Nikon Coolpix S4000

The 12-megapixel, Nikon Coolpix S4000 ($179.95 direct) is among the least-expensive cameras on the market to offer a touch screen interface. The touch experience on this camera isn't particularly glitzy, but it's perfectly functional and is complemented by a few, smartly selected physical buttons. Also, the 3-inch display is much sharper than most other under-$200 point-and-shoot cameras. The S4000 also performs somewhat better in low light than other shooters in this price range, but in all lighting conditions, this camera produces softer images than much of the competition. Another problem: there's no optical or mechanical stabilization - most budget cameras offer some kind of image stabilizer on the lens or image sensor to avoid blurry images. With the Nikon S4000, you need to decide whether a touch screen interface is worth sacrificing image stabilization for - and we don't think it is. The Nikon Coolpix S4000's body is extremely thin, light and only a hair larger than a Cisco Flip MinoHD 8GB 2 Hours (2010). It measures 2.3 by 3.8 by .8 inches (HWD), and weighs 4.48 ounces - very thin even for a compact camera. The unit I reviewed had a black back and a silver face and sides with a tone that looked nearly identical to the color of the body of an Apple MacBook Pro.

Nikon Coolpix S4000

The Coolpix S4000 (MSRP $179.95) is one of a few entry-level digital cameras offered by Nikon. Ease of use is the name of the game here, with very few bells and whistles to get in your way. Fortunately, the photo quality is pretty good too... The Nikon S4000 had a mediocre color performance compared to other simple point-and-shoot cameras. Though the Nikon is definitely on the low end of the price range here, color accuracy scores were below what typically see on this test. Of course, color performance is sometimes in the eye of the beholder; some consumers prefer extra saturation in their photos, even if it means less accurate colors. Click here for more on how we test color. You can see some 100% crops from our testing chart below. Skin tones, green, purple, and magenta all look pretty good, but the blues look particularly skewed. The Nikon S4000 has no additional color modes or color controls. The camera does offer vivid, monochrome, sepia, and cyanotype as in-camera editing options. You'll have to take the photos first, then do your color edits afterwards, but it saves you from having to do the same thing in Photoshop.

Nikon Coolpix S4000

Normally when there's a performance complaint about a touch-screen camera, it's about the responsiveness of the display. That's not true for the Nikon Coolpix S4000. Its touch controls respond well to both fingertips and the included stylus. Nikon makes the screen useful, too, not just relegating it to functions that would be better suited for physical buttons. The performance problems are related to the autofocus system, which is inconsistent at best, and general shooting speeds. Its photo quality, especially indoors or in dim lighting, is mediocre as well. It's capable of taking a good snapshot under the right circumstances with results suitable for small prints and Web sharing. In fact, if you're looking for an inexpensive touch-screen camera for well-lit portraits of still subjects, the S4000 is a viable option. That seems like an awfully small user group, though, and with so many other options at and below its price, you have to really want the touch screen to make this model worthwhile. The S4000 is nicely dressed for its price. The ultracompact metal body gives it a higher-quality feel and it's available in five colors--silver, black, red, pink, and plum.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras

The Coolpix S4000 is an ultra-compact, brightly coloured Nikon camera with a wide-angle lens, a touch-screen and a price tag that's really quite reasonable. However, the lack of any kind of decent stabilisation system is a real drawback, even for an entry-level model. Heads or tails? Flip this camera round it you could be mistaken it's a different model. Whereas the front side looks stylish, well-designed and attractive, the reverse is a tad more off-putting. The front is made from a pretty decent-quality plastic casing, and has been thoughtful designed and manufactured with the shutter-release button and the lens surrounded by a sleek chrome-effect detail. On the back, however, the screen is surrounded by a low-quality black plastic frame, which almost looks like it's been stuck on afterwards, not to mention an ugly panel at the side with two chrome-effect buttons and a thumb-rest. The camera screen also has a bit of a split personality. At first glance, it's a pleasant screen with 460,000 pixels that's well integrated into the camera's super-slim body. However, you'll have trouble using it unless you're absolutely face-on to the screen, as the TN panel's viewing angles are ridiculously tight (vertically, at least). The touch-screen interface is based on a system of virtual buttons that you use to navigate through menus.

Nikon Coolpix S4000 First Impressions Review

Thanks in no small part to Ashton Kutcher's winning smile in TV ads, Nikon has developed a successful line of touch-screen Coolpix cameras. The latest addition is the S4000, a 12-megapixel model with 4x zoom scheduled to ship in March. We got our fingers on a pre-release model at the PMA show in Anaheim, and have initial reactions to share. The S4000 is a very compact 3.8 x 2.3 x 0.8 inches, making it a tempting pocket companion. If the champagne silver color shown here isn't to your liking, black, pink, red and plum are also on the menu. The S4000 design is handsome in a conservative way. While nearly all the controls rely on the 3-inch, 461,000-dot touch-screen, there are two functional buttons back here: the top one brings up the record mode controls, the bottom one takes you to playback mode. And that button-like vertical strip near the top? Just decoration. A few buttons linger despite the mostly touch-screen interface. No panels, doors, buttons or other functional features on the sides of the camera beyond the lanyard attachment loop on the right side. The top of the camera is home to the power switch, zoom control and shutter.
