Nikon CoolPix S1000pj

Depending on how much you like viewing your photos or letting others view your photos, the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is either really cool or a waste. The compact camera houses an ultrasmall projector able to display photos and video at sizes up to 40 inches diagonal at the press of the button. However, the rest of the camera is completely basic: 12-megapixels, 28mm-equivalent wide-angle lens, 5x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD, and nearly fully automatic shooting options. Nikon's less expensive S640 and the even cheaper S570 have comparable photo quality and shooting performance (the S640 is actually faster). So if you're just after a good compact camera, the S1000pj is a waste. But, if you love to share your photos instantly and want to do it on something other than a computer screen, TV, or a tiny camera display, the S1000pj is really cool. The camera's design is simple and stylish and other than a little window on the front, there's nothing about it that immediately says, "Hey, I have a built-in projector." What's most interesting about the S1000pj is that the addition of the projector adds little to the weight or size of the camera; it's really not much bigger than a compact camera with similar features sans projector.

Nikon S1000pj Digital Camera Review

In our color accuracy test, we photograph a color chart and analyze how closely the camera captures this wide range of colors. We found that the Nikon did a very decent job here: most of the colors are very close to the originals. The only issues we saw are that some of the reds are a little muted, and the camera seems to be processing the skin colors to look a little more saturated, presumably to try and give you a healthy glow. Click here for more on how we test color. We found that the standard color mode was the most accurate. The Vivid color mode was also fairly accurate, but it boosted the saturation of the colors significantly. The S1000pj offers 5 different color modes: standard, vivid, black & white, sepia and cyanotype. These modes do what you would expect, with the Cyanotype producing a blue and white that mimics one of the earliest types of photography, without the noxious chemicals. We found that the S1000pj did well in our noise tests. However, s are definitely not noise-free, and the low noise comes at the cost of a significant amount of loss of detail in the as the camera processes the to remove the noise. At a time when all – or almost all – compacts have a 5x zoom, a 12 Mpx sensor, a 6.9 cm (2.7") or 7.6 cm (3") display screen, and similar size and cost, it's getting hard to set yourself apart from the pack. Nikon is taking a long shot – a digital camera with a built-in video projector. It's an original solution that makes the Coolpix S1000pj unique among the hundred or so cameras released in 2009. The Nikon S1000pj is instantly recognizable, with its Picasso-style nose in the middle of its face and second eye above. We'll let you decide how elegant-looking you think it is, but just about everyone on the team here found it extremely ugly. The metal body looks sturdy, but the build quality isn't perfect. The fit of the battery compartment lid, for example, isn't great – on our test model, it tended to stay closed even when unlatched. At the rear are a 6.9 cm (2.7") 230,000 dpi LCD screen, with a highly visible weave and pronounced clouding in shadows. Even worse, since it's a TN-technology display, the display becomes dark – and thus useless – when taking a downward-angled shot. For the rest, the S1000pj is laid out like other Coolpix models. Operation is simple and the interface is clear, if not elegant. The new controls related to the inclusion of the projector (see inset) are located on the upper part of the body.

Nikon's latest, the Coolpix S1000pj, is a camera which combines the compact formula with - wait for it - a projector capable of displaying an image as large as 40in. It's very much an innovation, but does it descend both the compact and projector worlds convincingly into one device? The What Digital Camera S1000pj review checks out how it all works... The S1000pj is the world's first compact camera to provide a built in projector and, with the longest side measuring under 10cms (99.5 x 62.5 x 23 mm), that's a pretty impressive feat. No need to carry your laptop around - simply project onto a nearby flat surface to show off your pics. The projector has around an alleged hour of continuous playback from one charge, is up to 10 lumens bright and can project VGA (640 x 480px) images as large as 40in with a throw distance up to 2m. Whilst it's not going to nudge your HD projector from its top spot, it's many times smaller and has certainly has attracted a great deal of interest since its announcement. Think of impromptu presentations to friends, colleagues or the like - a very innovative idea.
