Nikon Coolpix S70

In 2010, $300 should buy you a lot of camera, but Nikon's $299.95 (list) Coolpix S70 comes up short when you judge it against the fierce and plentiful competition in the point-and-shoot market. On paper, this 12.1-megapixel camera has the makings of a top-notch product - a slim, striking design, an edge-to-edge, 3.5-inch OLED screen with multi-touch support, a 5x zoom lens, and more. Unfortunately, the Coolpix S70 has its fair share of problems too: that big screen is low-resolution and suffers from multi-touch issues, and the camera's image quality isn't on a par with other $300 models. The 12.1-megapixel Nikon S70 earns high marks for its looks. The model I tested was black with a gunmetal accent line along the top and down the sides of the camera. (Nikon also offers the S70 in red, light brown, and beige.) Measuring 2.4 by 3.8 by 0.8 inches (HWD), the S70 is similar in size and appearance to the very slick Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 ($499.99, ). The front of the camera is partially covered in a leather-like, grippable material, and next to it is a slide-down cover that reveals the internal zoom lens. Flip the camera over to find a big, 3.5-inch glass-covered OLED screen that dominates its back.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras 2009

The specs certainly look great on paper, but that certainly doesn't offer a guarantee of the quality of the photos that this camera produces. So is Nikon's Coopix S70 worthy of your attention? The Nikon Coolpix S70 is well-designed, with soft artificial leather and a very stripped-back interface (the only physical button on show is the shutter release) contributing to a refined look. It still isn't as thin as the Sony TX1, its most obvious competitor. The back of the S70 is a single 3.5'' LCD touchscreen, which is why there are no physical controls. You switch it on by sliding open the lens cover. The screen is incredibly bright, with OLED technology creating very wide viewing angles. That said, a definition of 280 000 pixels is a still stingy and it leaves your photos looking pixellated. In 12 Megapixel mode, you can see your photo in most of the screen, but the area around the outside is used to house different settings. In Auto mode, the interface is composed of a trail of icons around the edge of the screen, which isn't the most attractive or user-friendly way of laying out the controls. Worse still, the icons are fairly rudimentary and the whole interface is far from elegant.

Nikon Coolpix S70

The Nikon Coolpix S70 is an impressive leap forward in design and functionality from its predecessor, the S60. That camera, while it had an excellent design, had a touch-screen LCD that was occasionally frustrating to use; that's not great considering operation was nearly all touch-based. The S70's OLED screen is not only bright and beautiful, but very responsive, allowing for a few cool new features along with improvements to older ones. It's a little slow for much more than portraits and landscapes and its photos are merely very good for a point-and-shoot--hard to swallow given its price. But if you love having a touch screen and don't mind paying for it, the S70 is a lot of fun. Available in four color combinations, the S70 is an attractive, slim camera that's easily slipped into a pants pocket or small bag. In front is a thin metal panel covering the internal wide-angle lens with a 5x zoom. Slide it down and the camera turns on. The only button is the shutter release and, well, it's not even necessary. Nikon decided to take its Touch AF option a step further by giving you the option to use it as a shutter release as well.
