at a 720p resolution. The new sensor also allows the camera to do a neat trick of continually focusing while shooting and in live view mode. Most SLRs focus using a separate set of focus sensors near the viewfinder, but the D3100 can also focus using the same contrast detection system that point and shoot cameras use, which can be done from the sensor itself while it is capturing images. So, this SLR can refocus the lens while shooting, which most other SLRs cannot do. The video that the camera records is stored in AVCHD format, so it can be edited by most video editing applications.
