Slim compact digital cameras with a large zoom lens were first made popular by Panasonic's TZ range of cameras, including the recent Panasonic TZ20 and its 16x zoom lens. The Nikon Coolpix S9100's design is very similar, with the lens to one side of the body and a large LCD screen dominating the rear, all packaged in a body that's just 34.6mm deep. Nikon's Coolpix S9100 squeezes an 18x zoom lens and 1080p video recording into a relatively slim body, priced at around £220. The zoom covers a very useful range, equivalent to 25-450mm on a 35mm camera, which should make this camera ideal for travel due to its flexibility and compactness. The wide-angle lens will be useful for group shots of people, architecture and vistas, whereas the 450mm telephoto lens is best suited for isolating subjects and picking out distant details. The Coolpix S9100 sits at the top of Nikon's S-Series of cameras, which emphasises stylish design and ease of use, rather than manual controls and customisable functions. Taking photos in low light is possible thanks to Nikon's 12.1MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, which enables sensitvity settings as high as ISO 3200.
The Nikon COOLPIX S9100 is a 12.1 Megapixel compact super-zoom with an 18x optical zoom lens and a 3in 4:3 aspect ratio LCD screen. Released in February 2011, its back-illuminated CMOS sensor provides it with high-speed continuous shooting capabilities, a 1080p30 HD best quality video mode and slow motion movies. Other features that take advantage of the sensor's fast shooting ability are three new composite scene modes, two for night shooting and one that produces HDR images for backlit and other subjects with a wide tonal range. This is the first COOLPIX compact to use a Nikkor ED glass lens, and the 18x optical zoom has an impressive range, starting at 25mm and outreaching the competition with a 450mm telephoto. Like all Nikon compacts, the COOLPIX S9100 opts for sensor-shift (rather than optical lens-based) stabilisation, and couples it with Motion Detection which automatically increases the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed to avoid camera shake. Nikon has updated its basic Panorama Assist mode with the addition of a pan-and-shoot Easy panorama mode on a par with what's been available on selected Sony Cyber-shot compacts for a couple of years now.
In the digicam battle against the insurgent cellphones, image quality hasn't been enough to turn back the tide. And the modest 3x zoom so popular for so long hasn't been enough either. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is one of several pocketable digicams packing a long zoom in its small frame, the sort of zoom you used to see only on bulky dSLR-like superzooms. At 18x optical, it reaches to a barely handholdable 450mm from a pretty generous 25mm wide angle that can see more of the room than most digicams. Image quality hasn't been forgotten either, with a new 12.1-megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensor mated with Nikon's EXPEED C2 image processing engine. And just for fun, there are a few tricks up the Coolpix S9100's sleeve, too. It's enough to make the Coolpix S9100 an interesting travel companion, or, in our case, something to bring to the ballpark. Look and Feel. Compared to an ultracompact, the Coolpix S9100 is a thick 1.4 inches, but it still fits in a shirt pocket without rearranging your collar. That puts it in the same weight class as a lot of cameras these days, but it has one thing going for it I haven't seen recently: a grip. Gripping these slick little cameras is work, so much so that there are even after-market grips you can attach to some of them to make the job a little easier.
Nikon's latest entry in to the compact superzoom market is the COOLPIX S9100. The model features a large 18x optical zoom, which is supported by a host of stabilisation technologies, and covers a focal range of 25-450mm in equivalent terms. Nikon boasts that the S9100 features seven types of anti-blur technologies, which includes the aforementioned sensor-shift and electronic vibration reduction. It also covers motion detection, high-ISO settings and a series of dedicated shooting modes aimed at sharp images whatever the light conditions.Other standout elements of the specification are the 12.1MP back illuminated CMOS sensor and full HD video capture at 1080p resolution complete with on-board stereo sound capture. A striking 3in, 921-k dot LCD fills the rear of the camera and is well towards the top end of LCD screen specifications, while the on-board EXPEED C2 image processing system also aids image processing. A disappointing element of the COOLPIX S9100's specification is the lack of PASM shooting controls, as well as a lack of Raw capture. For a camera which, on the whole, is aimed at a more advanced shooter, you would really expect such elements to feature.Nikon sells the COOLPIX S9100 as having a ‘stunningly slim' body.
The Nikon Coolpix S9100 telescopes out to an astounding 18x optical zoom from a surprisingly compact body, but lacks the optical image stabilization to make full use of it.Travel time is here. Everyone’s looking for a good compact camera with a potent zoom, solid image quality and the ability to record full HD videos to capture all those great memories. On paper the Nikon Coolpix S9100 seems to be a solid contender, with an 18x optical zoom, 12-megapixel sensor, and relatively compact body. While so-so image stabilization makes the zoom less useful at its furthest levels without something to brace it against, solid image quality and a cornucopia of other features still make the S9100 worthy of consideration. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is one deceptive camera. This 1.4-inch-thick digm, icam has an 18x optical zoom, one of the most potent lenses you’ll find in a non-DSLR-type body. With a solid look and feel, the S9100 is still compact enough to fit in your pocket, so you can take it with you on your travels. Available in black, silver or red (our sample was black), it has an almost suede-like texture with a soft, reassuring feel. It’s good old plastic, but it’s nice anyway. The relatively hefty camera tips the scales at 7.6 ounces with battery and card, measuring 4.2 x 2.5 x 1.4 (W x H x D, in inches).
