With the tagline "Built to shoot and share" Nikon's newest projector-sporting Coolpix houses some neat features including connectivity with external devices such as an iPod or iPhone. It has a brighter projector and improved styling too, and yet there are still foibles. The Nikon Coolpix S1200pj is much-changed beast compared to its forbear the S1100pj, both in terms of looks and some key kit. First up the S1200's projector is much improved over the device found in its predecessor with a brighter DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector. That new projector uses a three-light, single plate colour sequential system (the S1100's was a single light) that boosts light output from the14-lumens of the S1100 up to 20-lumens on the new S1200. It is major step up and means you can project (even in a reasonably bright room) images up to 60-inches, and like the S1100 (and the S1000 before that) it's great fun to use, drawing admiring crowds whenever I fired it up to display my shots. The one caveat here it is does suck juice from the battery every quickly indeed.Another new feature of note is the iPhone and iPod connectivity via an accessory cable that is sadly, not included in the box; there's also a remote control (that is included) to help use the projector and other features once you got it set up and projecting.
Nikon released the world's first digital camera with a built-in projector in September 2009. The Coolpix S1000pj offered an easy, retro-tuned way to share photos and video clips with your nearest and dearest, although the tech came at a cost. Its original £399 price tag and uninspiring performance dulled its potential appeal.Nikon has shown faith in this niche market though, and 2011 sees the launch of the Nikon Coolpix S1200pj, Nikon's third compact camera to feature an incorporated projector. The £399 price remains the same, but the tech has developed a little. The headline improvements that this new Nikon compact brings to the Coolpix projector range are a brighter, higher contrast projected image and compatibility with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Using an additional dock connector cable, you can project pictures and movies stored on your Apple device or stream content from YouTube onto your living room wall - all in 640 x 480 VGA-o-vision. On paper, a comparison between the Nikon Coolpix S1200pj and last year's Coolpix S1100pj projector camera upgrade throws up plenty of like-for-like specifications. As with its predecessor, the S1200pj offers a 14.1MP 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, a 5-25mm 5x optical zoom lens (giving a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-140mm) and 30fps 720p HD video shooting.
Whether we'll live to see the paperless office -- or the paperless home -- is up for debate, but if everyone followed Nikon's lead we'd be one step closer. The 'pj' at the end of this camera's name points to its built-in projector, which lets you display your pictures without ever having to print them out. The projector is the S1200pj's most obvious selling point (and presumably the reason for the hefty £350 price tag), and we were excited to give it a try. Yet we also wanted to see how it performed as a regular point-and-shoot camera, so rounded off our close examination with some equally close-up photography. All digital cameras have a screen on the back for reviewing your shots, but the S1200pj goes one step further, supplementing this with a projector on the front so you can share your snaps with family and friends without all crowding around a small screen. On the top, where you might expect to find a mode dial, there's a diopter control for focusing the image. This moves the lens inside the body (as with the shooting lens, it doesn't protrude) to sharpen things up, and produces some great looking results. But with the bulb rated at a mere 20 lumens (for comparison, a 25W lightbulb has 200 lumens), you'll want to darken the room if you're not projecting to a surface close at hand.
