Time and again over the past few years has the Nikon D40 won our Editors’ Choice in the budget DSLR category. Now the D3000, which packs a larger 10.2-megapixel resolution, faster speeds, and much better autofocus takes its place as the best entry level DSLR. Although the category has since expanded to include reasonably priced DSLRs that shoot HD video, the D3000 rules the budget category because of its superior image quality. At 5.0 x 3.8 x 2.5 inches, the D3000 is about the size of the Canon Digital Rebel T1i, but at 1.8 pounds it’s about 0.7 ounces heavier. To photogs upgrading from a D40, it’s virtually the same size (the D40 measures 5.0 x 3.7 x 2.5 inches). That extra weight, however, translates to a solid, durable feel, while still being light enough to store in a bag or comfortably sling around your neck or shoulder. As a beginner-friendly camera, the D3000 forgoes some common dedicated buttons—such as ISO—and instead folds them into the menus. The buttons flanking the bright 230,000-dot, 3.0-inch LCD (the D40 has a 2.5-inch screen with the same LCD monitor resolution) include playback, menu, and delete buttons, a navigational pad, and twin buttons for zooming in and out of photos in playback mode.

Nikon D3000 10.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

Think of the Nikon D3000 as the smaller cousin of the long-standing models it replaces. With the D3000 ($550 as of December 17, 2009), Nikon improves on its previous entry-level model (the Nikon D40), refining the design and adding a slew of features that make the D3000 a great choice for point-and-shoot owners looking to explore the digital SLR world. The 10.2-megapixel D3000 adopts much of the design of its predecessor. The D3000 weighs only a smidgen more than the older model, at just over a pound. But that's still light enough that I could carry the D3000 for a week in my tote bag, and I easily forgot that a DSLR was in there. Though lightweight, the D3000 feels substantial in its build--the only letdown is its flimsy-feeling SD/SDHC card door. In all other respects the D3000 offers just what Nikon enthusiasts have come to expect, namely solid design and attention to detail. One of the first noticeable improvements is in the autofocus system, which Nikon has upped to an 11-point focus system (along with center-weighted and averaging modes). The autofocus sensor also handles 3D tracking, so it can track an object even if the shot's composition changes. Have an arsenal of legacy Nikon lenses?

Product Survey: Digital SLRs and Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses

After the D5000, the D3000 is Nikon's second four-figure SLR, and it's easing the D60 into a well-earned retirement. That 10 Megapixel CCD sensor doesn't get any rest, as it's also found in this new model. We're glad to see progress elsewhere though, with a new eleven-point autofocus system, a wider LCD screen and a renewed effort from Nikon to make this camera easier-to-use for first-timers with a new graphical interface. With its squat, stocky frame, the D3000 looks like its big brothers the D40x and D60, and is easy to get hold of, with a well-designed handle ensuring a good grip. Anybody with big paws will struggle a little with the small buttons, but, overall, the D3000 does pretty well: it's well built, with a decent optical viewfinder (although not quite as good as the one on the Pentax K-m), and most of the controls in a sensible place, like the ring around the shutter release to turn it on and off or the scroll wheel at the back. The viewfinder is too small for manual focusing, but given the diminutive size of the 18-50 mm lens, you wouldn't risk it anyway. There is some good news, too, as a rangefinder is available, and you can also display a grid to help arrange the composition of your photos.

Nikon D3000 (with 18mm-55mm lens)

While many shooters are making the leap from a point-and-shoot to a dSLR, manufacturers are still in the experimental stage when it comes to determining the appropriate design and operational characteristics that define a camera for that audience. Thus far, Nikon seems to have gone the furthest with its attempts; the D3000 targets newbies by implementing an entire show-me-how-it's-done shooting mode without sacrificing the traditional manual controls one expects on a dSLR. For whatever reason, be it an attempt to simplify or straightforward cost cutting, the D3000 also bears the most stripped-down feature set I've seen so far in this class, but at least it doesn't sacrifice performance and photo quality as well. For the most part, the D3000 looks, feels, and operates like a typical low-end dSLR. It's a little heavier than its classmates, but not significantly so, and feels well made and solid, with a nice grip. A programmable Fn button--you can set it to control the self-timer, release mode, image quality, ISO sensitivity, white balance, or Active D-Lighting menus, as well as to toggle a grid display in the viewfinder--lies under your left thumb, though it's a little hard to differentiate from the flash pop-up/compensation button that sits above it by feel alone.