If you're looking for a compact camera that's huge on zoom, the 12.1-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S9100 ($329.95 direct) has you covered - it packs a whopping 18x optical zoom into a pocket-size body. It lacks some of its competitors' features, like a flashy UI, or GPS, but if you want to get closer to the action, the S9100 delivers where it counts. This camera is incredibly fast, packs a high-res LCD, and captures excellent photos and videos even in low light, so it's our latest Editors' Choice superzoom digital camera. The S9100 wants to be taken seriously, and opts for professional looks over gimmicky or colorful attributes. It comes in black, red, or silver - my test unit was black. It qualifies as pocket-sized, but just barely at 2.5 by 4.2 by 1.4 inches (HWD). The front right has a small grip - basically just a vertical bar - that looks like a design flourish but is meant to give you a better hold. Like many higher-end cameras, the S9100's flash must be manually popped up to be used. The back of the camera has a sweet little spinning ring on it so you can quickly breeze through menus. The button layout doesn't stray from what you'd see on most compact cameras - there's a direction pad underneath the scroll wheel, dedicated Playback and Movie Recording buttons, and a mode dial and zoom trigger. You'll be hard-pressed to find a camera the S9100's size that can offer more zoom.
The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a camera that seemingly achieves the impossible on several fronts. First on that list of surprises is its 18X zoom lens, which matches the optical reach of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 at the top end of the pocket-megazoom market. It also serves up stunning image quality for its reasonable $330 (as of April 13, 2011) price: In our subjective tests, the S9100's photos were on a par with those of much higher-priced cameras such as its sibling, the Nikon Coolpix P7000 ($450), and the Canon PowerShot G12 ($500). And despite that sophisticated firepower, it's also one of the easiest cameras to use right out of the box, thanks to its simple button layout, straightforward menus, and array of automated modes. But here's the most mind-boggling thing about the Coolpix S9100: Despite having no manual controls and no RAW shooting mode, it's the rare camera that's bound to please both novices and experienced shooters alike. It has a great blend of creative automated controls and overall versatility that will make you forget about manual controls very quickly--you probably won't even miss them. If you're looking for a long-zoom camera that can fit in your pocket, is very easy to use, rarely ever takes a bad photo, and never gets boring, the Coolpix S9100 is among the best options we've ever tested.
With an 18x wide-angle lens, a sleek 3-inch LCD and a 12-Megapixel sensor that holds its own at high ISO settings, the Nikon S9100 is an attractive compact camera. However, it's not the only seductive snapper in the highly competitive superzoom compact market. So does the Nikon S9100 have what it takes to stand out from the crowd? Considering that this camera has an 18x zoom lens, the S9100 is actually quite compact and would easily fit into a large jacket pocket or a small bag. The S9100 is a well-made and well-finished camera that feels sturdy to handle ... apart from the slightly fragile looking connection port covers. The controls are responsive, nicely sized and pleasant to use. The 3-inch LCD is also a nice touch. The on-screen image flows smoothly in good light, but does suffer from glitches and lag when the light starts to fade. Colour accuracy isn't too bad (DeltaE = 4.8), but the colours are a little on the cold side (colour temperature approximately 7000 K). It's just a shame that colour shading and nuances don't come through quite so well in bright light. On the whole, the Nikon S9100 is a nice camera to handle and the controls fall nicely under your fingers. The click-round wheel on the back also means you can scroll through options and menus quickly and easily.
Nikon took CP+ by storm this year, announcing eight new Coolpix cameras, including the compact S9100. Some things remain unchanged from last year's S8100; the aperture still maxes out at F3.5 and it has the same 12.1MP sensor and beautiful 3.0-inch, 921k LCD. However, this new Coolpix has a crazy 19x optical zoom packed into its 1.5-inch thick frame. So, if zoom is your thing, say hello to the S9100. The S9100 will feel familiar to most Nikon point-and-shoot users. The mode dial is packed with auto modes to make things a little more manageable. The most complex mode is really just program auto (which is the easy mode on most cameras). If you want to make things even easier for yourself, you can select a scene mode. And if want things to be even easier than that, you can tell the camera to select a scene mode for you. Many of the camera’s more advanced features remain unexplained within the camera’s menus and are not intuitively named. It’s also easy to miss things like the exposure, hue, and vividness controls, which are only accessible by pressing the OK button while shooting. Once you do become accustomed to the menus and controls, however, the slick scroll wheel will really come in handy, making it easy and fast to get around inside the S9100.
