Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

After the rather disappointing Coolpix S80, Nikon is back with the totally reworked Coolpix S100. Like its predecessor, this new snapper has a slim and stylish design, not to mention a multipoint touchscreen, but the updated model comes with a 28 mm wide-angle lens (finally!) and a 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor that could bring big improvements to photo and video image quality. We've got pretty much the same complaints about the S100 as we had about the S80. The camera has a nice overall look and is well-made. However, the battery and memory card compartment door has been downgraded in quality, and is now made from rather flimsy feeling black plastic that doesn't seem to be all that firmly fixed to its hinge. Plus, the S100 has the same rubber connection port covers as the S80, which are just as fiddly to open with short nails. On the whole though, the S100 is a decent-quality camera that's pleasant to hold. The LCD has some good features. For starters, it has a pretty incredible contrast ratio and its viewing angles are almost perfect, as is usually the way with OLED screens. Plus, screen resolution is sharp and detailed.

Nikon Coolpix S100 review

Imagine the sleek monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey shrunk down to fit in your pocket. Squeeze in a boggling choice of features and options, and you'll understand why we were so excited to get our hands on Nikon's £250 Coolpix S100 compact camera. Based on appearance alone, the S100 is far and away the most desirable camera we've reviewed in a very long time. The front consists of a slab of matte black metal, while the reverse is consumed entirely by a bright, vivid OLED display. Nikon has taken a leaf out of Apple's book with the screen, not only allowing you to swipe your photos back and forth as you view them, but also to zoom in and out by spreading your fingers and pinching. Apart from the physical shutter button, which sits in its traditional spot on top of the body, all of the controls are clustered about the edges of the touchscreen, and accessed by tapping hotspots that pull up on-screen menus. Even the zoom is a virtual rocker displayed on the screen, and exposure compensation is a slider that you drag to the left and right along a black-to-white stepped scale, which is great for beginners who might otherwise be confused by talk of EV. This touch control is implemented very effectively, with carefully thought-out menus and large on-screen buttons that are easily jabbed by even the fattest finger.
