Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Nikon usually does pretty well with its entry-level cameras, as the S220 and S3000 were best-sellers in 2009 and 2010. Will their successor, the Coolpix S3100, prove just as popular? In any case, not much has changed in this year's model, with a slightly more powerful zoom, a few more Megapixels, a stylish design and, as ever, an attractive price. The S3100 looks and feels very, very similar to the S3000. In fact, the only visible difference is that the S3100 now has a separate video record button. The 2011 model has therefore inherited the S3000's sleek metal front face, available in a range of eye-catching colours, as well as its plastic back casing that feels like some kind of children's toy. The whole camera body is very smooth and you may find it a little tricky to use with just one hand. The S3100 has the same screen as the S3000, with a low definition of 230,000 dots, approximative colour fidelity and excessive contrast. It also has ridiculously tight viewing angles, which means it's very hard to see what you're doing when facing the camera screen at an angle. As we said above, the only improvement in design is the arrival of a separate video record button. This does, nevertheless, make the camera a fair bit easier to use, as you don't need to search around in the menus to switch between video and photo modes.

Nikon Coolpix S3100 review

Announced in February, the Coolpix S3100 is the compact camera that Nikon expects to be selling in the highest numbers over the coming months. It's aimed at users who want a shirt-pocket-sized camera that makes life simple; so simple, that while there are 18 scene modes to choose from, the S3100 has an Auto Scene Selector mode, so even this can be left to the camera. Exposure control is limited to compensation (to +/-2 EV in 1/3EV steps) and in Auto mode the sensitivity may be set in the range ISO 80-3200. Predictably, with 14 million effective pixels on a small sensor, the loss of detail at the highest setting means ISO 3200 is best avoided. With an equivalent focal length of 26-130mm, the S31000's lens has a versatile 5x zoom range, suited for general photography on days out, at social events and so on. In decent light the lens focuses quickly and the Subject Tracking system does a good job of following moving subjects. But with a closest focus of 10cm, this isn't the camera for snapping small details. Although it has just 230,000 dots, the 2.7-inch LCD provides a clear view of the scene. But it has a narrow viewing angle, so if you like shooting from ground-level you'll have to get your knees dirty.

Nikon Coolpix S3100 Review

For those more concerned with the aesthetic of a camera as much as the interior tech the Nikon Coolpix S3100 is an enticing prospect. With a smooth, slim body and variety of colours those with an eye for design will undoubtedly be impressed, even if the tech underneath isn't anything groundbreaking.The Nikon Coolpix S3100 sports a 14MP sensor, which is becoming more standard in the current climate of high resolution compact cameras. There's also a 5x optical zoom with a 26mm wide angle lens and both ISO and electronic image stabilization. The rear LCD is 2.7inch, which is a touch disappointing for a camera that has plenty of space to fill, and a Smart Portrait System which uses a variety of scene modes and post processing functions to take a more appealing end product. The upgraded EXPEED C2 processing engine should improve the likes of low light performance and movie mode, which is presented in the 720p HD resolution at 30fps.One of the main selling points of the Nikon Coolix S3100 is the smooth, thin exterior making it more attractive to the eye and pleasing to the pocket, being able to easily slide into a small pouch quite easily.
