Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

The Nikon Coolpix S6200 is an entry-level superzoom compact. With a budget price tag naturally comes a limited set of tech specs, and so the S6200 has a 10x zoom lens (25-250mm) but a 16-Megapixel CCD sensor. Plus, you can forget Full HD video, as the S6200 sticks with good old 720p. The Nikon S6200 is a reasonably good-looking compact. Then again, it may look nice, but build quality leaves a lot to be desired, as this camera feels more like a plastic cigarette lighter than a stylish superzoom compact. From the front, the single-coloured, bright, almost shimmering casing is certainly eye-catching, making this compact look particularly attractive ... it's just a shame that the back of the camera is quite so ugly and that it's not a bit slimmer. This smooth, shiny finish does nothing to help you grip onto the camera. The front face is particularly slippery and the textured thumb-rest doesn't help much. The S6200 has a fairly classic design with the usual four-way arrow keys (self-timer, flash, macro and exposure correction) and handy scroll wheel for adjusting settings. There's a separate video-record button too. The only real downside is the on/off button, which you have to hold down for at least a second for it to register your command.

Nikon Coolpix S6200

The Nikon Coolpix S6200 is a perfectly average point-and-shoot camera. It does nothing very well, but it's also not completely without worth. Mostly, its value is tied up in its lens and design. It's barely bigger than a deck of cards, yet has an ultrawide-angle lens with a 10x zoom range. The S6200 is also easy to use, has enough shooting features to please most snapshooters, and looks good, too. But, while its photo quality is good for its class (depending on your needs and expectations, of course), its shooting performance, in particular its ability to focus properly, drove me a little crazy. If you only need an occasional camera for snapshots and like the idea of having a flexible lens in a pocketable body for a reasonable price, the S6200 might be good enough. The S6200's 16-megapixel resolution means little in terms of quality. The photos are generally soft, noisy, and lack detail when viewed at full size. Those things only increase when you start using higher ISO sensitivities. Also, while colors are good at and below ISO 400, they start to appear slightly washed out and muddy from noise above that sensitivity. This, combined with the increased softness means the indoor and low-light photo quality just isn't very good.

The Nikon Coolpix S6200 sits near the top of the brand's Style range of digital cameras - between the Coolpix S6150 and the Coolpix S8100 - that aims to combine ease of use with compact, stylish designs.Headline features include the 10x zoom lens, which has been squeezed into a body just 25.4mm deep, weighing just 160g. Behind this lens lies a 16MP CCD sensor, which feeds image information into a Nikon Expeed C2 image processing chip. This chip promises responsive handling, low noise at high ISO sensitivities and smoother 720p video recording than previous versions.For low-light picture taking and action stopping high shutter speeds, the ISO can be raised as high as ISO 3200, although at this setting, there will be a loss of detail and colour saturation due to noise reduction.Being aimed at consumers who prefer ease of use to manual operation, this camera comes equipped with a vast array of automatic scene modes. If choosing the appropriate scene mode sounds like a burden, then an automatic scene mode selector will take care of the hard work for you. Additional modes for creating selective colour, high key and sepia effect photos are also included.

Nikon Coolpix S6200

More zoom is usually a good thing, and it's always one of the best ways to help a point-and-shoot stand out from the legions of indistinguishable copycats. The 10x-zooming Nikon Coolpix S6200, on review here, is one of the first double-digit-zooming cameras from a big-name brand to debut at under $200. Predictably, it handles and shoots like a a budget pocket-cam that just happens to have a massive zoom ratio. That's fine for some folks, so read on to see if its long reach can offset its design and image quality shortcomings. The S6200 is available at an MSRP of $199 (expect street prices to be a bit lower, especially during the holiday season) in red, silver, black, blue, and pink shades. The Nikon S6200 shows acceptable color accuracy and saturation. We measured a minimum color error of 3.1 and 107.7% saturation, both of which are a little bit weaker than what we like to see from point-and-shoots, but average overall. Most colors are somewhat exaggerated, but the overall profile is vibrant and eye-pleasing. More on how we test color. Of our comparison group, the Canon ELPH 100 HS (which we consider to be the very best point-and-shoot for under $200) earns the best color accuracy score by a wide margin.

Nikon Coolpix S6200 review

Nikon calls its Coolpix S6200 an 'ultra-compact superzoom'. It's crossing into two distinct markets, there, but we reckon the specs justify the description. The S6200 is considerably smaller than its larger brother, the S8200, yet retains the 16-megapixel sensor, and, although the optical zoom doesn't match the S8200's monster 14x, it does stretch to a respectable 10x. It's available now for around £170. Sensitivity starts out lower than it does on the S8200, kicking off at ISO 80 and running through to ISO 3,200, with options to prevent it from straying beyond either ISO 400 or ISO 800 if you want to avoid noisy results. Exposure compensation extends to +/-2.0EV in 1/3 EV steps. This is controlled by a neat wheel on the back of the case that sits where many lower-end cameras sport a four-way rocker. Scrolling it races through the menus, and in this case lets you run up and down the compensation scale with the results displayed in real-time on the LCD preview. The menus are well considered and clearly organised. There are 19 scene modes to choose from, including the sweep panorama tool we've seen on each of Nikon's latest crop of digital snappers.
